@@mikesphilippineretirement Tipping culture now in the US varies very widely depending on where you are. It is not "ridiculous" everywhere. I live in Arizona which is one of many "right to work" states in the US. They don't pay well at all and of course, minimum wage is different in every state. I do agree in general about not tipping at most fast food places like drive-thru but at a standup place like a sandwich shop such as Subway, I will almost always leave a tip of $1 or $2. As for the POS places, at least in my experience, I have not seen above a 25% tip request at any restaurant I have ever been to here. However something I have found very often in the last few years, restaurants are now adding credit card "service charges of anywhere from $1 to $3. To me, that's just another way of the restaurant owners finding a way to make extra money without actually raising prices on the menus. And depending on the service, I will leave my tip to the server based on that

That is correct tipping here in the USA is ridiculous. Even self service food chains have a tip line. I used to tip for this fast food service but now I am not embarrassed or feel uncomfortable to skip tip line. My rule is to only tip for table service.

i agree when i left the states 8 months ago it was crazy. i went to a subway sandwich shop and when i put my card in it asked me for a tip. so i said u want a tip, maybe the owner should pay you more. the owner was there and gave me a strange look. i never tip anyone for making me a sandwich. its not a sit down restaruant. crazy man...and yep they try to guilt you

I agree with you. I have also pulled back on some tipping in the Philippines. I don't tip in fast food restaurants, but do in sit down and fine dining restaurants. At Ayala Mall Grocery, Cebu City, I do tip the grocery baggers for 3 reasons: (1) I know they don't make much and most support a family, (2) they bag all my family groceries, and then they take the 2 large carts of groceries and push them outside, then up a big ramp to the next floor Taxi Stand, and load up the trunk of the taxi, and (3) I used to do that for a living when I was young, so I sympathize. I tip them well, and they look for me and take care of me when I go there, and I normally avoid long lines. If I see an exceptionally hard working employee at McDonalds, I might give them a tip because I'm impressed with their work ethic. No tipping in department stores or places like that. If it's rush hour in city traffic, I might top the Taxi Drive above the rate.

Most places now hire people with no skill or education and yet demand what they call a living wage of $15 or $20 per hour. Tips used to be for the food being cheaper and the wait staff worked for only a few dollars an hour, but now they make big money and the food prices went up and they want an even bigger tip.

A tip should be 100% gratitude about how much you enjoyed your meal the surface you received etcetera... Now it's expected you almost feel guilty if you don't.. I put my foot down when I found out the lady serving me at McDonald's started at 20 bucks an hour because in California the minimum wage is $20 an hour I remember when I was a kid late 60s early 70s I was getting 85 cents an hour at McDonald's.. yeah things change times change I know that.. but I've always been a good tipper even if I really didn't have the money to do it if I was happy Camille was wonderful I got excellent service I always tip well... What if I run in the rite aid there's people out front wanting my change if I go into a grocery store Safeway or something people are out front asking for change the smoke and Marlboro cigarettes that are what 22 bucks a pack they're drinking an energy drink that's a couple bucks you don't know who to believe I'm sorry but that's the way I feel that's what has become of myself and trust in a lot of people..

This tipping with the I pad started at the Pandemic when lot of the restaurants closed and a few stayed open to do just pick up orders. I went to pick up my order at a restaurant and cashier would turn the screen around and stare at me like I am suppose to give him a tip for taking my order. They have other tricks also, at the grocery markets and fast foods, they ask you if you want to round up your change or give a donation, every time. One time I wasn't paying attention and hit the wrong button and she said thank you, oops, lol. Now I am used to it and I just ignore it. I hope the expats don't bring this bad habit to Philippines and start tipping big and next thing you know everyone expects it when they see a foreigner. I remember a few years ago I was watching a reality show on TV and this guy was in South America with his girlfriend at a restaurant and after the meal the guy was going to leave a normal tip and she got very upset with him and said you are messing things up for me and the locals who want to come this place in the future. We don't leave tips in this country, that is our culture.

I ask about tipping/mandatory tipping before sitting down. If the answer is yes then I leave. Many westerners (hire native people) are opening businesses in these countries and bring the tipping ways right along with them. Leave that mess in the west! I will eat with the locals and or cook at home before I start tipping again.

I have never seen a face light up with appreciation like I have since being here, when someone gets an unexpected tip. Yesterday, when I filled up my Nmax, as soon as the attendant was paid, he turned to walk away. "Po", I called out to him. You could tell I just made that young man's day when I handed him a 20 and said, "For you po."

I have also noticed in the Philippines, at SM malls the staff especially janitorial, doing their job extremely well. They seem to be grateful for their jobs and proud of their work. Most SM malls are cleaner than the OR's in hospitals I have worked at!

The last time I went to a restaurant the cashier pointed at my tip choices on a device and looked at me expectantly. I paid my bill and have not been back to a restaurant since. That was a year ago. Fortunately, the grocery store does not expect a tip.

I was bullied and shamed by establishments into paying tips so I stopped. In SE Asia I tip generously. At hotels I tip the maids $2 a day. They work hard. I acknowledge verbally and with tips and treats people who do things for me. I tip my dentists and Doctors. I use every person who does a service for me as an opportunity to build community. tipping is supposed to be for waitstaff based on quality of swrvice because they don't make minimum wage and that hasn't changed in 50 years. If I order online and go inside and get my order, why the heck should I have to tip anyone? It os crazy in the US. There is a lot of satisfaction in tipping someone for good service and they ate thankful vs entitlement and guilt tripping people for tips because your employer doesn't pay you a living wage, quit, get training, go to school, better yourself to get a better job in the US. Most workers in PI feel lucky to have a job and many have a college degree to work anywhere.

When I am back in the West - at fast food cafeteria type I do not tip. At a restaurant I used to tip same as HST sales tax 13%, nowadays they have no such option,: 20% or 30 % multiple choice. But if food was soggy and cold and lousy service - i dare to tell them NO

I live in California. My friend moved to Arizona. He’s back here visiting. He suggested a restaurant he hadn’t been to. I checked the menu online and saw that they add a 4% service charge to all bills. I asked if this is going on in Arizona. He did not know about it. There’s a place called John and Vinny‘s that adds an 18% service charge. The menu specifically says this is not a tip or gratuity, it goes to the restaurant to help pay higher wages to all employees. I will not go there. Any extra fees that a restaurant adds, in my view, are part of the tip, so I will reduce the tip accordingly. And with restaurant servers getting paid $20 an hour or more plus health insurance and sick days, I don’t think that there should be tipping anymore. We customers are paying for them to be compensated as if they’re working in an office. We went to an Italian restaurant that does not have any of these fees. I had a chopped antipasto salad. They didn’t toss the salami and pepperoni with the salad, they sliced it and put it on top afterward, so I asked the waiter for a little more dressing. When the bill came, there was a $.50 for the extra dressing. I asked the manager to remove the charge. I told the manager if they charge, they need to tell you that when you ask for the item. Also, it was stuffy inside the restaurant as if they didn’t have the air conditioning on. These places are trying to save money anyway they can. It wasn’t pleasant and I will not go there again. I went to this restaurant frequently in the 1990s, and I used to pick up delicious pizzas there until recently. The last one was a bit skimpy and I haven’t been back.

In restaurants, I look if they're adding a service charge. If not, then I found up the bill. For Grab drivers I usually tip ₱25. I once had a ₱2200 Grab ride late at night for an emergency out in the province, and I tipped him ₱250.

Yeah i make a lot of money in my own opinion, 150k US a year roughly. I rarely eat out because of this. Those electronic machines usually start at 18% then move to 20, then 25% then a custom button. It's crazy. When you consider the insane inflation on the menu, usually coupled with a smaller portion, they higher tip percentage is actually a much higher dollar amount than you'd even consider if you factor in that it's a percentage of the post COVID inflation prices. And it is on many businesses, where the employee already makes a good hourly wage and it is on s guilting manner. The employees do at times play a part in this. It really makes me never want to go out and do anything, which I'm ok with. I don't like wasting my hard earned dollars.

I live in Makati and employees at some bars have said they don’t always see the service charge. I always tip well and at many places I get 20% senior citizens discount and pass that on in cash to waiter, waitresses or bartenders

I am hoping the US stops the practice of tipping and just pay employees more. In the Philippines I agree being generous and wanting to reward good service is not a problem. I even keep change in my pocket for those elderly sitting on the curbs. I know a good percentage of the population does not qualify for the meager old age pension because there is no proof they ever had wages.

Hi Mike, I enjoyed your video, but one thing I did not hear you say was what the acronym tip stands for… TIP = “To Insure Proper Service” if someone ever asked me for a tip before service is provided I asked them if you can give me three reasons in 20 seconds then maybe I will consider it otherwise you have done nothing for me except take my credit card and ask for money … then I proceeded to tell them what tip stands for. To ensure proper service.😊 then I tell them your employer is paying you. and if after I receive your service, and I think you deserve it, then I will give it to you if you do not ask. I do not give tips for people who ask for tips.

The Philippines seems like stepping back to the time of Mayberry RFD when the waitress really appreciates it. Now that salaries have become living wages, the USA needs to eliminate the practice. Most tourists to the USA, tipping is their fear and nightmare part of coming to America.

Inflation in the US has caused the prices to increase, mainly because increased minimum wage. There should be an end to tipping. I tip 50 php pesos most of the time here, but look at the recipe many of the restaurants here in Dumaguete charge a service fee.

Tipping should be completely voluntary for services above normal. NOT compulsory! The entire purpose of tipping in the U.S. has gotten completely distorted. 😡 Just today my Wife and I treated ourselves to a mani-pedi spa day. The prices for services are clearly marked. But because of extra effort the lady who worked on me had to go through, the extra care to give me the best possible service, I was happy to give her a healthy tip! After all, it took her longer to accomplish the service, and she could have been already working on another customer. I don't tip fast food. But if I'm at a restaurant, and get top service, I don't hesitate to leave something for my server. But this is voluntary.

Any foreigners coming over to the philippines here just as a rule 10% is the top tip. Was amazing when i first got here we went out in eight and i took the whole family and i got a pretty healthy meal and i went ahead and tip like 20% boy was my fiance mad! She tried taken some of it back and i don't know she argue with me for 3 days about it. How about her pay all the bills now i don't want to do none of that crap. Her reasoning was he said the honor is of indian with a lot of money so what i said yeah but the employee doesn't have it. Anyway don't argue too much with the ladies here you know.

In the USA carry cash for use in any place that you suspect wants tips up front. Then, you don't have to suffer that awkward moment of putting in a pre-determined tip (e.g. 20, 25, etc. %).

I tip for service.. not for employees doing their job. In the Philippines I always tip all the delivery people nicely. In the US you get someone spitting in your food if you are a poor tipper.

I've seen a lot of POS terminals at airport sandwich kiosks. I picked my own sandwich and drink from the shelf. No service, just a cashier asking me to make a tip selection on the terminal. It's really gotten out of hand there. I have no trouble selecting ZERO tip for those setups.

I don’t tip fast food but in Philippines I’d be more inclined to tip a bit because I know that wages are lower than other places In my province the minimum wage is $17.40 as of today. Not that it’s a huge amount and I don’t tip based on wage but wages are higher here

I don't do that tipping everything stuff I have no shame when they turn around with that iPad and it's asking for a tip hitting no, if it's not in what you would consider a normal tipping place like a restaurant or something like that. I never did join in on that tip, everybody crap I never started it. I never do it, and I don't feel bad about it about it.

It seems to me that the business owners, big and small use tipping as a means to avoid paying their employees more money. Like most social issues, creating laws about it will definately do more harm than good. That being said, I generally tip pretty well but due to the out of control tipping culture, I actually eat out a lot less than I would otherwise.

About a year ago, I noticed that my resturant bill was higher than want I was expecting. I found that some resturants, mostly in tourist areas, are charging a 10% service charge. I don't like it. I usually tip for good service or atleast round up. I can understand a service charge for large groups, but this has been when it is just my gf and I. I island hop a lot and have found this going on in different locations. Anyone else noticed this?

Yes! I have noticed it for the past 3 years. Check your receipts for VAT tax too😒. I keep and study my receipts from wherever I go. More taxes and fees has slowly been added on my receipts throughout the years. I no longer go to a handful of establishments. They are doing what the west is doing and will eventually lose customers and go out business due to greed, like the companies in the west.

Young people who are growing up with these tip screens won’t know the difference. They will think it’s normal to tip every time you pay for anything. Another example of not knowing what’s proper is traffic. I was listening to Christian radio one morning. One talk show host said traffic is so bad, it is even bumper-to-bumper on the freeway on-ramps, so you can’t get up to speed anymore. The younger host said you’re not supposed to speed up on the on-ramp! She actually said, “The on-ramp is just to get you TO the freeway.” She’s never seen any different! I distinctly remember the drivers handbook saying you are supposed to enter the freeway “at or near the speed of traffic“.

In the US where I'm at right now... I only tip that sit down restaurants When I went to the Philippines... The girl brought me my bill I gave her a thousand pesos and I walked out to my scooter and she told me sir you forgot your change... It was like 150 pesos... And I told her that was for her She was very happy... A lot of Filipino restaurants are very surprised when you leave them a tip... I tip in my own country so I tip in other countries They make very little money in the Philippines ... And I know two or three dollars really helps them 😄 😄

Tipping is out of control in America. I was just at Jersey Mikes for a to go sub. The line was 15 people long and didn't move for 25 minutes because they prioritize Uber and door dash orders over in store orders. No one is tipping on those orders so why the priority? Service and quality are disappointing everywhere so if it's not well done, in a timely fashion, then I limit my tips to true tipping establishments. Companies need to pay their employees and price their food accordingly, if they aren't a viable company after that, they can join the long list of companies that had to close.

I leave 20% almost always. Sometimes 25% I used to be a bartender and understand they basically don’t make minimum wage cause those jobs aren’t qualified for the national minimum wage so they depend on a fair tip. When I was a UPS driver we were paid very well but every Christmas we got nice tips from our customers especially doctors offices. All my businesses had my cell. I’d accommodate them if they had an emergency and needed a package sooner than normal time. They would reward me at Christmas time

I get if there is a large group, tip more. But why must I tip more because they carried over a steak instead of a hamburger? Makes zero sense. Where I grew up, you didn't tip according to the price of the meal. You tipped 2 to 3 dollars, and if your're feeling really generous 5 dollars.

I tip for outstanding service. If a restaurant has the hidden service charge, I'll never go back to their business. It's strange how we tip ordinary people 15%-20%, but here in the Philippines, they are all just getting by. We should tip more often. I tried to tip a McDonald's employee and he said it wasn't necessary, even after going above and beyond normal service. I agree with Mike, on tipping guidelines for the Philippines. I always get a 100 peso haircut and tip the person 50 or 100 peso. The Starbucks in Davao at Abrezza Mall wants 170 peso for cup of hot chocolate with no free WiFi in store. Big mistake on my part, never going back there. Many people are going there because it's about status more than good value.

If you are standing up or in your car when you order no tip is necessary. If your sitting and your food and drink are delivered to your table then tipping is normal. Pre-covid I tipped 10% now I tip 15-20% tip

Recently Mississippi hotel takeout restaurant had no option for custom or no tip - just 15, 20, 25%. Taco place in Nashville makes you answer the on screen tip question when paying cash. CoreLife counter service restaurant in Nashville has press “F” for no tip (which suggests you are screwing them over). I always hit custom and do only a dollar if it is casual service (fast food - zero), if the bill is $30 - then maybe $2. Ridiculous anyways, but some places can’t find people willing to work.

At NAIA a few weeks ago, tipped the bag grabber 70php for carrying my 7kg bag 3 metres to the taxi trunk. He looks at me and says "only 70 peso you are a rich foreigner". We get in the taxi and discover the fair will be 2500php for what Google says is a 10-minute journey. We immediately got out of the taxi and booked a grab which was 300 peso, I tip the driver 200 peso he was very happy. On my previous trips to the Philippines are usually used Grab it's always much better than the rip off taxi. I don't know why I got in the taxi this time, but never again.

See it creates an expectation, always grab, and 25-50 pesos grab tip is more than enough man no need to do 60 percent tips. As for the bag guy i would never tip more than 25 pesos again. Basically you tipped him a little over a dollar, if he did that 8 times a day, he would make what a nurse makes in the Philiphines working 50-60 hours a week.

Little heads up on transfer bus to Terminal 3 out of Manila. There's a lady at stop 18 where you catch the free shuttle, telling people it takes 45 minutes to wait and catch the bus. She has taxi, can do faster. Typical scam people in operation at Manila. You catch transfer bus at T-2, its free and goes to T-4, T-3, T-1 & back to T-2

Even my barber shop wanted a tip if you use a credit card and haircut cost $25. It is ridiculous. At restaurants I like to leave my tip on table. Nowadays they do not want you to do that and tip when they collect your money for the meal. I am old fashioned. I believe the money should go to the waitress and not the establishment. Some waitresses even pool their money to all the waitresses. I like for my money to go to the waitress that served me if I leave a tip. Things are different. I believe the customary tip is 15% of the meal. I would leave $2 unless I have extra cash with me or change.
