I cant speak for everyone on the planet but when I was 17 I was homeless and nobody I found would help me until I found Islam and a Muslim couple from Riyadh Saudi Arabia took me in from off the streets and took care of me this was in 1981 the husband was a college student and his wife was a housewife I became Muslim and have been Muslim for 43 years now. Alhamdulilah I always pray for them.I too was from an Ashkenazi Jewish background.

My recent experience with one large Masjid in the London area which is mainly for the Somalia community, unbelievable respect and brotherhood for anyone. Whenever I go there because of the type of work I do, the Somalian people are so nice and respectful, absolutely amazing.

It is said that "if you would just lovingly keep your hand on an orphan's head, you get good deeds, as many as the number of hairs on that child's head." We can adopt but we have to be careful about it, as it is a great responsibility. We have to be cautious about raising a child that's not a blood relative. As it has been exposed nowdays that young orphans are at a great risk of being adopted by sexual predators and such. Which is why we are encouraged to adopt orphans that are blood relatives. If we happen to be in a situation where we have to help a child by adoption (who's not a blood relative) And let's say it's a girl child. In that case... As she grows up, the father figure will carefully and subtly maintain his distance (which is not required if it was his blood daughter or niece). And vice versa. Our religion does not recognize automatic (or emotional) blood relative simulation due to living under the same roof. Only relatives by blood or spouse (wife's or husband's kids and parents etc) are absolutely off limits for marriage. Everyone else is fair game for marriage proposal, in a legal and appropriate manner. So that's why adoption is tricky but not completely banned. If you are rich... Or if you live in a farm setting (means you have big or multiple rooms/houses) you can adopt and maintain some decency and privacy (without making the child feel left out or unwanted). Because not just the adults... But Even your kids are not blood sister/ brother to the adopted child. And hence all these kids are just pretending to be living like brothers and sisters in the same house (in a practical sense). Unless of course you lie to them... Which is absolutely forbidden in Islam. Also forbidden is changing the last name of an adopted child (or anyone for that matter). To change somebody's lineage is considered a grave sin. Every person has a right to know their real parents and lineage. Other than that we Muslims have the best orphanages; and yet a child should never end up there if they have living grandparents and uncles and aunts. We are supposed to care for them as our own, all the while maintaining their own wealth (inheritance) as well... so we can hand it over to them when they grow up. We are highly recommended and encouraged to take care of orphans and be kind and gentle to them. There's many ways to do that. You can either take them in as "part" of your family or you can support them while they live with their own relatives. The thing that's NOT allowed in Islam, is to change their last name, their heritage and their background. Because this is seen as injustice and transgression towards them. Anyone correct me if I'm mistaken.
