I have the deepest respect for Guillermo del Toro for being a creator with a unique vision. During an interview for Pan’s Labyrinth, he was asked what attracted him to this kind of film. He said he only makes the kind of movies he wants to see. It was a simple answer, but it blew me the hell away.

You know for once I have to agree with girtz on this one. In my opinion, the sub plots were fine to me. Great acting by the other actors. But however girtz is right about the fishman not being a character and not having a true relationship with the mute. It's the one thing that bothered me throughout the movie and I actually felt like she was taking advantage of a creature in a bad situation just so she can live out some sexual fish fantasy. Lol just my opinion.

I agree. I always wanted to see this film, and I finally did today. It was good in certain ways, but it left me feeling really meh. I didn't realize what was bothering me so much because I had to work right after I viewed it and didn't have time to contemplate, but when I watched this show later in the day, Girtz hit the nail on the head. It just wasn't believable in terms of why she would fall in love with the creature. It was like she fell head over heels in love upon first sight, which if anything, kind of makes her look like she's into beastiality or something. I get the various points of the movie and how it was meant to be sweet and romantic, but it just seemed off to me.

This is a negative version of The Creature from the Black Lagoon. This original takes place in the creatures world, this film takes place in our world. The original creature chased the woman and in this film the woman chases the creature. In the original the creature is the monster, in this film the humans are the monsters. It was good but you have to live in some white woman’s fantasy to make this a nomination for the movie of the year.

I agree with Korey that Shannen's character does not give a shit about his family he only did it to fulfill a role to his employers which is sad. He probably just wants to just up & leave them but in the 60s divorce was frowned on even not having a family is frowned on which is bullshit. I remember a guy saying when he was interviewing for a job on the police force his interviewer gave him a disappointed look be cause the guy wasn't married. He asked why that was & his answer was in jobs like cops, fireman having a family meant showing leadership & stability they wouldn't dare say this out loud to the interviewee because that interviewee will sue them for discrimination. You don't need to have a family for that type of shit why do you think people aren't getting married anymore because it's pointless & guys end up getting screwed in the end. I will use this example to explain my thinking process. Could someone brought up Jewish marry someone brought up Hindu? Yes I assume. But would that decision really make sense or be worthwhile if the individuals claim to believe strongly in the doctrine and ideas of their religion. Wouldn’t the raising of a child be potentially problematic? Many religious communities find marrying someone of a different religion to be too risky. But none of all this matters if a couple do not care for what the religion (or community) they was brought up in teaches about marriage and who they can marry. Usually this is the case when one is non religious and maybe an atheist/agnostic.

Saw this movie loved it after watching some KZbin interpretations about how Eliza got her scars summarized that she was an underwater creature herself but something happened & her gills were closed & she became more human looking. And she was found & placed in an orphanage so I wondered if the creature might've suspected that because Elisa is more mysterious than the creature himself. What type of underwater creature was she, what happened to her family, why & how were her scar like gills closed, why was she taken from her underwater & placed in an orphanage?
