Interesting catches you got there; kind of funny how them small railroads still operate to this day just carrying one to two cargoes.

It definitely shows what can be if railroads don't have a business model with an emphasis on the operating ratio. Lots of freight loads can be profitable for a railroad, but most of the big ones have a business model that only focus on the ones with the biggest profit for the least cost, which usually is heavy bulk commodities like coal and oil, as well as intermodal containers at the expense of everything else. That's where these short lines can come in and do a lot of good.

Funny in puerto rico we had a extreme small railway just for the port in the south. It was used for shunting chemical tank out of a boat for truck to deliver. It closed in 2010

Neat video, though I would change the title to "The Shortline Railroads of Boston" as there are more shortlines around Mass.

That NHN Geep seemed to have a very fast bell clapper, sounded more like a fire engine bell than a locomotive one

Kinda thought this was going to cover at least a decent selection if not all of Massachusett's shortlines, rather than just these two. All the same, cool to see them in operation. Living more at the western end of the state, I rarely have chances to see any of the operations in the eastern part of the state.

7:36 Ballardvale was planned to be double tracked, but it never came to be. A stimulus from the Obama administration was going to pay to double track it, but redoing the station did not fit into the budget. So they ran the track as far as they could on either side. Now it's used for mounting hirails and equipment storage on occasion.

Owned by Masdot, I believe. It's needed. Quirk should have his stuff shipped by rail there. It would be cheaper.

That's crazy that these still opperate. Here is Davis, CA, Northern California Railroad operates a tiny rail line, along with two other even tinier operators, over a Y-shaped track layout that totals maybe 15 miles. Two or three trains per day haul agricultural and other products typical of rural communities on anchient tracks owned by Union Pacific. Train whistles remind us we live in a western town that originated entirely because it was a main rail depot on the UP rail lines in Northern and Central California.
