I wouldn’t have thought when I read it when it first came out in January that it would all these months later remain one of the strongest and best books of the year, but here we are. This, Heaven & Earth Grocery Store and Tom Lake are all excellent works by writers at the top of their form and creating master works of their careers. Interesting that it’s the storytelling in these three books that is the the outstanding feature, and really good old fashioned storytelling, not the creative cutting edge striving of most authors this day to do something slick and complicated in structure or format with their works.

Very astute insights into this book. A lot of 80's writers being numb to life was a theme Jay McInerny in Bright Lights, Big City as well. It was also reflected in songs, The Goo-Goo Dolls (which isn't quite the era) but have the line "you bleed just to know you're alive." Also, Ellis' obsessions with numbness and serial killers was also present in The Doors with The End, The Crystal Ship, and Riders on the Storm (among others) didn't mean to go off on a musical bent, but maybe L.A. itself is creating those themes, which you I think you may have suggested. I think a lot of guys would risk having sex with someone they thought was really hot even if they thought they may be a serial killer. Just some thoughts off the top of my head. Excellent review.

Ellis captured the ambience of the dingy clubs in the 80’s,down to the sticky floors.I have been praising this book and feel it has fallen on deaf ears. Thank you for spotlighting this magnificent work! Have you read “Babysitter” by Joyce Carol Oates? I thought it was also an excellent, undervalued piece of work in a similar vein.

I love your analysis and insight to this book. I personally really enjoyed it to a point where I don't think I allowed myself to criticise it as much as I should have. But then, perhaps that suspension of the critic says something about how much I enjoyed the book - that I didn't want to criticise it. Thanks so much for what you do. I love following booky people, but it's rare that I find one that is so aligned with my tastes.

What a review! And I couldn't agree more with the message at the end about being self indulgent. What kind of a boring f*** would you otherwise be?

I just finished this book and first thought that made me laugh was the way the narrator described in detail the freeways he took to get around and the SNL skit called The Californians that spoofed that culture.

So someone who says a writer is self-indulgent is a communist?😅 (Have never read Ellis, am just bemused by Americans' obsession with communists and their love for using the term as an insult)

Not just that, but apparently you're either writing self-indulgent literature, or you're "common". This channel has seen better days, imo.
