Throughness to me. Hunter/Jumper trainer Wendy Ritter Peralta used to say to me....do not let him get behind your leg, he's getting behind your leg... ok throughness. When the horses motion is in front of your leg. If the motion is in front of your leg He is on his haunches. He can then stretch through his back and neck into your hand. If the horse is "through" it means you can extend and collect at the drop of a half halt and the flex of the calve... Like a slinky/spring. When the "connection" comes is when the horse is through and listening and all your thoughts begin to manifest through his body with just a flex of a muscle, squeeze of the hand, a shift of weight or direction of eyes. Watching your videos make me ache to teach again.

WOW! Just figure out that I could leave a comment. HAVE BEEN VERY INTRIGUED with all of your videos. A retired trainer myself, your videos are refreshing and not to mention very generous in sharing you seemingly endless knowlege. I just finished writing you and Jess a 10 page letter and searching for a mailing address to mail it to you. Your videos are helping me personally coping with the pandemic. I have also shared you guys with best friends, we all agree that you are purely magic. Great job on all levels of what you do. Thank you. I am in Arizona, however you can checkout Christopher Burns in palm springs California. Cant miss me, longish blonde hair profile pic with my imported friesian stallion. I look forward to hear from you.

This is very helpful. My horse is better than me, and seriously, he got mad at me today. I think my aides aren't clear enough. I wish I could find a good instructor. We'll figure it out!

Joseph that's a peanut not a jelly bean! Can't wait to try this. Cognizant not to burn Henry out on leg yielding but this is a good exercise to spice it up in the training. THANKS!!!

Great job on making the video.. I know its not easy getting good shots whilst training your horse(s). So friendly of you not to drone :D Bring on the whiteboard! Lovely excersize.. you made a big statement with that title.. don`t think there is a shape of througness, but a feeling of throughness. Maybe we should avoid all the leg to rein talk and just feel shifting shapes and weight. Clean boots are for fashionista`s..

Just a question from an uninformed lover of horses. Does dressage require bits and shoes? I love your gentle training.

Not a leg yield,, but a shallow serp with a straight section in the middle. Right?

It looks like a peanut. I've been using figure 8's, but now I'm going to try your peanut, thanks. 👍 Worrying about kids getting bucked off is like worrying about clean boots - Waay overrated, LOL. Merry Christmas, Joseph.

I was actually doing something similar to this the other day but instead of two leg yields I do 3 so in, out, in and then a half 10 meter circle to change the rein back to the same long side of the arena if that makes sense
@TheTeapotte6 жыл бұрын
Bear in mind I ride a 14.2 pony so this might not be possible on a larger horse depending on the size of your arena 😁

The result was great, he felt like a bouncy ball, super through. Though he might have been a tad behind the vertical because it was super cold and he was feeling quite wooohooo that day so I had to take up a little more rein than usual 😂

Hi Joseph, just wanted to know, in the straightening part do we move back our leg before applying it or should it be applied at the girth?

hmmmm....so you use only leg aid and rein aid ??????? in Germany i often hear this "doctrine" from inside leg to outside rein, but this is an issue not like a cooking formula ..... what would happen if students only work on this ? they would focus on reins and legs only and will forget using weight aid for turning but increase the bad habbit "stop and go riding at same moment" !! Later horses become "normal" horses not developing their gaits anymore . The natural language/ communication to horses , the pyhsics of riding, is the weight aid !! - That "throughness" is a result , a feeling, including or married with connection, of a straight trained / ridden horse who is able to bend its hind legs - and so one can imagine it doesnt come overnight but needs a long time of training with weight aid . .....hmmm....in Germany we call that , what you´re showing above "einfache Schlangenlinie" ( but a bit more using the corners for it ) maybe in english translated "simple serpentine" ....ha ha, smile, i dont know the engl. word .....but truly ridden this serpentine above its not that simple/easy it has many (!) useful things to talk/ think about !! Serpentines are not only ridden for looking pretty for the judges or competition - its a really good gymnastic to get your horse straight - but only if considering like being a train staying in the track ! So as you see, i dont want to offend anybody , but i was stuck in that issue for a long time , i dont like the words "from inside leg to outside rein" cause it gives students maybe an easy belief "wow so thats it sounds easy a little inside leg and outside rein and it will work " but nothing works !! That was my former younger experience with former teachers i worried about cause it always sounds like a cooking formular but nothing changed or feels easier in the horse by doing this. If one neglects the weight aid nothing will work . As a good instructor one has even to be careful which words one uses cause of the conditioning in the mind of the student rider .......so my fundamental experience in my riding life is that "without weight aids you will never get straightness a horse straight", that experience/ clearness i got by a student after asking me a question, ha ha !!! i can die for this sentence !! ...my old instructor said one day you learn by your students .....so then back again think about the useful serpentines , what you can learn by them is the right timing of leg aid but still balancing with your weight all the time !!!!! imagine this serpentine above is a triangle and you ride the 2 sides of it like a train being in the track ! ....so this is the beginning of riding correctly serpentine , there is more detail in it but i will shut up now ....find the timing - the gift - in it .....so, why do you bring that big issue ? ha ha ... today i only want to wish you a nice Merry Christmas....Sabine from Berlin ....a last sentence cause you say at 2:09 to 2:11 something .......i say "if truly straight it feels through" ......

You made me smile this morning. Ok. I’ll remember the weight aid too. I’m going to ride this on Geronimo. Can’t wait.
@Pferdecoach6 жыл бұрын
@JoElyn Newcomb.....ok then you understand 50% of my german english , smile....i dont know if the "einfache Schlangenlinie " is called "simple serpentine" - it has only one curve at the long side ? ...ok, so then this exercise is more difficult one thinks in first moment if helpful for straightness ....i learned from my RIP trainer Hans Kuhse in details - for example riding right direction in rising trot ( rechte Hand im Leichtraben ) but you must know that in rising trot the right leg aid for impulsion is then right direction if you are nearly sitting with your outside leg or if you rising up the inside leg : 1. think you will ride only two straight lines of a triangle not a bent serpentine ...2. riding or using the corner correctly cause one needs space and time to design the "simple serpentine" ...3. turn after the corner with weight aid like thinking upper body tiny behind inside horses shoulder ( my teacher said restricting seat ) so horse will follow to stay in balance with you and leaves the first track ( 1. Hufschlag ),almost same moment bend the horse in new direction fist and then sit on trot moment ( einmal sitzen bleiben um den Fuss zu wechseln ) , my teacher said horses wont let you sit if you wont first bend in neck ( without leg, no pressing them ) and then change your turning seat and rising trot and then give impulsion with your new now outside right leg almost in the moment you will come to sit from rising trot - but try to bring both shoulders in front of you to the inside on that first straight line of your triangle 4. at the highest point of that "triangle" you can do half halt and try one moment bending the neck more to inside - here left - but 5. now start to bring your weight tiny behind the inside left shoulder to restrict/ to end the "triangle" or simple serpentine cause you want to reach the corner again .... but now - this is important (!) 6. try to finish the second straight line of that triangle with impulsion by your left inside leg in that rising trot nearly you are uprising out of the saddle .... the right timing to get the right hind leg before hind leg leaves the ground ! 7. before you reach the corner first bend the horse into the new right direction then change seat and then be atttentive that horse doesnt shorten that coming corner ( cause its work for horses to bend ) so anticipate it with weight aid maybe that moment weight aid behind outside left horse shoulder that the horse has to go into that second finishing corner cause of your weight ( horses go where riders weight is , thats physics ) and not cause guiding with reins , too much reins will disturb the whole exercise - horse should bend one day in its hind legs in self carriage , bending is such as quick as the moment of timing for impulsion - the right moment is to get horses hind legs starting from the ground ! So in short form : you change reins then seat in the beginning of the "triangle" and ending of the triangle, in that "triangle" with two straight lines you create impulsion fist line with new outside leg then finishing second line with impulsion by inside leg while uprising ---anybody understanding ?? ha ha ha .....cause first line it will happen horse is drifting/ expanding over outside shoulder ( not staying in that track of triangle/ curve/ serpentine ) and/ or finishing the triangle in second line horse will mostly ending up in traver and this is not in the track and straight !....ha ha ha...to get a horse straight its written " get your horse straight and ride forward " ...even in that triangle the leg aid is for get impulsion, getting forward, quicker in hind leg but not in 5 minutes to Canada , smile , and not for pushing them sideways to get any direction for a serpentine ......smile ....if one doesnt feel the train ( = the horse ) is out of the track of a serpentine he or she wouldnt feel that horse is not straight in half pass or other exercises or bending in hind legs ...yeah !
@Pferdecoach6 жыл бұрын
riding triangle/ simple serpentine = introducing restricting seat goes fluently into expanding seat , then to finish triangle restricting seat and expanding seat to get the second corner correctly ....thats nearly all in totally short form of the shortest ....smile

so just now I get clear about why I dont like or never use that sentence "left leg on to right rein" - that diagonal doctrine or issue !!!! In my opinion the one using this has no true understanding of the old classical sentence "Richte dein Pferd gerade und reite es vorwärts" - "Straighten ( turn) your horse and ride him forward " ....the main duty of riders legs is to make horses hind legs quick not to give the direction where to go .......yes, thats it ! Or do horses choose and are able to vary between our leg aids ????? ...Horses thought: "ok now riders impulsion coming by leg means to me going forward or no, holy shit, does he now want me to go sideways and why is the inside rein stopping me , forward or not ??? ha ha ha ha ha....leg aid is leg aid ........but if here is anybody to convince me of that diagonal issue please do with your comment and the best would be a horse convinces me telling me yes - we have IQ of 180 - and can differ between several leg aids .....ha ha ha....this diagonal aid issue cant be explained in 2 minutes or it will be only known casually ...... Joseph, thank you, your channel is so inspiring to review things
