You can't get any better than this. Bill doesn't waste one second with ads, outros, fluff, etc. This is a perfect example of how KZbin content out matches television content.
@thebeststooge

Precisely but KZbin is screwing the pooch lately and is trying to force content creators off so major tv will be their funding source.

@Tadesan

Taran Van Hemert I don't think it's harder to make money with good content it's just not necessary for the content to be good to make money.
@talal309
@talal309 6 жыл бұрын
Tadesan well the thing is that money comes from ether one of two ways 1. Adds which really sucks plus advertisers would want more videos for more exposure which eventually would effect the quality of the content 2. KZbin partnership which also leads to the same thing (more video lower quality). Good example (the slow mo guys) I've been a fan of their videos since almost the beginning, lately KZbin took over and it became stupidly annoying

The reason the bird drinks whiskey faster than water is because whiskey tastes happy and temporarily removes the depression, but the water tastes bland and room temperature is arguably the worst temperature of water, especially for drinking

We had this toy at my aunt's house and it fascinated me. Nobody in the house was ever able to explain it to me why it works like that. Bill's whole style is so concise but still elegant. I never find myself left with unanswered or incompletely answered questions, but he does it all while staying affable and never condescending, and he brings in just enough fun trivia and colorful demonstrations to make the material feel appealing. The amount of care is palpable, and the information is paced perfectly. I feel really lucky getting to watch channels like this.

I am a Ph.D. engineer and scientist. This is so cool. It made my day, thank you! I have never had a drinking bird, but now I will get one. That, and a lava lamp. I would like to see Bill do a video about lava lamps. They are similar in that they are heat engines relying on a temperature differential and changes in buoyancy resulting from temperature dependent changes in density. Though I know how they work, I would love to see Bill explain them because his presentations are so captivating!

Welcome back! I first saw one of these toys when I was very young. I was mesmerized, and my dad tried telling me that the bird was solar powered, with the batteries kept in the hat of the bird. I was a bit too young to come up with a solid hypothesis on how it worked, but I knew my pops was wrong. I tried telling him that the liquid in the bird was key. I have thought of this toy over the years, but surprisingly never bought one, since I have never even seen one in real life again. I never thought of looking them up on the internet for some reason...

Great video! In summary, evaporation occurs in the head of the bird when it wets its beak. Therefore, the head of the bird becomes colder due to evaporation. Water always flows from high to low pressure. In this case, the tail has the higher pressure since the water begins to slowly work its way up the tube. Temperature and pressure are directly related. If the temperature drops, the pressure will too. As stated before, the water will flow towards where the pressure is lower, causing the weight of the bird's head to increase, dip back into the water, and repeat.

I cannot explain how wonderful this video is. "Don't touch the birds, " with an angry dynamic New York City accent". My father sold these birds at many different flea markets in the USA. He did not only sell the birds, he entertained thousands of people while doing it. Well entertain is somewhat not a word that describes his presentation correctly. He did not explain the physics of the drinking bird toy, nor did he do a dog and pony show, or a stand up comedy routine. The best way to describe his Drinking Bird Show is simply that it was his unique behavior, his very short-fuse temper, and his unusual mental state. My father was basically a very intelligent guy however, he was extremely crazy. He had a personality that was extreme and to say he lacked patience would be an understatement. He could not deal with things that other people found easy to accept. He had no tolerance for maters that displeased him and when a child or an adult became fascinated with the drinking birds that he had on display in a more or less uniform military arrangement he would blow up screaming, his rant, yelling as if it were opera "don't touch the birds". His startling reaction was received by people in odd ways, some were offended, some were amused, and some were shocked. He just could not accept the fact that he could not sell thousands of those birds every day and of course he just could deal with the financial losses he had as countless drinking birds would fall from their perch and become very damaged drinking birds when they failed to fly or otherwise escape their fate, crashing to the floor. He was quite an attraction and people would come to the flea market expecting to see his "performance". He wasn't appreciated by everyone due to his offensive mannerisms which resulted him being kicked out of probably every flea market in the USA for this and other crazy behavior. From as far away as the other end of the swap meet his rage could be heard loud and clear, "DON'T TOUCH THE BIRDS". I am going on eBay to buy one right now.

Great content. I was expecting a joke at the alcohol part - but Bill is a straight shooter through and through. The part that really surprised me is when it tipped backwards - these guys engineered it so that the weight of the water absorbed in the fabric is just enough to tip forward -brilliant!

I’m a bit late chiming in here and extremely glad to see this video. I remember when they came out in the mid ‘40s and fascinated me to no end. The bird that I remember was different than what’s in the video, but you would not have been able to demonstrate on that one. There was not plastic, no clear tube, no stamped parts. It seems that I remember more of what it wasn’t than was. Your bird is perfect for demonstrating. Thanks again.

I was given one of these toys as a child. As I grew older and entered college, I was determined to figure it out without asking anyone. I experimented with different liquids and that was the key. In my third year of college, I figured out it was a heat engine. I am now 78 years old and I just bought another one. It’s sitting here on my desk operating right now. I’m pretty proud of myself. 6:00 I understand that before refrigeration, people had a large box draped with felt to moisen hanging out of their apartment building window. As long as it was wet and the Sun was shining, the temperature inside the box remained I think about 40 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the ambient air temperature.
