Crazy how music works. Because of the eastern vibe in Friedman's solo after the first verse you'd think the song is about the wars in Middle East. Maybe the lyrics are more general than just about the Irish thing.

“Brother will kill brother” Meaning as in the human race we’re all brothers “Killing for religion something I don’t understand “ Most wars boil down to people fighting over who’s religion is the real one and I don’t necessarily mean traditional religion WWII was ultimately a cult leader’s attempt to eliminate a whole race of people. “ Fools like me who cross the sea and come to foreign lands “ Meaning It’s ridiculous for the US to get involved in every foreign conflict like the US government knows best . I don’t think it was about any specific war but how Dave not knowing the whole history of the conflict wasn’t qualified to have an opinion nor voice it on stage it was foolish for him to speak on some he knew nothing about I’ve always took the song as a statement on Americans holier than thou attitudes and trying to police the world, and how pointless most wars are when you boil it all down to the bare bones most wars are fought over people having a different set of beliefs and one side wants to force their belief on another. Anyway it’s one of my favorite songs, it said exactly the things my 12 year old mind couldn’t put into words it summed up my thoughts on the US war machine. We watched the first desert storm on prime time tv and my young mind thinking why are we doing this? Why are we watching it on TV ? Why is it necessary for the US to go to war with Iraq . Looking back on it now it’s clear it was all about the oil and the US dollars it is traded in. The mighty religion of the dollar right ? I think Dave was just observing the world and shaking his head maybe. Don’t misunderstand war anywhere and between anyone is terrible and it hurts the innocent most of all . I just don’t think it’s America’s business to get involved much less fund both sides of whatever name a conflict. We have plenty of problems at home that needs to be addressed before we go off policing the world.

I used to work with a guy from Ireland. I asked him why the Catholics and Protestants hate each other over there, and he said they don't. He said the conflict has absolutely nothing to do with religion, but rather land. But it just so happened that one sight was majority Protestant, and the other side majority Catholic. But they weren't hating each other because of their respective religions.
@barryb902 жыл бұрын
@@mournblade1066 Quite a substantial amount of Irish Republican heroes were Protestants, including literally all the founders of the movement (Society of United Irishmen). There was no religious issue in the Republic. As you said yourself, the religion is a good indicator of who they were, although not necessarily 100% accurate. Irish nationalists tend to be catholic background, Descendants of British planters were of a Protestant background. The sectarian element of that conflict in Northern Ireland is the Orange Order and the now defunct RUC police force.

I often read in places that his comments caused a riot. I don't really remember it that way. There was initially silence and shock, and then some chants of "Britain" from sections in the crowd. People were shouting stuff. The main thing was that some people near the front started spitting on them and I seem to remember they either walked off stage for a while, or threatened to do so. I think that added fuel to the fire and we experienced the comical irony of Dave Mustaine lecturing the crowd on things you shouldn't do at concerts. There was frustration and anger, but I don't remember any kind of riot. Mind you, we did leave pretty quickly afterwards - so maybe I missed it. I expect they were escorted away only as a precaution. I think its one of those stories that gets a bit more embellished with each year that goes by.

Once I heard the line Killing for religion something I don’t understand , I was just blown away I’d already at a young age thought so many wars have been fought and people died over religious reasons. I agree with Dave killing for religion is stupid. I love Dave he steps in it then stomps around in it and crawls out the other side better for it . Fools like me who cross the sea was him basically say that the US shouldn’t be world police getting involved in every foreign conflict because we want to sell weapons to both sides that will be used 20 years later to kill our children when Uncle Sam decides another oil field ( or poppy field ) needs liberating. The more I think about it Holy Wars might be the best metal song ever written, I’ve always loved it and considered it an epic masterpiece, but man Dave really said it all . That’s just considering the lyrics and on top of all those riffs and the guitar clinic Dave and Marty put on , yeah it’s got to be at least in the conversation of best metal song ever written.

@panrick2 жыл бұрын
There's one thing I think Dave, and many others, still doesn't get about this, The "Trouble's" are always painted as a conflict about religion, but it's really about Imperialism..England treated the Irish terribly for centuries.For example, the Irish Potato "Famine" was really a genocide, because the English took all the food from Ireland and left the Irish with only potatoes to eat essentially, so when the potatoes got a disease the Irish starved. That doesn't have anything to do with differences between religions, it has to do with England being horrible and heartless empire. The only reason people in general claim its Protestants vs Catholics is because Irish are Catholic and English are Protestant, its just a way to differentiate the two groups, they never actually killed each other because they believed the other persons religion was bad. They killed each other because of politics and a long history of very bad treatment. That conflict would've still happened even if they were all the same religion. The Irish wanted self governance, they wanted England off their shores, they wanted revenge for past crimes. Religion was just a way to tell the others apart.

When he was was about to play "Anarchy", he did say power to the IRA, sorry Dave I was sober like most at the end of the gig. Also there was no crowd split, people were just angry with you, yes you nearly started a riot, because the crowd were gonna dismantle you!. Also you said you were escorted out of Norn Iron" & woke in Dublin, another strange or missing memory. A friend of mine worked in the Europa hotel in Belfast, & meet ye all in Belfast, unless the escort was after breakfast, & ye gave him t shirts & merchandise. The thing is if he'd have admitted in 88 sorry I said the IRA, I was talking when I should have been listening. I love Megadeath, I'm so glad he came back to explain & put right his error, not very many musicians would have, go to show the man's character, & to realise, I phocqued up, & Megadeath have played here from that incident occurred., & always a great gig. Thanx Dave ✊🐺

"Give Ireland back to the Irish" should not be a controversial statement!

Kinda missed the point a bit in this its more about giving northern ireland back to the irish people , it was taken by the british. Its part of the island of ireland …

Tell the Irish to move back, then! Why do they all live in England ? If only it were so simply! The IRA almost got Margo Thatcher and they STILL wouldnt give it back!
