In 2017 I was at the Shins concert in Portland with my girlfriend. It started pouring, like really bad, and they had to cut the show short and play one last song - this was it. I had no ring or intention of proposing that night, but suddenly knew with my whole spirit it was time. We were soaked, cold, and shivering… but in that moment both happier than we ever had been. We’re still together and will be always , and every time I hear this song it makes me tear up.

I actually really, really appreciate this music video. I learnt about the song through HIMYM but never bothered watching the music video. Then I checked a playlist and saw it popup. I've watched it atleast 8 times in a row and I love it. People are busy saying "here frum himym!!!111!!" but ignore the video. It's really cool if you think about it. The dad genuinely tried to be a fun father. He was just wreckless and it angered their boring, buzz kill mother. The dad obviously loves and cares for the kids and was doomed. The mother snapped and took his kids away. They all grew up and blamed the dad. They hate him, as he states in the beginning. The curly haired kid and sister seemed to have injured themselves and blamed it on the dad. The third son was quiet and shy and didn't enjoy the dad's games. But I think this hatred he kept all these years has to do with the girl in the green dress. I assume she was a good family friend and after the mom took them away, she became the "one that got away." He loved her and had to leave the green dress girl, thinking it was forever. See, they blame their misfortunes all these years on the dad, but he seems to genuinely care and trying to be a fun father. This actually really saddens me. Men obviously lose custody cases way more than women, and the dad was trying to just be cool. But the kids got taken away and they didn't blame their cold, buzz kill mom. No, they didn't understand and took it out on the dad. The dad lost everything. His kids hated him for life and he died knowing that. He died a lonely life in the home he lost everything in. When he tried being a fun, charismatic dad and done goofed a few times, he lost *everything.* When he died, he has one final goof. He is demolishing the house and nobody gets the deed. But he has brought everyone together. He brought the family back to his house and everyone seems happy and one again. His son even gets his childhood crush and likely marry later. He lost everything but was the one who brought everyone back together. All it took was... his death. (Unlikely but I like to think it was intentional) Seriously, props to the dad in the music video! I'm sad no one else went in depth on this and no one else is appreciating the music video, but it really did leave an impact on me.

This song was on my recommendations so I thought "hey, why not" and then I realised that I had just found a great new song and I enjoyed the video and found the ending quite funny actually. I was feeling pretty good and had a bit of a laugh so I played it again while reading the comments this time, and on my third replay I came across this comment. I am now crying. I feel like I can relate to most of what you explained about the video. My dad can't be around any more due to a seizure that left him brain damaged. He now can't really talk properly so he gets more frustrated and so he is more violent than he was and my sisters blame him as if he had deliberately hurt them. I feel really weird now. I still feel kind of happy but kind of sad, but now I can appreciate the video more. Before I wasn't really thinking about what was happening in the video but will probably think about other music videos more now. I guess you had an impact on me too :)

Ben, why do you think, children hate dad? I see, you wrote "as he states in the beginning". Can you explain that? Lickely, they didn't wanted to leave as you can see at 3:30. So I'm not really shure, they didn't like him. In the beginning he said: "Each one of you hits my goods", sounds like not actual reason. Perhaps dad wanted them to look back on this time. But I agree that son with straight hair didn't like dad. I don't actually understand what does inscription on the cake of this guy mean (1:49). Look, there is written "happy belated bithday", and "belated" is ephasaised by red line. Strange, isn't. Why didn't celebrate it? The kid looks really sad, and I can't understand, why did dad write it. After that kid throws cake in the dad. What was relationships between them? This moment is complicated for me. And what is mother pointing in the next frames. Is she pointing on this or still about buzz? What do you think So, maybe, dad admits that he wasn't right in this moment. That's why he writes about "awful memories" in the letter? Of course, it is also about breaking up. In the end they everybody loves him, as he got back the time and as you said bring them together. Dad hasn't changed. So there is goof. All as what you wrote) All in all, it's really inspiring and thought-provoking video. Please, tell what you think about two points: 1) Why do you think two kids blamed dad? I see only case for one of them. 2) About the second article. This birthday cake. I'm puzzled a bit. Other things are clear for me. And I like your comment. It's is really deep/deliberate and it has right points as I think. I can be unclear in some ways, because of language. And also I could understand some words wrong, but actually I don't think so. Hope you will answer!

I've read a few articles and thoughts on this music video and although my assessment may not be accurate, it was quite different from the other opinions and may give a different light to this music video. Instead of taking the hatred aspect of the family dynamic seriously, take it tongue and cheek instead. It will change the entire feel for this video. First of all, if his kids really hated his guts, why would they be at his funeral? Secondly, instead of looking at the chase for the house deed as a spiteful and revengeful trick, think of it as a masterful plan to remind his children of their times growing up. Their father was always there video-taping, holding pinatas, throwing them parties, and making their times in life as rich and memorable as he could. The real gift his father could give his kid was worth more than the house, it was a reminder of the memories they all shared. The wrecking ball only destroyed the chance for jealousy and hostility. There was nothing left to fight over, only good memories to be had. This is the way I saw this video and continue to see it. But I get the feel most aren't catching on to it this way.

I actually showed my parents this song around when the album came out. Since then, it became a family song. My parents absolutely adored this particular song in our old house. About 6 months ago, my mother passed away from a brain hemorrhage and we moved out of our house to avoid the negative memories. My dad specifically chose this song as a song to remember my mother because it reminds him of how they got together. The music video hits home on how everything feels when you move away from your childhood house. The terrible, awful memories become appreciated because of the learning experiences and the direction those events put you on your path down this crazy life. Everytime I watch this music video, it serves as a ton of different memories and I deeply appreciate that this exists. Thank you James Mercer and everyone in The Shins for enriching my parents and my life.

This video always brings me to tears. He was obviously the most awesome Dad ever, but they didn't realize it until after he was gone! I see so much animosity, and feuding going on in families, even in my own, but life is too short for petty squabbles. If this video does anything, I hope it causes each of us to want to become more loving to our family members who are still alive, to begin appreciating each other before it's too late!

You're kidding, right? They all hated him because he pitted them against each other (in humiliating and dangerous ways) for their whole lives. For his own amusement, he treated his kids like gladiators at the Roman Colosseum. I suppose he realized it at the end, which was why he pulled that final stunt with the deed to the house. It was his twisted way of apologizing and trying to make amends with them.
@irishquad8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Dougan It seemed to me that in the end, they realized that he wasn't pitting them against each other in a malicious way, which is why they were all united in laughter at the end, they had misunderstood him. Either way, why the apparent exasperation over my impression of a music video??

I don't think this video is showing happy times. It's showing repressed anger, learning that you can only win by beating those around you, a mom drinking to deal with her family, a sibling who was too shy and withdrawn to compete but was forced to anyway. If anything, the positive aspect was when the wrecking ball tore the house down - symbolism for letting go of that chapter in their lives to be able to move forward.

You know, this is a sad fact of life, but the terrible memories tend to leave more of a permanent impression than the good ones. I can tell you a thousand bad memories from my early childhood in great detail, but only ten good memories with a vague description at best. I found it tragically comedic that the first memory that came to each adult's mind was of the bad moments during what seemed like a really fun party. And each accident was just that-an accident. I just wish the happy moments in life were more memorable than the scarring ones.

I love how the video has a story within the main story. The shy brother hates his dad because he wrecked the only chance he had to be with the girl who eventually married his brother. When he pulled her out from the boxes and gave her the bracelet, she almost kissed him, but then his brother yells in the attic (because of the chaos his father made) and the girl runs after him. She married the curly-haired brother after that, but she kept the bracelet because she always loved the other brother, and in the end, after they nearly died, they kiss. There is so much detail, I bet there's even more stuff in the background.
@christianprestes81758 жыл бұрын
No, the girl is not married to the older brother. When they moved from the house she was left behind, and probably had never seen any of the brothers again til now. She was just comforting the older brother at the beginning cause she had no intimacy with the younger brother, he couldn't even exchange looks with her. It would be fucked up if she kissed her husband's brother at the end, don't you think?
@Funnylovefunnylife8 жыл бұрын
I think it would be fucked up, but this is a kinda fucked up video, so I didn't think it was out of the question. I also assumed she was married to the older brother because she had a wedding ring (could be engagement ring), and she was consoling him. But I see your point, and I think you might be right. It makes way more sense the way you explain it. I just still think I'd be more dramatic if she was his brother's wife and in the end they just said "fuck it, i want to be with you".
@Modulater838 жыл бұрын
That's the great thing about this video, so much story presented in under 5 minutes. My take is that the older son was always the "favorite". He got the girl, he got the birthday cake (not the belated cake), he got called "my son" not "my other son". So he was a bit full of himself. The younger son was overshadowed, but it was his attention and sensitivity that got him his brother's girlfriend in the end. As for the older son and the girl being married, I am not sure. In my head they were a couple but not married yet (making the kiss at the end a bit less creepy).

Welcome back home everyone, as you know, I am now dead, and this video shows my last will and testament. Between my three children, I couldn't decide which of you to keep the house to, as each of you grew up here with me. So I didn’t choose any of you, because, as you know, each of you hates my guts. Well this is just a simple song To see what you've done I told you about all those fears And away they did run You sure must be strong Instead, I've hidden the deed somewhere in the house, and the first of you to find it gets everything, ready? get steady, go! You feel like an ocean Being warmed by the sun When I was just nine years old I swear that I dreamt Your face on a football field And a kiss that I kept Under my vest Apart from everything, the heart in my chest I know that things can really get rough When you go in love Don’t go thinking you gotta be tough Complete like a stone Could be there’s nothing else in our lives So critical as this little hole My life in an action boat, marooned on a cliff You brought me a great big flood And you gave me a lift God what a gift You tell me with your tongue And your breath goes in the lungs And the flow that filled the rift I know that things can really get rough When you go in love Don’t go thinking you gotta be tough Complete like a stone Could be there’s nothing else in our lives So critical as this little hole. This isn't actually a deed to the house, I was kidding. Let's be honest, this place is full of awful memories for all of us, so I've already sold the estate and I am having the house demolished. But best of luck to all of you. Love, Dad, Well this isn't be a simple song to say what you’ve done I told you about all those fears And away they did run You sure must be strong P.S. The wrecking crew arrives at 2:00 p.m And you feel like an ocean Being warmed by the sun Remember walking a mile to your house That glow in the dark I made a fumbling play for your heart And the extra of the spark You wore a charm in a chain That I stole special for you Love’s such a delicate thing that we do We’ve nothing to prove Which I never knew

because no matter how awful it was or how much abuse you dealt with in that house, it is still your house, your memories. you would rather own that house and keep it out of spite for all the bad crap that happened there then see it destroyed. destroying it is like breaking a part of yourself and no matter how awful that part is, it still makes you, you. the house is part of your identity no matter what and sometimes its hard to let go of that.

Honey, Well, this is just a simple song, To say what you done. I told you 'bout all those fears, And away they did run. You sure must be strong, And you feel like an ocean being warmed by the sun. When I was just nine years old, I swear that I dreamt, Your face on a football field, And a kiss that I kept, Under my vest. Apart from everything, But the heart in my chest. Chorus: I know that things can really get rough, When you go it alone. Don't go thinking you gotta be tough, And bleed like a stone. Could be there's nothing else in our lives so critical, As this little home. My life in an upturned boat, Marooned on a cliff. You brought me a great big flood, And you gave me a lift. Girl, what a gift. Will you tell me with your tongue, And your breath was in my lungs, And we float up through the rift. Chorus: I know that things can really get rough, When you go it alone. Don't go thinking you gotta be tough, And bleed like a stone. Could be there's nothing else in our lives so critical, As this little home. Well, this would be a simple song, To say what you done. I told you 'bout all those fears, And away they did run. You sure must be strong, When you feel like an ocean being warmed by the sun. Remember walking a mile to your house, A glow in the dark I made a fumbling play for your heart, And the act struck a spark. You wore a charm on the chain that I stole, Especial for you. Love's such a delicate thing that we do, With nothing to prove, Which I never knew.

I hate this. My dad died when I was young and I never got to experience any of this. He battled an addiction for the entire time I knew him, and just wanted to get rid of it. Just like the dad here he was trying his best and until not long ago I never really understood what made him a decent person. He never wanted that addiction, he got clean, and then he died after two weeks of being home. I didn't know what I was getting into with song but I didn't expect to break down crying. God I miss my dad. I want him back.

Be Brave in front of sadness and pain. There will end some days. Write a letter about what you would have loved to live and do with your father and keep it. One day, you will become a father and have kids. Then read it. I hope that you will find some peace in it.

Is it weird that everything you said here happend to me, my dad died after a week or two of being clean and after he got out of jail the last time I saw him I left early to go to my friends and never saw him again.
@lukele24835 жыл бұрын
I originally had a negative view of the music video, but if you were to watch the video at face value and use the song and some subtle camera techniques for deeper information, it would seem not completely of hatred. The video starts with washed out colors, in which the world is boring and gray, but whenever a memory is uncovered, it would seem as though the world became colorful. I like to think that the father tried to give to the kids as many memorable moments throughout their childhood, though they did not understand it at the time, and is now reviving those moments. As said by another comment, " think of it as a masterful plan to remind his children of their times growing up". The destruction of the house would remove any such jealousy that would result from the inheritance, and leave only the colorful memories they all share. In the end, I think they truly appreciated their father as they stood where the dad stood as he watched them leave. Besides if they truly hated him, why show up at the funeral, it would be better to spite their father if they did not attend his funeral.

Simple Song is up there as one of my 'favourite' songs. The nature of the song (and the MV) is a sense of nostalgia amidst the chaos of living. Its a theme I appreciate, because it reminds me that no matter how chaotic life is or how much you will screw up, there is perhaps a hope that eventually it'll all be worth it.

One of the most insightful and poignant descriptions of love from the male point of view ever. The fumbling; the self-sabotage; the struggle to express our gratitude to the person who saves us from ourselves; the overdue realization of what truly matters in life.
