It is starting. It is possible to open damaged battery packs and replace a broken single battery, or even all the single small batteries inside the pack. Soon I believe we will see companies that will be certified to refurbish old battery packs. And perhaps even exchange the batteries from NMC to phosphat or sodium batteries. This will be a whole new business. Different producers of the small batteries already excist, both NMC and phosphat, and probably soon also sodium - lf not already. As a consequense, new batteries and battery packs will become much cheaper due to competition, and no more monopoly by the car brands. Already now a few startups in Northern Europe has started planning for this.

Well for me Sam I am not a fan of EV's and I think that if I ever was made to have one - which I could never afford from any aspect of owning one the cost of a replacement battery would bankrupt me as like so many others like me who are on a pension for an example. Plus the cost of buying insuring one, the cost of the tyres which I gather wear out three times more frequently than ICE powered vehicles and require "special" tyres at that, and the risk of fire within the battery is simply not an option. To boot the wait for the vehicle to charge up would simply drive me (no pun) quite insane. I did note that you talked of the cost of battery replacement is quite reasonable but to me like may others who have a limited income ie: on a pension that cost is simply not a situation that we could afford.

There is the discrepancy between EVs and ice vehicles the cost of replacing the EV battery pack is far more expensive than changing and engine or tranny in a ice vehicle . Must remember there is labor removing the old and replacing with new . Another factor that's not discussed is how easy a battery replacement is for a model of vehicle . Nio makes battery replacement for their vehicles in the minutes in there battery replacement centers . So buying a EV with the ease of replacement could be a factor in terms of labor cost . In the end it should be easier than a engine from a ice vehicle but for EVs replacing a battery pack is not very cost effective at this time . Eventually a new industry will be developed and swapping out a battery may get to $3500 for a swap or maybe cheaper . Now 20k doesn't make sense .

EV battery life is really not that much of an issue. Quote from EVBox: "Nissan, for example, has been selling electric cars for 12 years, and executive Nic Thomas claims that almost all EV batteries they’ve manufactured during that time are still in use. Likewise, Tesla reports its vehicles to have an average lifespan of around 200,000 miles in the US and 150,000 miles in the EU." The key to better battery life is charging correctly. This means the dealers profit is the same......2-4 grand per car whether it's a $30,000 Chevy or a $60,000 Cadillac .Dealers make a heck of a lot more money marking up parts and accessories. I think there should be some standardization of battery shapes, cooling system, capacity and hardware and software interfaces. This would allow for competition on replacement batteries and an actual ability to replace them. Some cars, e.g.. Forcing auto makers to allow for replacing a battery and forcing them to document their battery is the only way to lower replacement battery costs.

Tesla has always offered replacement batteries, and I suspect all other makes do as well. If a any car is so badly damaged that the battery needs replacement, the car is likely totaled anyway and likely has massive structural damage. It is now January, 2024, and there was recent controversy over the charge for a replacement battery pack for a Hyundai Ionic 5, at over $60,000 Canadian ($50k+ American). I don't care what its capacity is, that is a ridiculous liability to have hanging over your head after purchasing an EV. His original pack, btw, was damaged by running over an object in the road, so there was no manufacturer's warranty coverage.

Hold my beer. Porsche Panamera hybrid has a 9.4 kWh battery. If it fails, as they tend to do just out of warranty, replacement is $25k-$28k usd. On a 2014-16, that is about entire value of vehicle. When it does fail, car is a brick.

If this is very unlikely like in 1 in one thousand etc. manufacturers should provide lifetime warranty, replace for free and insure themselves (of course not in the case of user related damages to the battery pack like catastrophic accidents).

Makes perfect sense when you consider taxpayer and ICE manufacturer subsidies keep EV prices about 1/2 what they would otherwise be. Although EVs get subsidized, parts when sold separately (including the battery) do not. Maybe that is why no one makes an EV with batteries not included.

I don't understand why manufacturers don't lease batteries. Increase sales and electric vehicle adoption by significantly reducing up front vehicle prices. Reduce risk for car buyers, which will also increase uptake. And create a steady revenue stream, which is what legacy auto is concerned about losing with electric vehicles. Why isn't this happening? Buy the vehicle, pay a monthly fee for the battery, never worry about it again.
@tpraba1511 ай бұрын
No point buying EV vehicles. Not only battery but many more problems. My Mercedes EC aircon is always problem which is needed to be replaced every two years at exorbitant cost. They say it is because all are controlled by the battery unlike a petrol car. Big monopoly by the car manufacturers. The customer care are of no use.

I think your comparison is irrelevant. Both BMW I3 and VW eGolf were concept cars, with very low production numbers. The BMW i.e. was built in a way, that never would be possible in mass production. Loads of carbin fibre etc. To find the real cost of a battery change you should compare Tesla with ID3/4/5 etc and BMW I5, I4 and so on. These are cars meant to be realistic choices in their segment.

If the batteries were so great, then why is the degradation rate up to 30% NOT covered with the battery warranty?
@Jz-fj5ki11 ай бұрын
Ev is such a pain. YOU need to plan your trip according to the availability of charging stations. sometimes when you reach the station you will find many cars charging there and you will have to wait. if you charge your car at a supercharger all the time your battery degradation will be 7% every year. if you want to preserve your battery for a long time you need to maintain your charge between 20%to 80% and also should be charged at slow chargers. 20% to 80% means that you roughly can't use about 40% for better longevity of the battery . if you are on full load with full passengers and also if you accelerate fast your range will become half of what the company claimed you get. Within 10 to 11 years of use, you have to change the battery and it will cost 72% of the actual cost of the car. During this period you might have to change the electric motor which is also expensive. For different charging stations, you need to install different applications and load money into them. If you travel to remote locations not necessary that you will find a charging station there. According to climate battery performance and range will vary a lot.
