This story is tragic through and through. Travis was given Xanax laced tea that morning by Sandra which likely contributed to his confusion. She’d been doing this to “keep him calm”. That day he was hit with a shovel, stabbed by his owner he and was then eventually shot by police. Both were people he trusted. So he crawled back to his cage to die, alone and confused. And then on the opposite end, you have poor Charla. Although she knew Travis well, she was in fact scared of him. There was once an incident where he’d ripped out a chunk of her hair! And yet, in spite of this she still went to help Sandra in getting him back inside only to have her face ripped off, changing her life forever. All in all the entire situation seemed to occur due to the negligence of Travis’ grief stricken “mother” which is a whole messed up story in and of itself. She projected on that poor animal, and in the end she wasn’t the one who had to pay the price.

Poor thing not every animal is meant to be domesticated if you have too give your pet Xanax to “calm it down” maybe it’s best not to keep him as a pet for attention and fame
@mati6776

@@roboguard96 Exactly! Considering the side effects of Xanax this situation was practically inevitable. Pairing a wild animal with strong human medication is absolutely a recipe for disaster.
@mati6776

@@Nnnksa50 I know right! People assume that because we can have dogs and cats that every other animal is a perfectly acceptable pet. They neglect to remember the tens of thousands of years of breeding it took to get there. And even then there are still particular skills required to be an owner of either. If Travis absolutely had to be a domestic pet, he should have been left in the hands of more qualified people that understand how to provide him the best care but also how to keep both him and those around him safe.

Something important to note is that Travis’s owner was often giving him Xanax. Xanax can cause aggression, rage, and violence in humans so you can imagine how it would affect a 240lb chimp.

It is an anti anxiety medication so doesn’t cause rage. However it is SUPER addictive as the body quickly builds up a tolerance, meaning you need more and more to achieve the same effect. You could argue that he was addicted to them & the Xan she gave him was not enough to feed his addiction so he was experiencing withdrawal and on edge as a result - leading to the anger and rage.

To be fair to the officer it makes sense that he shot him Travis had just torn a woman appart weather he was "calm" or not ment nothing he was an animal with instincts and he was on drugs it doesn't matter if he was calm in that second it only takes a minute for it to change. What happened to Travis was tragic he should never have been in that house and treated like that and he isn't to blame but I'm sure the officer was scared for his life after all this chimp he thought was safe had just ripped a woman's face off I don't blame him for doing what he did. I mean what do people want them to do handcuff him and tell him to keep calm? He'd brake the cuffs and possibly attack again he's a wild animal he doesn't know right from wrong. Rip Travis

There’s a lot more to this story. There had been a major incident where Travis escaped and it was made known that Sandra couldn’t control him. Travis used to go out with Sandra often but due to him getting older and stronger Sandra decided to have him kept inside the house for about a year or two with no opportunity to leave. The day of the attack Travis had started acting up and Sandra gave him Xanax in hopes to calm him down. Xanax is known to cause hallucinations or create aggressive behavior sometimes in humans. Add in the fact that Chimps are extremely aggressive and violent.
