The shortest haircut we’ve ever done

This was a hard day for us. (5 years ago btw) I understand the sentiment of a lot of people here but I want to share context because you really never know what others are going through. Abbie had long hair to the middle of her back but she had started chewing and ingesting her hair. We had it cut into a bob to fix that. The problem with the bob is that we could never keep it out of her face for very long so she would always have her whole face covered by her hair. We had to make a quality of life decision for her. We wanted to cry that day cutting her hair so short. I hated that her hair style was dictated by her disability. Fortunately she doesn’t chew her hair anymore and she is back to long hair again.

Thanks for sharing. And she is looking up at the lights because she can hear it. My daughter does the same thing. She turns lights and ceiling fans off because she can hear it or the noise from the electrical circuit. It has a humming sound if you get near it and listen.

I don't think she was mad about the results I think she was just not used to seeing herself with that look but in my opinion it looked like she had a bit of a twinkle in her eye the entire time and I really think she enjoyed the whole Salon experience. Even if it isn't her favorite look, it's awesome she is trying something new. Hair grows, so no harm done.

I recently got my hair cut very short because of sensory issues. Maybe just a little longer than her’s. It helped me. If it was cut that short for sensory issues, I totally understand and I hope it helped a ton!

She doesn't necessarily hate it. Getting your hair cut can be a very overestimating experience for someone with autism. We can't tell from this video why the cut was done or how Abbie feels. I think she's probably overstimulated in this video vs not liking her haircut. She may not, and maybe it was done for the parents, but we can't possibly tell from this one video, so it's best not to assume the worst of these parents who obviously care about their daughter.

I have very curly wild hair and my mom had no idea what to do with it so she kept cutting it shorter and shorter and she would also cut the big bangs people had in the 90s. On top of all that she would brush the curls out so it was a big ball of frizz. I absolutely hated it and all the kids used to call me mushroom head. I’ve had very VERY long hair every since! 😂😂😂

Part of her discomfort may come from the normalcy of her longer hair covering her face, it may be more of a sensory comfort or even ability to block things out by using her hair as a shield. Keep complimenting her and building up her confidence. New hair cuts are an adjustment for anyone!

I worked with adults who have autism. It's hard when they can't talk what to do, but yes, u really have to use face cues, and it's a learning process. Hair grows back. But yes, it looked like she didn't like the result.

I can totally relate!! Shouldn’t cut girls hair short unless they are asking for it. It really destroys your self esteem. My mom used to cut my hair short and my bangs and since my hair is curly and she didn’t know how to care for it she was also brushing it dry and frizzy. I HATED IT! Whether the "stylist" was nice or had patience is no excuse for this terribly horrible awful job she did! She butchered her hair making her look like a boy, and having no style to it whatsoever! Just because they asked for short, doesn't mean one should just go and butcher their hair.🥺 At the very least she could have given her a SHORT BUT CUTE STYLISH BOB CUT, instead of this disastrous awful mess! Poor Abby! She's SMART, and she knows when she sees a bad haircut. I’m new to watching your videos… so just wondering; have you ever thought about buying Abbie a Speech Tablet? I recently watched a documentary about a young man who was non verbal. He and his father co-authored a book about his autism and his frustrations toward his inability to speak or display his feelings. Due to his autism his parents didn’t think he was able to explain his thoughts or communicate until they used this type of tablet. If spelling is an issue the tablet has pictures they can use. They are expensive ($500+) but absolutely worth it.

And you decided to try out the short pixie cut cos her chewing on her hair was more of an issue back then.
