Her Remarkable History

On the 16th October 1793, the former Queen of France Marie Antoinette was taken to the scaffold inside of the Place de la Revolution in Paris. She had been condemned to death during the Terror and following the French Revolution and she was charged with a huge number of crimes including shockingly incest, treason and waging war against the French nation. The Austrian Princess was considered a terrible traitor against the French people and she was said to have been someone who out of touch with what the people needed. Marie Antoinette did not have to be killed for the French revolutionaries to achieve their goals, but they ruthlessly put her to death sending her to the same execution device and guillotine that her husband died upon. But Marie Antoinette’s final words were remarkable and they were something completely accidental, however inside of a museum is an incredible artefact linked to this moment and the Queen’s final words, and these are the shoes that the Queen wore to her execution that very day.

It's disgusting and barbaric what the revolutionaries did to Marie, her loved ones, and countless others. They were absolute monsters.

She was taken to her execution in an open cart so that to that the people could throw things at her. That monster Robespierre who had signed so many execution orders including those of Carmelite nuns was guillotined himself in the end.

Imagine you have to get dressed in the last outfit that you will ever put on for yourself, and you have to do so in a hurry with people watching. You don't get to choose what you're wearing either- someone else has already decided and they dislike you immensely. The stress of that I can't imagine and I don't really want to.

People do that all the time. They are the young, the incarcerated, in hospitals, boarding schools, and performers.

They wanted her dead, and nothing was going ti change that. She was a victim of the times. Maybe not totally innocent, she didnt deserve the guillotine and the humiliation she suffered up until her death. She was more stoic snd graceful in the face of death than most otheres would be. Very sad. And this played out for thousands of others. The guillotine was the great equalizer.

There's something so haunting about seeing the shoes she died in. Can't imagine if I were guillotined and then my air force 1s were preserved for all to see

It is not correct that Marie Antoinette had a rope around her neck. Her hands were, however, tied behind her back. What is true is that she was driven to her death in a cart -- not in a carriage, as was the case for Louis XVI. A cart was used to move food, clothing, fuel, etc., but it was *not* used to transport people of quality, much less a queen. When Marie Antoinette saw the cart, she was so startled that she soiled herself. She was allowed to change into a final white dress. Last point: People often blame Marie Antoinette for France's budgetary woes, when in fact it was France's support of American Revolutionaries which cratered the French economy.

She wasn’t in charge of the Treasury. C’mon. That job was a man’s.

She wasn't alone. The constant wars abroad (which included America) were the real depletion of the treasury. But hey, lets blame the bitch.

Sorry, but quite a lot of this is incorrect. There is no evidence she was given a specific dress to wear or given a specific pair of shoes to wear. You claim that she was forced to wear a white dress "because she was a widowed queen of France," yet she was told she *couldn't* wear her mourning dress by the revolutionary government. The idea that French queens "wore white" is an inflation of white veils that some queens of France wore when they were widowed; these women still wore, primarily, black clothing. White could be incorporated into mourning but it was not traditional for French queens to wear solid white as a standard for mourning. If it had been, Marie Antoinette would have asked for white mourning clothes after Louis XVI's death, not black. Rosalie Lamorliere would later recount that the queen was told she couldn't wear her mourning clothes due to fear that her widow's dress would provoke the people to insult her, but that those at the prison privately thought it was because the mourning clothes would make people feel sympathetic. The white dress, if we believe Rosalie Lamorliere, was something Marie Antoinette had kept among the clothes sent to her from the Temple. Same with the shoes, which Marie Antoinette had been wearing since she was tranferred to the Conciergerie, shoes she had requested back at the Temple. The "shoe she wore to her execution" has incredibly shaky provenance in terms of its history. It's only evidence is a slip inside the shoe which just... proclaims that it's the shoe she wore to her execution and gives a story that contrasts against known facts. The slip claims that she lost the shoe walking to the scaffold, and that a man immediately grabbed the shoe, then sold it to a specific man. But that specific man was not in France in 1793 and furthermore, we know that her execution was guarded by rows of guards, and closely watched. A guard at the Conciergerie was arrested for helping her down a staircase, but we're to believe that a man somehow barrelled past the guards, grabbed her shoe, and absolutely zero witnesses to her execution saw this or wrote about it in the accounts that came out afterwards? Aside from, as I said, the man who the slip claims bought the shoe wasn't even in France at the time. She didn't have a rope tied around her neck. She had her hands tied behind her back, which was held by the executioner.
