Here's a little tune from an old Merle Travis record called the "Merle Travis Guitar" released in 1955. I was fortunate to find a copy of the record in Montreal in the early 1980s.

I had an old friend request that I show him a few chords. Several months he was playing like this. Amazing, thanks so much for the memories.

I notice that there's a track carrying part of the guitar work. That's perfectly fine but my favorite fingerstyle playing is when the player can actually carry all of the parts at once, and not prerecord and mix in a backup track or use a echoing type machine to lay down background to play over. Yes, that's a skill in itself, but not what I look for in good finger style playing. My favorite is when a guitar player can walk in with his guitary and play it all. Beautiful Gretch.. Those are my favorite guitars for getting the best finger style tones in my opinion. I loved Chet on gretch guitars and I've played a few myself and loved them. I feel that Chet at least in part threw away his best tone when he moved from Gretch to Gibson. I feel his Gibsons NEVER sounded as good as the Gretches.
