Why a beverage can is cylinder and not a cuboid or a sphere.

The original full-length video of this is my favorite KZbin video ever, so it's fun to see it in this abridged form, but I'm still going to point everyone I can to the full length one.

It’s fun to make these shorts, but to me how to organize the information in a 12 minute video interests me greatly.

Shorts stink
@engineerguyvideo8 ай бұрын
@MikehMike01 they do have a different purpose than the longer videos; it is not my preferred format - in fact, I think they are more appropriate for other venues that focus on short form only. That said, I have enjoyed the challenge of how to do something (I hope) coherent in 45 seconds. Still, as I note, my heart is in the 8 to 12 minute YT video - it is 6:35a here and I am working on a script for a long format video right now ….

While I enjoy the longer format videos, I think Bill has also done a great job with these Shorts: concise and still fact-filled.

@@engineerguyvideo I agree with both sides. I have a dislike for shorts as they're instant time-sinks,, but in this case they introduced me to a channel that I'm fairly certain I'm going to love. For unknown reasons, youtube has never pitched the long form videos from this channel to me before, and this is right up my alley.

As somone who manufactures oil drums I can tell you there is alot that gose into them. The tops alone have 4 stages of process. Cutting the basic shape with a press, rounding the edges, putting sealing compound around the edges and welding the handles. The bottom takes 3 prossess. Minus the handle weld. Then both go to "the line" that creates the cylinder body (another welding prossess) that then marrys the bottom and then the top. Alot of scrap tinplate is made during these prossess. And if you're making EU drums for chemicals then the drums need to be tested to destruction. Definitely an engenders nightmare...

Also while the round can is the toughest, it also has the worst space optimization, and while the square one is perfect the cilindrical one is a good compromise.

You could put a circular lip on the bottom of the sphere so it won’t roll
@424685 ай бұрын
The cylindrical shape also allows the body of the can to be drawn and the seam at the top to be rolled and folded over. Lots of thought goes into the tiniest design choices if millions of that product are made-take a look at your zipper, for example :) I realize now that I learned these from your video. :) double smiles

A can doesn't roll away like a spherical one would... but let me tell you if your bag splits on the bus and one rolls away then gets a tiny puncture just as the bus reaches a hill... They do roll away. It is messy. People don't find at as funny as I did either. All round 9/10 for the can
