Did the cost of this 1500 mile road trip surprise you? Did you expect it to be more or less?

Duke, thx! I love road trip vids. A trick I do to equate charging costs to gas is to just move the decimal one position over. For instance at the Knoxville Flying J it would be $6.70 per gallon. Not exact but pretty close and easy to do. EV road trips are expensive. I try to hold the costs Dow by choosing a cpo (TesSC, EVgo, EA) and become a member. That helps. Thx for the video. I enjoyed watching

4:08 FYI as a Model Y and $TSLA owner, I want to say, there are many of us who are happy to have non-Teslas charging at superchargers, especially with what I have heard about the reliability of Electrify America charges and some others. Personally, I would rather have a Tesla than anything else, but to each his own, and there is no doubt that the R1S and R1T are great vehicles.

I met a guy road tripping as couple of weeks ago, we were both charging at my local Chevrolet dealership that has a free fast charger. I just wanted to try it out so let him go first, and we chatted for 20 minutes while he charged. Always worth checking if there's a free charger on your route, at least for now.

I picked the hotel because they had free charges, and this is how I will choose my hotels from now on. Thanks for sharing that information on free chargers.

Love your videos Duke. Any idea when Rivian is going to open up their chargers to non Rivians ? There is one in a perfect location for one of our regular trips.

Man you are doing God's work. 99% ev youtuber lies on their channel. I went back to ice truck after owning rivian and F150 lightning. Not worth the hassle.
@rylans.53653 сағат бұрын
It’s not for everyone and no, 99% of EV KZbinrs aren’t lying. What made it a hassle for you? Of course Tesla does not have a long distance charging issue, they have it worked out. I road tripped with both the Tesla Model Y and Kia EV6. Charging on electrify America was surprisingly not a problem and I drove from Los Angeles to Phoenix and it was not as bad as I expected compared to Tesla superchargers. Plus I only road trip once or twice a year so all of the time I’m charging at home
@8bajwa83 сағат бұрын
They start with how much money they are saving that's lie. EVs are not there yet. May be 5 years from today when price is comparable to ice car. Running into broken chargers. As he mentioned chargers placed in very dark parking lot not safe being a sitting duck. Cost more than my ice truck to travel same distance. Lot of vampire drain that. I do have multiple cars so Rivian was loosing range just sitting in driveway. It's like hole in your gas tank. Expensive to insure. Forget to mention I still have 3 EVs in my stable. But I won't road trip in Ev. Ev is Great commuter car for sure.

Just to be clear gas stations are far more dangerous than any EV charging station I have been to. People get carjacked and killed at the gas station all the time. Also, I only have to go to charging stations only for about a week out of the year because I charge at home. So that is what I'm comparing my charging experience to because the main reason I switched to an EV was to avoid going to the gas station. As far as the ownership experience, there is no way I would go back to a gas car. I consider ICE an inferior product to EVs in most use cases. Its like comparing an old floor model TV to a flatscreen TV. And yes, I have saved a lot of time and money with an EV over an ICE.

The way I look at it is that since I primarily charge at home, taking a few road trips a year with up to $0.60/ kwh is something I don't mind as long as the network is reliable with at least 150kwh. I totally understand the upfront costs and CPOs trying to be profitable. Just be reliable. EV naysayers bring the high cost of road tripping but once I ask them how many times a year they road trip vs charging at home will is way cheaper, they told me that I have a point. I've used EA with our R1S and they suck in reliability and glad that we can use Tesla superchargers. A lot of education is needed to have the public looking at EVs and charging different rather than politicizing the issue.

It cost me more and I had to make more stops compared to the same trip that was taking in a ICE vehicle. Course a Chevrolet Bolt EUV isn't really an idea road trip vehicle.

Thanks for the latest vid..You were in my hometown of Knoxville and I play guitar in a classic rock band and we are always in P Forge or Gatlinburg! I drive a MYP and just got back from a Florida roadtrip. My lease ends in three months and I'm pricing R1T's and the R1S 's. My question to you is..which one and why? BK..
@thedukeofmiddleville9 сағат бұрын
Thanks! Small world. We have both the R1T and R1S, and if you need to move people or pets go with the R1S. If you need to move more things than people go with the R1T. I prefer the R1T myself which is why we choose it for road trips. I hope this helps, and thanks for commenting!

It does! I would be putting my band equipment, wife and dog in the R1T..But not in that order haha. I'm trying to test drive one without having to drive to Nashville or Atlanta..Thanks again for the info..And one day I'll tell you about my 11 year old self getting lost in the St Louis Zoo...

40 bucks for 62 kilowatts is absolute b*******! I don't understand what the hell is going on. I pay three cents per kilowatt. The difference is ridiculous! And I mean apps a fuckinglutely ridiculous!

I do not think you could have charged at the hotel with a J1772 adapter as vehicles can used the Tesla Superchargers, but not the Level 2 at the hotels.
@thedukeofmiddleville10 сағат бұрын
Others that own the same charger had the same issue with it being set up as Tesla only. I believe if it was only for Teslas they would not have installed the dual charger with the J1772 connector.

@@thedukeofmiddleville Your logic is sound, but I had been told by multiple sources/folks, that destination chargers are for Tesla only and not for non-Tesla. If you find out to the contrary, please let us know in one of your upcoming videos. After initially posting my reply, I did a bit of further research. You are correct. It would appear one "should" be able to sue a destination charger 🙂

Do you have premium membership to EA or EV Go to buy down the cost of memberships?
@thedukeofmiddleville10 сағат бұрын
Yes, but the EVgo membership does not apply to GM Energy EVgo charges. However, GM vehicles are suppose to get a reduced rate as I understand.

solme people arer fool enought to not use the tesla supercharger network. The most reliable and with lower prices than any pretender.
