Is it still British or is it multicultural like London?
@minskysfeedbackyianni13025 ай бұрын
@davidgalea6113 We (Shetland) are officially part of Scotland so therefore also part of Britain, for the present at least. But we are also multicultural to a much lesser degree than any big city. We have a small population of around 23,000 some of which are incomers from other countries in the UK & abroad. Most people here are very welcoming, but we all appreciate respect being shown by newcomers & visitors/tourists to our home & to people going about their business. Sadly I have witnessed tourists disrespectfully dropping litter when there was very obviously a bin near where they were sitting. Also just this weekend some tourists were verbally abusive to Shetland residents who were taking part in a lawful & peaceful silent demonstration. We are proud of our freedom here to demonstrate on any subjects we feel strongly about & anyone (including tourists) who try to interfere with this legal right will at best earn their country a bad reputation or possibly a delay in their holiday if they cross the line of our laws.

I just enjoyed 5 nights at the Queen's Hotel Lerwick (Could see the windows from my room on the video) and loved it. I watched people swimming every day. I went in but it was freezing. I went on a boat trip around the nearby Islands which was amazing. The bus service is really good & I saw a lot exploring the main Island. Hopefully I will get back & see a lot more next year

Hi, nice video but just a small tip to say that Jarlshof is pronounced "Yarlshof". It's the Nordic way of pronouncing J. You might have seen the ferry Hjaltland and it's the same so you pronounce it "H-y-a-l-t-l-a-n-d". The other thing is that despite Historic Scotland trying to make its stamp on us, we don't see ourselves as Scotland or being Scottish. :)

I visited Orkney in 2019 (pre Covid) car ferry from Gills Bay to St Margaret's Hope; a fantastic group of ancient islands. I've already arranged a week on Shetland next June, taking the car from Aberdeen to Lerwick. Took a self drive on the Western Islands a few months ago. All areas of Scotland have their own individual charm.

That darned notorious British weather - spoils so many adventures ! It COULD be beautiful in sunnier times, but it's only 'ok' when it's grey & depressing !
@minskysfeedbackyianni1302Ай бұрын
@veronicaroach3667 The Norsk & Scandinavian countries have a saying - "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing". But yes UK in general & Shetland in particular are not guaranteed sunshine holiday destinations! Then again some see the beauty in moody wild & windy weather, "horses for courses".

As a fan of desert islands, Shetland has long been on my to-visit list. But as the journey via the various ferries, continent - UK - Orkney - Shetland, takes longer, it won't be until I retire. After all, the landscapes in between don't just have to be endured. . .
@minskysfeedbackyianni1302Ай бұрын
derniederrheiner4518 "desert islands"?!! We don't have any desert here, just some nice sandy bays. If you mean deserted then certainly we have a relatively small population (around 23,000 I think) but Shetland is far from deserted. You will be able to find plenty of quiet places here though if that is your desire. By the way you can also reach Shetland by plane, there are numerous flights to & from seven days a week. Our airport (Sumburgh, though I think Lerwick is put on your ticket) only closes for Christmas day.

It all looks beautiful, but what about the work there? How much does a house cost there or to rent an apartment/house? How much does public transport cost there, how accessible is medical care, a dentist, a hospital, and what is the level of all that there? The video can bear anything, but the reality is often somewhere else entirely. But yes, the video is wonderful. Greetings from Glasgow ;-)

I used to work at the hospital there, like all island nations things aren’t always easy like being on the mainland, but what a place!!

Put it this way, if you're going to come here with the intention to live here then you've really got to want to live here!! Very pricey for some things but other things are not too bad. Rent can be very expensive as we have lots of travelling workers here for big construction projects but overall the house prices aren't too bad. My 3 bed semi with detached garage in the main town is about £210k ish. Plenty of work, nearly 100% employment since the mid 70's. Health care and nhs dentists is about the same as Scotland, rather patchy! The weather is the killer, damp and windy, very windy, but when you do get good weather there's no better place in the UK! Best to come for yourself and make your own mind up!

Beautiful ? NO, count the trees. Interesting Yes. I did a tour of duty with the RAF at Saxa Vord and had time to visit most of Unst. The people were great and self reliant. Dialling 999 might not get the response you want but your neighbours will always help out.
@minskysfeedbackyianni1302Ай бұрын
@MENSA.lady2 To be fair your experience was decades back (70s/80s?), certain things have changed a bit, like a 999 reaction to an emergency on Unst, which for the uninitiated is the furthest north island of our group of islands. It is usually reached by two ferry trips (driving through another island in between) & a long drive up our main island from the town to that first ferry. If an emergency required it now then police could get there quicker by helicopter. We even have a few more trees than there was in those days but you're right Shetland is not known for that type of landscape so for anyone reading this, certainly don't expect that. However "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" isn't it?
@MENSA.lady2Ай бұрын
@@minskysfeedbackyianni1302 Agreed. I was there in 1971. An aside, at that time the Muckle Flugga lighthouse (the most northerly inhabited building in the UK) was still manned and the RAF granted the keepers honary membership of the Sergeants mess. That way they could get a proper hot meal, a cold beer if they wanted and intelligent conversation. The lighthouse was later converted to automatic.
