I mean it's funny meme and all but, after playing all of the main line smt and persona games I can say this phase literally has no meaning lol I mean, not even Atlus knows what to do with the series

I so wish we would either get a re-release with QoL improvements or a remake with modern “SMT” systems.

That elevator may have taken that long but if thats the song playing while it goes I'm not complaining. That beat was sweet~ I would probably never play this game but am glad to have more context for this rather discreet series.

you can actually skip the elevator animation if you just leave while having the desired floor selected.

What a great review, from someone who obviously appreciates the nuance in these games. I’ve been a huge fan for years, and it was nice to hear your enthusiasm for good storytelling:)

This one's easily up there with your DQV video as one of my favorites, which speaks to your growth, since I knew nothing at all about SMTII before watching and held only the slightest interest. Your discussion of the game's handling of morality and its various routes, that people can and do justify heinous acts when they're absolutely convinced of their philosophy, that we can flip the script and recognize that gods need us and not the other way around; it's striking to find a videogame that takes the time to dig into any of this, let alone well, let alone in 1994 (though that year was blessed with at least two other greats in the genre, so there must've been something in the air). Don't know about you, but these are the sort of concepts that creep in when I'm trying to sleep in the dead of night. Given time, it's not hard to imagine someone MIGHT bioengineer a sort of messianic figure to compensate for god's neglect. It's commendable that you're able to really dive into SMTII's concepts without resorting to a summary of every character and event, *and* without ever feeling too vague; I still feel like there's a lot to discover for myself in this one. Your description of the setting and its many layers and factions really captivated me, so I shared your disappointment with the game's drawbacks. Sounds like Atlus was really onto something here.

You know, the whole fighting/confronting God over the decision to wipe out the entire world to start over kinda reminds me of the final season (or rather one of the last few episodes of the final season) of a show called Supernatural (you probably heard about this whole series, if not it's a great one to watch). Because in it God was seen as a benevolent caring being and the angels and some holier than thou people said he was capricious and cruel. It turns out that he actually was cause the show's version of God was basically writing out stories and scenarios out of boredom and when the two main characters of the show decided they didn't wanna be his puppets/playthings, "God" became angry and tried to destroy the entire world all because humanity was finally trying to break from the idea that humans were his play things.

It's really unfortunate, because SMT 2 really *deserves* to be the better game. Its world and characters are so much richer, and its gameplay can't be cheesed and feels much deeper. ...But dammit, man, actually playing this game is such a pain in the ass.

@@halowaffle25 Right. Which unfortunately is why SMT2 is both unexpectedly and unnecessarily the most frustrating retro SMT game experience outside of non-Akira SMT if with its infernal Sloth Dungeon.
