In this video, I revisit the wonderful street, The Shambles in York, England, the street that RK Rowling used as part of her inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter Books and Movies. The street was constructed in the late 1300s and many of the shops that opened at this time remain to this day, including The York Ghost Merchants and the Potions and Caldron Shops. This Shot is of 'The Shop The Must Not be Named' No 30 The Shambles, however this shop is a more modern addition, paying homage to the Harry Potter Books and Movies, but if you wish to pick up a Wand, a Robe, or a Broom feel free to visit :-)
The aim of the tutorial is to show the technique I use for dealing with high-contrast scenes, specifically where we have bright artificial lights in a darker location, so we will complete an HDR to extend the dynamic range and we will also complete a sky replacement to remove the very blue sky that was present at 03:20am :-)
If you would like to follow along here is the link to down load the RAW files :- drive.google.com/drive/folder... All I request is that you please respect my copyright and therefore if you use the images on social media or publish them, you please give credit to myself @jamiermathlin

Wonderful wonderful! I love watching your process. I have a question. If I am making a composite and I want to place objects or people into it, should I do that before the day to night process or wait until after? I would imagine before for several reasons but I wanted your input on it. Thank you again.

Yes, for sure do it before you relight the scene, that way the lighting effects you apply, will also be rendered on to the added objects/people...

Another amazing shot Jamie, just love the detail in the buildings, can I just ask to be careful when using the brush to let know where you are placing it, your wonderful dark and moody shots make it difficult to see where you’re working, or is it just me, I am getting older! Anyway love your work, Mike

Thanks Mike, I think we are all getting older 😀 do you have your monitor brightness set to maximum ? I must admit I do tend to work om a bright monitor myself. Perhaps try watching in a darkened room, bright room lights can sometimes make it difficult to see a computer screen 👍

Are you using a desktop machine or MacBook pro. I find trying to use both the regenerative fill and such like my 2016 MacBook Pros fan kicks in, but being as I about to upgrade my camera to a Cannon R10 with obviously a few lenses to suit i can’t afford a new laptop at the moment but will soon I think, I’d rather have new one than an intel version one obviously, but one thing at a time

Hi Simon, I use either my Mac Studio or my MacBook pro 16", both have Apple Silicon, so gone are the days of full-speed fans and 1 hour batteries. My Studio has 64Gb of RAM and my Macbook has 32Gb RAM, both are more than capable, in fact I am able to render a 4k video in the background and still be using Lightroom and Photoshop without any concerns. I have heard good things about the R10, one of the better APS-C cameras ! 😀
