I wanna see more drilling, that part was really, really exciting. I wish there were more of it. My good that was good drilling.

Very nice vid. Even the ‘boring stuff’ can be interesting. Thanks

Great episode. Its so satisfying making spool clamps - I found it almost therapeutic.

Thanks Paul, I didn't mind it at all. Nice to do something where you are not concentrating 110% all the time.

Hi ...you could use a thick curtain pole and cut into sections - if you have one, or don't mind buying one! Don't even know if they need to be round, square pieces should work in most situations.

I think you could use pretty much anything, I did have a lenght of 40mm rod I was going to use but couldn't find it. In the end it was a good use of some scrap timber. I hate wasting good wood :)

Good stuff. To glue the centre, rather than use the F clamps, could you fit the outer scroll clamps then place the whole arrangement vertically in your bench vice (with a caul either side so the ends of the scroll clamps are cleared)? Not explained very well, hope you see what I mean.

I get what you are saying and it's a great idea, sadly my bench vice is quite small so it wouldn't fit :(

Making spool clamps is a big pain in the butt. But is has to be done. Buying them is silly. I used closet rod for mine but I think the 2” diameter is better. I’m also wondering if it would work with just cork backed large washers. They would twist more but maybe it would still work.

Yes, it did take quite a while to make them but they are done now, I had some 2" rod that I had salvaged from a garden umberella that would have been perfect but I couldn't find it! It'll turn up in the next few days, probably in one of the places I looked for it twice :)

Great series man! Its very inspiring and I learn a lot of watching you buidling guitars, I always dreamed of making an ES 335 or ES 330 myself. Thank you!

Thanks Marc, you should go for it, it's not an easy build but very satisfying.

You could use cork+rubber for durability. I was able to buy it as gasket material on Amazon.

Thanks for that Michael, I'll check that out as I'm sure the cork will need replacing at some point.

Really enjoying following along. It's my dream to make a 335 type guitar, I have the wood for the body so I just gotta start!

Thanks John, I would encourage anyone to have a go. It's not an easy build but with time and care it can be done, well that's my experience so far!!

I made some of those a couple of years ago but used good quality 16mm plywood. no chance of them splitting along the grain.
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams3 жыл бұрын
That's a good shout, I'm hoping the hardwood I used and the large washer will stop them splitting. We'll soon see :)
@smudgetherealmc3 жыл бұрын
Is the direction of the grain important when making the clamps?
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams3 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, not with the hardwood I've used anyway. There is a limited amount of pressure you can apply with an M6 wing nut.

Hope they were made from authentic" tone" wood otherwise it'll never sound right. (I new you'd drill out the washers so they look correct) a friend of mine made some with studding and used an old wind surfing suit instead of cork they worked fine 👍🇬🇧
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams3 жыл бұрын
Mahogany, maple and swamp ash, it should sound fine :) I did also think about using the foam from an old camping roll mat, might be a bit more durable.

Don't buy roofing bolts, buy hex head instead.
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams Жыл бұрын
To be honest the bolts I got have worked well. I haven't needed to put too much pressure on with these clamps.
