Remember in the “German Situation” episode when Finland tried to tell America a joke, and he laughed before Finland finished telling him? In the episode where he meets Tony, America told his boss about that weird material he found, but his boss proceeds to gaslight him. We later on see America alone tearing up over being denied and rejected, but when he meets his alien, he’s happy and chipper again. Those are only two examples. Really, America and Russia are very similar personality-wise. It’s just that layer of over-confidence and loudness for America that distracts people, which is why it’s so upsetting when people butcher both his and Russia’s character when writing them in fanfics.

I think a big issue in the fandom is that hetalians assume that each country's entire personality is based on what their government structure is. And while that is partially true, their culture makes up a much bigger part of who they are. The reason America is clueless, patriotic, gluttonous, and is obsessed with heroes is that that's just the American stereotype. I think a lot of fans forget what this show actually is, which is one big play on stereotypes, and that's what makes it so entertaining! And I also think a lot of people don't seem to grasp that this is entirely fictional. As long as you don't condone inc*st, p*dophilia, or even possessive behavior in the real world, I don't think it hurts to enjoy those scenarios in fiction with characters you like the dynamic of. That being said, in a fandom like Hetalia, all you really need to do is be open-minded and understand how to separate fiction from reality.

I always headcanoned that English dub America was just sarcastic AF. There are definitely Americans who are very patriotic and practically worship democracy. They are also very ignorant of various cultures even though we were built by various cultures. Ironic, I know. Basically, on one hand, you have people who have the "America is best" kind of attitude and on the other hand, you have... the rest of us. And thus, America is basically roasting those Americans while also being open-mined about other cultures. I will say that I do get surprised when foreigners say they actually like us because so many of them believe the stereotypes and think we're the scum of the Earth.

Not only that. I feel like some people find it hard to ship him with other nations, because they can't separate real life history from fiction (the real US has done horrible things to other nations in real life, unlike the Hetalia version). And also, I sometimes see America as the type of energetic student you meet in school, and he's the type to poke his nose in other friends groups. And when you try to talk or get close to him, others will give you that dirty look, because you're with someone they don't like.

Probably because it’s the healthiest ship for both~ As much as I love RusAme, there is no denying America’s healthiest relationship is with Lithuania. Lithuania respects America and America adores Lithuania. The two get along very well and Lithuania actually seems to enjoy America’s excited puppy personality. Lithuania is actually like a mother hen to America, taking care of him because that was his job. He worked for America and they ended up becoming close friends. It’s canon that Lithuania asked Russia once about America after coming home from a meetings, this was apparently during the Soviet times since everyone was living with Russia. It shows that even in times of tension, Lithuania still worries for him.

I feel that Russia being a sadistic character would be normal if it was like during the 1930's to 1970's. because come on. Doing a deep dive into the history of the Cold War, it really would make sense. The fact that this is a care free anime makes me sometimes forget about the Great Purge, Gulag, Dictator, unfair votings of the occupied countries. Though I'd like to imagine that he'd didn't agree with any of the atrocities, the fact that he canonically whipped Lithuania just sticks with me. So if I see a sadistic version of him in an old timeline, I really don't even bat an eye anymore. And them just always being at each other throats makes sense too, considering the tension between almost every scene between them, the funding of the Korean War, the blocked supplies for East Berlin, and that one time where they had a face off in front of the Berlin Wall with tanks. I can't see them without seeing straight up toxicity and abuse. Again, there are so many rape doujins and fanfics out there about these specific characters, and it's always America being.. well, either overly submissive like you said, or Russia being a straight up sadistic, terribly abusive person... As someone who writes in my own nationverse AU, America is one of those characters I particularly can’t imagine shipping, though not as much as some others like Prussia, even though my AU is already pretty shipping-hostile due to how nation psychology works there. Even if for different reasons than in canon; America is just too much of a Superpower, having a lot of friends and allies but not being particularly close to most of them, and his closest bonds are within the Anglo family (I make England definitely his father, no adoption BS; I have no idea why Hima did that). Then again logic rarely stops shippers, so... Btw I like the dub lines. They’re way more stereotypical and fit more in this supposed satire. And I’m Japanese.

I think the only people who can ship would be Vietnamese or Vietnamese Americans because anything otherwise might invalidate the war trauma, but also you have to remember the nations represent their people, not the government, just like how America bombed Japan in WW2 but AmeriPan is still popular because we don't blame the characters for war crimes, we blame the actual real life country and government.

I hate the dub so much it's unreal. Seriously, the dub is objectively bad. On another note, even though AmeLiet is my main, with Romerica coming in second (And I ship PruAme...and I kind of like AmeIta), I also like AmeSey. I think I ship America with too many people. Send help.

@James J. Lol no. The original is not boring. Hetalia is hysterical in Japanese. The dub contradicts the source material, outright changes characters' entire personalities/has character assassination, and has pretty much nothing in common with the source material. The funimation dub is trash because it does not care about the material it's adapting. A lot of the dub jokes are Not Okay. Holocaust jokes are not funny. Racist jokes are not funny. The dub isn't funny, it's just edgy and offensive. It's bad. The manga and the sub >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> dub.

@James J. Not all comedy derives from misery. Satirizing history and countries' relations with each other is fine. Outright mocking tragic events like the dub does is not. The dub doesn't make the characters more interesting, nor does it make them "more bluntly true". It butchers them. The characters represent their people, not their governments. That is canon. And if an adaptation ignores and goes against the source material like the Hetalia dub does, then it fails as an adaptation. The sub characters also aren't bland. And people today aren't babies, they just care about other people, but ok boomer.
