"I want to go out in the world again and see the trees and the lakes and the hills and the sky." Fun Fact: John Wayne did not want to grow a beard in order to play J.B. Books. However, he soon agreed it looked right for the character. Casting Notes Fact: John Wayne liked working with Lauren Bacall in their first film, Blood Alley (1955) so much that he hand-picked her as his leading lady for this film. James Stewart had not made a film for five years, but he agreed to play the doctor as a favor to John Wayne. Passing The Torch Fact: An interviewer asked Ron Howard if John Wayne had given him any tips on acting. He said that, during the filming of the final shootout, Wayne took him aside and said he had some advice for him. As Howard eagerly awaited some profound advice, Wayne said: "Ron, if you want to look menacing - close your mouth." The Duke Fact: To add a sense of realism to John Wayne's character, archive footage from several of his westerns was used to introduce J.B. Books after the beginning credits. Included was footage from Red River (1948), Hondo (1953), Rio Bravo (1959), and El Dorado (1966). John Wayne was great to the Carson City locals while he was staying at the Ormsby House Hotel during the filming. He signed autographs for young people readily, including one signed for future famed Nevada Opera lead mezzo soprano Mary Anna Replogle. Final Bow Fact: Final film of John Wayne. Contrary to popular belief, John Wayne did not have cancer when he made this film. His entire left lung and several ribs had been removed in surgery on September 17, 1964, and in 1969 he was declared cancer-free. It was not until January 12, 1979, almost three years after this movie had been filmed, that the disease was found to have returned. According to the biography John Wayne: The Life And Legend (2014) by Scott Eyman, Wayne had been found to have stomach cancer in 1975 but it had gone into remission before filming began on this movie.

That old Gunslinger was Richard Boone. John Carradine is in this movie, the guy with the Top Hat (maybe the Undertaker) he played in Stagecoach (1939) with John Wayne, considered to the the first "Great Western". He has 353 credits (LOL) he was the Owl's voice in the *Secret of NIMH*.

Moses, the "The Shining" guy horse groomer, is Scatman Crothers. He was a singer, musician, voice actor and a very beloved character actor. The nasty, gnarly Mike Sweeney is Richard Boone who starred as the good guy in his own western TV series "Have Gun, Will Travel," and the sharpshooting faro dealer Jack Pulford is Hugh O'Brian who also starred in his own western series "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp." The pretty young woman that Books talks to on the trolley on his last day is Melody Thomas Scott who was (and still is) a popular daytime soap opera star on the series "The Young And The Restless."

When you talked about how men would be dressed up, it made me think of the 1945 technicolor western "San Antonio" starring Errol Flynn and Alexis Smith and how dapper Errol Flynn looked and how glamorous Alexis Smith looked in the scene when she sang the Academy Award winning song "Some Sunday Morning." The film was Flynn's most popular movie of the mid 1940s, so you might consider giving it a watch.

You should react to John Wayne's The Cowboys 1972. FYI about 50%of the actors on the Shootest died from cancer. Including scatman brothers, Richard Boone, and the fried of Ron Howard. Cobb. John Carridine was the crooked undertaker ✌🏽❤️
