Yes. 250 miles an hour on mars is like a gentle breeze on earth. The dust is the real problem. Its ionized and is fine particulate. So it sticks to everything and absolutely ruins seals on airlocks. The apollo astronaughts ran into the same problem on the moon.

This is one of the three things that the movie, The Martian, got horribly wrong. The other two were the makeshift patch in the habitat flapping about as if the air pressures inside and outside were equal (If it could have held up at all, it would have been tightly ballooned outwards due to the huge pressure differential) and growing food from gamma-irradiated meals (NASA gamma-irradiates all its astronauts' meals to preserve them, killing any vegetables and making them useless for germination). They were all things that could have easily been fixed by the writers and directors using a bit more thought and actually listening to their science advisors.

There's nothing egotistical about it. No one is saying that it has to be done *now* with our current level of technology. In fact, that's not at all what's being suggested. The research into terraforming isn't about impossible technology, either. The technology exists. The problem is scale, time and money. And while we can experiment with other worlds all we want, it's more dangerous to do so with our own while we're still here, with no exit strategy. I can image people like you 300 years in the past, thinking it would be impossible to fly or cure illnesses or go to the moon. Technology is advancing, not regressing. Look forward to what will be discovered tomorrow.

The greatest response to living on Mars I've heard is consider living on Everest. On Everest you also need to grow food indoors, you get less sun, radiation is higher due to elevation, it's frigidly cold, you need to make your own power, make your own water, etc. The only difference between living on Mars and living on Everest is that on Everest if you take off your helmet, you don't immediately die.

We're a civilization that still uses a very out dated & non practical means of traveling in outer space...that & cargo ships & successful rocket launches into space don't mix...astronauts still effected by the repercussions that come w/ being emersed 24/7 in outer space like extreme muscle loss due to weightlessness, space radiation, depression: only being in small area at minimum 9 months(earth to Mars trip)...yet get any type of start on or even a program working towards a install or remodel of our space station so it's then capable creating of its own artificial gravitation force within it's walls making it literary night & day as far as anyone onboard is concerned...lol my point is lets not be ignorant & bullshit ourselves here an put effort on things that matter & are important, want a new earth? Let put effort into upgrading our propulsion systems & attempt to bend time & space so we can travel faster then the speed of light due to being able to bend out of time while traveling...speeds that wild were bond to run into another earth like planet sooner or later 😉

Faster than light travel is not possible according to Einstein's theories which have yet to be disproven. Wait, the martian storms are relatively mild, right? The wind speed might be high, but the atmosphere is so thin compared to earth that it doesn't push enough atoms around to have a substantial impact on buildings and such. Wait....the Martian winds blow at high velocity, but they wouldn't be capable of much damage (other than coating things with dust) because the atmosphere is too thin. So, no, even though it's interesting as a plot twist in a movie, things won't be blowing away in the Martian wind like you depict at 6:00.

@@stupidas9466 Building below the surface would do exactly that. If you have alternative solutions then please feel free to offer them. Of course if you whine about carbon usage then we're going to have to go back in history 55 million years to when CO2 levels were much higher, as were global temperatures and yet life thrived during those periods. Please feel free to bring up some sensible solutions which won't result in human misery. Oh and we need to become a multi-planetary species because tomorrow all life on Earth could be destroyed by a massive asteroid impact, random high energy burst from a neutron star or a whole other list of possible things. Simply making life liveable on Earth isn't a solution to long term human survival.

@@mikoto7693 Mars probably does have caves but it would be better to dig them ourselves so we can know how thick the walls are, their stability etc. Launching some big tunnelling machines, broken down into components of course, would be the initial stages of such a project. Although it would be better if we could manufacture such things on mars. Maybe it will require an initial base which could then be used for manufacturing larger boring machines. All of this is possible if only we could get the international community together and work on the project instead of fighting one another here on Earth. I'm not exaggerating when I say we have the technology to do this. It would require a massive effort but we could absolutely colonise Mars with underground cities if every nation committed to the idea.

The nitrogen's seemingly the easy part, I think I remember a plan from the 60s that still should hold water to deploy ammonia into the atmosphere to create the needed nitrogen, the original plan was for the moon but it seemed like it should still work in this case.

I'm not thoughty2, but I can answer that for you despite not being a expert. Atmospheres aren't the only thing that makes strong winds. Solar winds reach Mars, which is what makes the dust storms. Mars doesn't have a atmosphere to protect it against solar winds.

Mars has no atmosphere because it lacks the magnetic field to keep it from being blown away by the sun wind. I think that whatever atmosphere you create on Mars, it would just be lost in space. Therefore making terraforming the red planet impossible.

Creating a magnetic field or shield for Mars, as you stated in the video, is pure science fiction. Building a "magnetic field generator" on the planet would require infrastructure and energy not available on the planet. I think we wouldn't even be able to do something similar on Earth, nevermind on another planet. And the idea of putting some kind of shield in space between Mars and the Sun is equally absurd, how would you keep its rotation synchronised with Mars on an inner orbit? Now I'm no astrophysicist, but I don't think it's possible.

It's not so much about damaging or preserving our planet... For us to guarantee our survival as a species we must become a multi-planet species because if a gamma ray burst or an asteroid where to hit our planet we would be done.. becoming a type one species on the kardashev scale would mean that we could terraform another planet but it's not just about creating an atmosphere of Mars so much as making a magnetic shield like how our planet has to protect us from cosmic radiation
