I visited Xinjiang and most of the silk road about 14 years ago, and it was not very safe, back then before it was open to tourists. But it was one of the most beautiful part of China. The food were amazing. So fresh. At that time, our tour guide was a commander of the Chinese army, and we were not allow to go on our own. We had to stay at army compounds because it was dangerous at that time. So much had change in

Well these jihadis have already fled Xinjiang and resettled in Türkiye later - mostly the same folks who fought fiercely with Syrian, Russian and Iraqi troops on Syrian soil. And the air raids by US air force personnels in Syria and Afghanistan from a few years back. Or possibly majority of these jihadis are not even China-born Uyghurs, but from neighboring Central Asia with other Turkic groups and foreign nationals as members

Yarkand is on the Southern Silk Road and can by reached by bus from Kashgar or Khotan. It is 200 km from Kashgar. Usually it takes 3 hours drive. Bus from Kashgar takes 4 hours. Bus from Hotan takes 6 hours. Daytime train now runs from Kashgar to Hotan and stops in Yarkand at least once daily.
