Mini FAQ Answered: 1. The 1st song to play is "America" by The Shoes. 2. This is not a trailer for an upcoming film. It's just a well-produced music video starring the extremely talented Jake Gyllenhaal. 3. The phrase "time to dance" can be interpreted literally as a command to dance or figuratively such as "time to fight/kill." Both examples are shown throughout the music video and both involve being present, feeling emotion, and knowing and understanding your body and its movements. 4. Why does Jake kill the White dancers in the beginning but not the Black dancers at the end? Throughout the video, Jake is searching for feeling, for emotion. He's numbed by drugs and alcohol. The dancers at the beginning are not feeling anything as well, wriggling their bodies off beat b/c they are not paying attention to the music. He kills them in an effort to regain feelings he has lost. He kills more "hipsters" to regain feelings to no avail. He even shaves his beard during the cold season to feel the harsher climate. It isn't until the Black dancers at the end show him a path back to those feelings. They're present. They dance to the beat. They feel. He pounds his fist in understanding and enjoyment. Hope this helps. Cheers!

This is what I understand from the video: He has so much anger. He tries to get rid of it by killing people randomly although it never actually helps. But finally he sees the dancers, how they are into it and able to show their anger. Finally he starts to dance. Because its now time to dance. After he dances, the snowy scene comes (you feel pureness and relief) and you see his relaxed face. He is now free like birds. (last scene)
@varkx3282 Жыл бұрын
I think you are right about the end point but not about the beginning. I think he kills because he has a huge hatred for people at parties who dance just "to do like the others" and his anti-social anxiety prevents him from understanding this behavior. So, failing to understand them, he kills them. At the end, he sees dancers who dance not to conform socially, but to release their rages, their hatreds, their angers. Then, he understands why they are dancing and it's his turn to dance to free himself.

I think for this music vid. The meaning of Jake where he is looking for something real, where the other hipsters yet for him is uninteresting because of their lack of passion in the so called party, hence the killing of them. Where the ending he approached the two real dancers who are enjoying the music, which made him to feel and also to begin to dance. Dunno, my suggestion. sorry for bad english.
@chasetheidea10 жыл бұрын
I like your explanation. In my opinion, he was trying to fill his feelings of inevitable anger. He tried various fitness exercises, he tried medicine and drugs but killing people more specifically hipsters because of their pretentious lifestyle was the closest to satisfying that want. In the end, he watched two passionate dancers and when he danced, he realized that it felt good that it was filling that void of anger, it was the solution..

Sidney Leung Good interpenetration. What I'm getting from the video is that Jake is sick and tired of people being selfish. Everyone in this video is dancing with a girl or looking at a girl in hopes to hook up. The guy in the beginning is doing molly(mdma) with the girl. And as the night progresses, they're all over each other. Once Jake slices her throat, the man just dashes off for his own safety. The next montage is Jake trying to improve himself. Get into a better shape. I think there's mild connection with the baby signifying purity. Then it's just him being alone, and during his shave, he gets an idea to go on a rampage to kill the pretentious - hipsters. This is where he goes on a hunt to clubs and parties. He is still in the mindset that his loneliness is a result of others being fake. During the restaurant scene, he realizes that nothing is changing. He is still alone. That's when he goes to a club and sees the two people dancing. They are full of internal energy and they are not affected by the external world. This is where Jake breaks his own barriers and humbly starts to move to music.The last scene though is where I'm a bit puzzled. He is still alone, yet it's hard to tell whether he feels better because he stopped giving a sh*t. Or is he the same and him dancing didn't have any effect.

@ErjonMalaj8 жыл бұрын
so no one on here gets the point of this video huh? To me, it symbolizes the dramatic role music and dance can have in people's lives, to escape, to relieve stress, and cope with hardships. Serial killers clearly have something wrong in them, so in this video, Jake is seen killing a bunch of people throughout, up until he watches 2 people dance their f**king brains out. The way he looks at them from 6:36 on, and particularly at 7:06, shows that he relates to their erratic expressions of anger, passion, power, etc. and craves a similar avenue of release, so he starts moving to the music and pumping his fist on the wall (like a stabbing motion!) as an alternative to going out and killing more. Having discovered this, he's shown as much more peaceful and tranquil for the rest of the video. Music as a form of stress relief and meditation is definitely something i personally relate to, and I think thats what the message is here

EvitalovesThings Haha thanks, but I watched the movie too! did you see any question mark in my comment? :) And the drawings werent because of the necklace but because he enjoyed the idea of a maze, being lost in eternity. IF you really liked the film you should watch the extra content they made. Jake Gyllenhall didnt have much to say but the director explained a lot, specially why he approached the direction in the way I said, without really knowing whats going on the entire movie.

In loving memory of the 47 hipsters murdered in this film.
Never before noticed how good of an actor Gyllenhaal is until I saw this.

2 months late but you should check out Enemy, Prisoners and the best one Nightcrawler. All of them are movies that feature Gyllenhaal.

This looks like those moments in movies where the main character goes on a journey of self-discovery, so they edit a bunch of smaller clips of them doing different things. This is amazing. Loved the clip and the song. I could see this as part of a bigger movie.
