In Matthew 22, a lawyer asks Jesus what the greatest commandment is. Jesus responds with the Shema from the Old Testament. See what is swirling about in this question that is often overlooked in what is really being asked of Jesus... and what the Shema is.

Thank you Dr PItre, Another viewpoint is that the questioner may have been attempting to establish who Jesus followed such as Rabbi Hillel the Elder or Shammai. Several encounters in the NT like this involve ‘a certain pharisee’ asking Jesus a question about a topic which just happens to be one of the topics on which Shammai and Hillel DISAGREED eg divorce. In other words, these guys from the audience around Jesus were attempting to ascertain whether Jesus was ‘according to the school of Hillel’ or ‘according to the school of Shammai’.

It seems to me that by citing the Shema as the greatest commandment, Jesus was affirming not only the Jewish scripture, but also its tradition. I think this is important in a time of Sola Scriptura when people want to claim that the Catholic tradition has no validity.

Not according to ancient Jewish rabbis, Philo of Alexandria and Dr. Michael Brown who was a former Jew and now believes in Yeshua of Nazareth as the Messiah :) The skeptic Bart Ehrman admits that there is more than one being existing alongside God in his book: How Jesus became God. My suggestion: try reading Dr. Michael Brown's book: Answering Jewish Objections about Jesus. He reexamined their Hebrew Scriptures and Christianity (except cults like the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Iglesia ni Cristo) as he concluded, is spot on when it comes to the Trinity.
@juancarlosaliba4866
@juancarlosaliba4866 3 жыл бұрын
Yet one Jewish rabbi admitted that Jews don't have theological objections to the Trinity. Michael Brown even concluded that there were these mysterious beings who acted like God: The Angel of the Lord/Son of Man (called by Jews by Lord of all creation, the Creator of men) and The Spirit of the Lord (called by Jews as One who empowers people to worship God) Philo of Alexandria concluded that the Messiah promised in the Old Testament is God and not a mere man. Then there's Yahweh. And yet in Isaiah's vision, these three, Yahweh, the Angel and the Spirit were praised by the seraphim as holy, holy, holy is Yahweh Sabaoth (LORD of Hosts!) Abraham saw these 3 men in Mamre promising him a son and predicting the doom of Sodom and Gomorrah which they fulfilled in Genesis Conclusion: Trinity isn't pagan. It wasn't developed as the Church developed. The Church just spelled out what Moses and the prophets taught on the ontology of God and what they witnessed in Christ's life, death and Resurrection. The Trinity is Jewish. And this is the Gospel. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us

Those who lived before 70 AD. And Philo of Alexandria was one of them. I just gave you one. Another is Dr. Michael Brown who knew the Hebrew Bible backwards and forwards. BTW, you don't read the Bible in plain English. Jesus used the Shema which used echad. He used predominantly the Septuagint. You're not sure of this? Check up Michael Brown's book and videos. Mind you, he was a former Jew.

Interesting...!!!!!!!!. My I add a little bit more to your comment. DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE DIFFERENT HEBREW WORDS FOR "LAW"?. In the Old Testament, there are different Hebrew words for the term Law, which may or may not be clearly indicated in the English translations. In fact, there are eight of them: >>> Dabar , Dath , Eduth , Hqquim , Mishpat , Mitzvah , Piqqudim and Torah. The Ten Commandments, literally called the “Ten Words” in ancient Hebrew, make up the core of God’s ethical, holy character and standards. In the broad sense of the word, Law is viewed as the entire Word of God. God’s Word are his propositions and/or commands set forth for life. In the narrow sense and according to the context of the Bible, Law has to do with the moral, ceremonial, and civil laws. The Mosaic law looked ahead with anticipation, the coming Savior and redemption. The Law administered the promises of that redeemer and salvation through various types, foreshadows, and rituals. The New Testament Gospels tell the great news that the Savior arrived who fulfilled the Law in every way. The best way to understand the Law is through the interpretive lens of the New Testament. The New Testament provides us with understanding for how the Law fits into the history of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. The Law points to Jesus Christ in every way. The New Testament understanding of the Law takes precedence as the interpreter of the Law and must also be understood in consort with the whole Bible. The basic, fundamental requirements of the Old Testament law are not done away with by the New Covenant; rather they are expressed in the fullest terms. Each of the commands of the Ten Words are quoted explicitly or referenced implicitly in the New Testament. However, no one is capable of keeping the Law perfectly. Jesus Christ came to perfectly and completely fulfill God’s Law. He does this on behalf of his people who receive and believe in him by faith alone. Love was and is always the disposition for keeping the Law Love fulfills God’s Law (Romans 13:8, 10). Jesus summarizes the Law in terms of living God (Commandments 1-4) and loving others (Commandments 5-10). Love fulfills the Law. The ground for obedience was and is love for God and for others. The ground of true obedience is not simply because it is commanded but because our sovereign and holy God has redeemed his people and did so from love. Jesus pays the penalty for failing to keep the Law and violating God’s holy standards. He then clothes true believers in Christ with his righteousness and imputes righteousness to believers’ accounts. Therefore, his people have a faith-response of gratitude expressed through love. The ground for our living and loving is the self-sacrificial love of Christ! The power for living out God’s imperatives is by the Holy Spirit

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ My comment: It sounds like a promotion for the invisible Hebrew desert god Yahweh who demands unconditional love in spite of inflicting pain and misery on all of his creations. Apparently Jesus was a slave to his god belief and ignored all the bad parts.
