The last black 40 mm ceramic Sub 116610 LN was produced around 415,000 times, while the 116610 LV Hulk was produced around 228,000 times, or about half as often. 😮You see them much, much less often than the black one though. Could the much more frequent occurrence of a black one be an indication of the mass of fakes that exist? We know that the black Sub Date is the most counterfeited Rolex of all.

When calculating your ratios in the instance of hulks to subs you need to sum the totals then calculate the % of that derivative from the total. Hulks to sub isn’t 2:1 it’s more like 3:1 closer to your perceptive assumption of 4:1.

This authorized publication is more a coffee table photo book. The only useful information I find is the production numbers. Otherwise just go into a Rolex AD and pick up a complimentary copy of the Rolex magazine.

This book will spike demand for some early models and overall modern Subs imho. A PR game from the king of branding. Amazing the SD4K was only 27,000 models. Fairly scarce given the hundreds of thousands built of other models.

Given the SD4K is a modern steel Rolex, 27k units is actually rare. It's made in an era where Rolex already makes 1 million watches a year. There are hundreds of thousands of subs made from the same era and the 5 digit preceramic 16600 has a production number of 177k. It's not even much higher than the 1665 in which 22k units were made.

Reason Bond wore Rolex is the original book (Ian Fleming - "Casino Royale" - published in 1953) So 007 wearing Rolex was in the novel from the get-go, not a later "paid promotion" thing. (Ian Fleming himself wore a "Explorer" model)

As an example: Zenith‘s entire production in a year is 12,000 and we think a Sub is „rare“ if 22,000 were produced of a single model. That’s also pretty much the annual production of Vacheron Constantin…. Crazy world.

They're rare in the context of Rolex overall production numbers and demand. Although other brands may make fewer watches, there could be fewer demand for them.

@@oysterman962 that's a great observation. It was assessed and by the report it made it sound like junk, everything needed replacing. For a 20+ year old watch, worn daily, what would you expect. No I did not go for case refinishing, dial/handset or bezel/bezel insert. However the bracelet clasp, did need replacing, it was cracking, not something I was aware of. I am trying to keep it as original as possible, there is some pleasure in owning a watch that looks worn in. As handsome as the 124060 is, I am not certain that it is for me.

It's arguably the most notable one watch collection piece, versatile for all occasions. I own the tritium 14060 and I love it. I have over 30 watches but whenever I'm in a hurry and can't decide which watch to wear, I always grab my 14060. The weight, the size, the fit and design goes well with a suit just as it does with shorts and tshirt. Initially my grail watch was always the 116600 Sea-Dweller. However they are relatively rare and expensive so I bought a very well priced 16600 in unworn condition. A few years later I had the opportunity to purchase a pristine full set 16613 Bluesy from a doctor who received it as a Christmas present from his wife but never wore it. Still has sticker on the back. Unpolished. The purchase invoice is dated 23rd December 1997! Funny to think it was probably a last minute Christmas present purchase back in the days when you could just rock up to a Rolex AD and buy watches on the spot. Also, the papers had the doctor's address on it. I looked him up and discovered he still practices in the same New York address. Talk about provenance!

The book doesn't break down the dial variants within a reference unfortunately. So there's no way of knowing exactly how many Double Red 1665 have been made.
