Sydney were on their knees, resigned to saving the game. In the wet, it was very unlikely they would have won if the goal stood. With West Coast to come for Adelaide and Sydney playing Melbourne, GWS playing Carlton and Dogs playing Geelong, good chance Adelaide scrape into 8th. Absolute disgrace. They review goals, WHY not points? Makes no sense. That goal umpire is a four eyed disgrace, but the whole system is f*cked.

The counter-argument is that if those get reviewed throughout the season, and are correct 999 times out of a thousand, the team taking the kick-in can be disadvantaged for no reason because they have to wait to take the kick out and any open player won't be open any more. The timing on this error is unfortunate for sure, but so often fixing one thing because of a one-off leads to other more regular problems which could easily result in other teams missing finals off the back of them.

Given the goal umpires can’t make a decision without it being confirmed by the central umpire why should the field umpire not be held accountable too.
@felixscarlett1542
@felixscarlett1542 Жыл бұрын
Because the field umpire is not responsible for the score. The field umpire does not need to confirm the goal umpires decision as such and can be overruled by the goal umpire.
@geoffdickson
@geoffdickson Жыл бұрын
Goal umpires CAN make a decision without it being confirmed by the central umpire. Back in the day, central umpires would use 'soft signals' to indicate their preference. When calling out all clear, two hands to the mouth would mean 'I think it's a goal', one hand would mean 'I think it's a point''...and hands behind the back would mean 'I don't know, I cant help you' [which in modern AFL, would mean 'how about we have a look at the video'.
@AwesomeEth9
@AwesomeEth9 Жыл бұрын
The field umpires giving an 'all clear' is just about confirming to the goal umpire that there are no free kicks and they can wave the score. Goal umpire is completely responsible for determining if/when the ball crosses the goal/behind line or hits the post.

The AFL rules committee should give teams a right to challenge the goal umpire's decision, for video review, like in tennis and cricket. In this case, Adelaide would of had a right to challenge the wrong call by the goal umpire. Because field and goal umpires make mistakes. This mistake is going to cost Adelaide a chance to make the finals. If teams can challenge goal umpiring decisions, this can correct crucial mistakes in all games. Also need a better video review system.

Player review systems, and review systems more generally, tend to work better in stop-start games with definitive breaks in play. And even in cricket, among the sports with most obvious regular discrete breaks (after each delivery), there are multiple problems. Australian Football doesn't have that break on a no-score or behind.
@theflyingdropbear2009

@@TheGreatLordDufus there is still a slight pause after a scoring opportunity after the ball crosses the line, there should still be limits, such as no review between the arcs, but only done within the arcs itself, and if there is an apparent mistake, and each team only gets two reviews per quarter, and even if they get it right, that review is used up.

Have all of us forgotten that it was only a few years ago that Josh Jenkins hit the post in a showdown match that was awarded a goal by the goal umpire, and Adelaide ended up winning by less than a goal because of that incorrect decision? Adelaide supporters were happy to take the win on that occasion. This is a case of what goes around comes around. Umpires are human, they will make mistakes sometimes, but what we are always told growing up as kids is that the umpire's decision is final and that it's not going to be changed once it's been made. Sometimes you get lucky with these incorrect calls, other times you don't, but usually it evens itself out in the long run. To anyone kicking up a fuss about the Crows being robbed, just remember the Josh Jenkins decision that went their way in the showdown a few years ago. Also remember that there are many moments in 120 minutes of football that cost a team victory, not just one incorrect umpiring decision.

I don't even like the touched rule. If the ball crosses the line it should be a goal. I think the ball should have to come off a boot, preferably from a kicking action, and maybe even a defender's boot should count too. That would be fun. I wouldn't want a review for whether the ball touches the boot. It should be up to the goal umpire to decide. If he is confident the ball was kicked, he should award a goal, otherwise it should be a behind. There is to much reliance on technology. It slows the game down and demeans lower tier competitions that can't afford technology.

I follow the Bloods and can’t believe that wasn’t a goal. It was a great kick. So many great goals are denied by the AFL’s obsession with “was it touched by a fingernail” etc when the slight touch did not effect the trajectory of the ball at all. Soccer is way ahead of the AFL on this as if it hits the post or another player on the way through it’s still a goal. Takes all the contention out of it …

Can't take away the ball hitting the post as a point mate, that's one of the iconic things about footy, so is the touched behind, think of all the great players like SOS and Archer who rushed back to touch the ball on the line just before it passed through for a goal, it's part of what makes the game what it is
@thechemistamvs5033
@thechemistamvs5033 Жыл бұрын
If you allow touched balls to be goals then you have to draw some lines. You'd have to decide if it's only the balls that haven't changed trajectory by being touched and then you'd have to list exactly what that entails and then what? Interpretation. Should a glancing spoil that went through be counted? What about a direct spoil that punched it through? You can see how it gets murky

As Cornes said, they review every goal - as occurred when Kelly's last quarter goal in the GWS v Essendon match was overturned yesterday. They even told the field umpire in that case not to recommence play until it had been determined that the ball had grazed the post (with GWS more than 100pts ahead). As is typical of the AFL, the stupidity of their rules allows play to be recommenced from a kick-in after a behind has been adjudicated by the goal umpire - unless a review is requested. Once play has recommenced any scoring issue becomes irrelevant. There is no doubt the Sydney players knew it was a goal and took the kick-in as quickly as possible before the Adelaide players had a chance to object to the call - in which case the field umpire may have called for a review.

Every close call on goals or inside 50 free kicks should be reviewed with VAR, just like they do in soccer. I think most fans would be willing to wear the trade-off of slowing down the game occasionally. ( * What is the VAR in football? A video assistant referee (VAR) is a match official, with independent access to match footage, who may assist the referee only in the event of a 'clear and obvious error' or 'serious missed incident' in relation to: a. Goal/no goal. b. Penalty/no penalty.)

Why can't the AFL follow the SANFL umpires who were hats with cameras ? The umpire ducked at the same time that the players jumped and quite possibly blocked his vision for the critical second. I don’t agree with the goal umpire being sanctioned for the mistake, he should be counselled about asking the umpires for a review. You can see Blakey’s hand hits the padding just as the ball passes the post. The goal umpire has mistaken the noise of the hand on the pad and the movement of the post as being the ball hitting it. Pretty innocent. But there should be a process for teams to ask for a review in these circumstances. We see it all the time with players claiming to have touched the ball when they clearly haven’t. Reviews of those are based on player protests.

The AFL fine clubs and players for discretions, therefore the clubs need to be able to seek compensation from the AFL. They have after all made football more of a corporate enterprise. The club has acknowledged that they lost the game by bad kicking and lack of contested play in the first half ( a fact of several games this season) but the issue needs more than an apology.
