Hijacking top comment: a lot of people are ignoring that they told us the contest system changed. Most of the contest is calculated at the start of the shot. So if they start the shot before you contest it, and they time it right, it's going in. You gotta get your hand up sooner. Interior contest controls changed too. Stick up isn't the best contest compared to pulling the stick away from player

You put your hand up after the shot gather starts you contested too late. You run at someone and get close, you move faster than compared to heading towards them with hand up. They explained the new contest system before launch on 2k report.

I think some of the "Open" shots still have a small %, but the game doesn't show it. Cause there's no way you contest someone to the point where they bump and fall and it's still open.

no shot contests a lot more realistic. at higher levels of basketball being close isnt enough to make them miss especially at the college level so imagine the nba. u gotta have a hand in their face and change their shot to make them miss

@@lazhiey my brother if I jump at a shooter then i should at least have some type of contest and it shouldn’t be open. if it’s heavily contested and they green it ok that’s just a better shot but that shit shouldn’t be open. Most nba players are trained to shoot contested but defense still plays a part and in the end if they make it that’s just better offense that’s how basketball is. but it’s all the time and centers and guards are open and not even lightly contested

the hands up contest animations are horrendous. it was the same in 2k24 but contest were stronger in general so ppl didnt notice as much. the game will give you contest animations from a distance where youre not actually getting a contest if you run up with your hands up. you run up first before putting the hands up in order to avoid the bad animations. a ton of these animations also significantly slow down the player when they otherwise couldve easily gotten a good contest. i have absolutely no idea why this is even in the game. also idk if anyone else has noticed this but i will very often get the "good shot contest" feedback on shots that were actually open and that just makes me think that these systems are not working as intended at all.

Laker I’ve been playing on a 6’10-6’11 stretch big the whole time so far and from what I’ve noticed from trying to shoot and over people an unhealthy amount, the contest system has more to do with being positionally close to a player + height difference when you go up more than anything, hands up or not. The reason you’re getting better contests is because your player is getting under the shooter’s feet better just sprinting with your hands down. If you are not there when the player begins his shot motion it won’t get significantly more contested even if you close out, hence why just running with your hands down gets you closer BEFORE THEY GO up gets you better results

Contesting is to obscure the shooter’s vision during their shot. Or alter their form/ follow thru (even scare em). To trick a person’s depth perception (hand eye coordination) and/ or make em lose focus during. As a decent shooter irl, I’m only worried about a few things. My base, space (both to get shot off and landing), and actual jumping contest. So technically, those are open shots but it’s player dependent.

Being in someone face should be tight because that is a real way to contest without fouling. The problem is that coverage being tied to perimeter and interior stats . You can get the same animation one will be lightly, one will be open, one will be wide open. But block rating gives you better contest animations but not better coverage reading.

Hands up defense in the paint and on the perimeter is sketchy this year. I’m a center, if I have hands up in the paint it’s like I’m not even standing there. I’m shooting clean over centers from the 3pt line even if they are holding hands up or jumping.

I actually can 100% confirm reaching this year gives you better contest then putting hands up or jumping. Every time I reach while someone slashes, I either strip ball or get a good animation where I strip ball. Kinda crazy you can also do that on perimeter once you see a guy shoot, just reach and better contest will happen

you'll get a good contest as long as you're standing there when the shooter starts his jump, i noticed it once but never thought to just try running directly at the shooter without putting my hands up. putting your hand up actually slows you down when attempting to contest so just running and crowding the shooter is probably why it works.

Maybe that's part of 2K25 leaning to be more "realistic". Like when someone is hounding you even before you make the shot, the shooting motion will be unnatural hence most of the times missing. On the other side, when somebody puts a hand up only or even jumps on a late contest, natural shooting motion is still there and most times you won't feel bothered taking the shot

The contest system is based on the proximity of your defense at the start of their shot and its boosted based on your perimeter defense attribute. That said, there's a lot of inconsistencies on defense, especially in the paint.

No matter what people are going to exploit the game. I love what proplay has done for 2k. If they just tweak contests a little and shooting a little i think it makes it manageable. What i don't want is to feel helpless because people can let right you to death, cheese the game and make only a few builds viable. The more balance the better.

they need to find a balance between gather and release. shouldn’t get a tight just by running by early, but we also don’t need ghost contests to return just because someone ran by me as I’m releasing the ball

It’s horrible !! Go back to last year, if your hand is there, it’s contested ! If not, it’s open ! Interior contest is even worse. These guards are throwing up anything and even if you do get a red it’s still likely to go in smh. Hand up in the paint doesn’t even trigger consistently, some times it’ll put my hands down while I’m still holding up

For me at about 150 games played of lock the contest has only been bad off step backs, you’re pretty much guaranteed to get no contest on even a half decent step back

Everyone complaining about shooting and dribbling when the shot contest is the worst thing on the game. People with real % lay up can just force shots on you and like you said hands up defense is invisible on shooters sometimes.

If you hit triangle, you activate badges for the other player while shooting also if another teammate randomly hit square that also activates the badges for the team and it helps the shot go in.

Ahh I see what you getting at because the game is probably program for badges to kick in on shot contest. Basically jumps and hands up but the badges don’t work because the player is just crowding you instead

Bro they need to patch so many things. The matchmaking is broken, the contest system is broken, the dunk meter sometimes doesn't make any sense. The steals of a rebound are absolutely unfair. I like this game but goddamn i think i've never seen a more broken 2K game at launch than this one.

2k25 would instantly go from a bad game to a good game with very few changes that every single person wants -open/wide open layups should pretty much never miss -layup meter should be superior to real player % -meters should show your green window -shooting shouldn’t change green windows and you should be able to consistently green -contest system should be fixed

most people run low income (low risk) on their jumpshot that why the contest is like that. its not glitched, 2k just made it where high risk is strictly green window so contest doesnt affect as much cause if you miss time it you gonna just miss anyway.

I think the shot contest system good so far to be honest. This video shows an issue with it but overall I like it. Hands up defense doesn’t affect players in the NBA unless there’s a significant height difference. I used to be able to contest 6’9 builds with nothing but hands up on my 6’1 guard simply because I had HOF challenger. That shouldn’t happen.

The ball handler doesn't even really have to be good this year they just have to be really fast and they could easily get by a top defender. And then when I do put my hands up I'm writing the damn guy's face and it says open

I don't mind the fact that many visually contested shots are "open" as despite what the contest system says, it's still a harder shot than if nobody were there. However, being able to reduce the green window ( shot contest ) by NOT putting a hand up, or by reaching is crazy. It should be fixed.

Contest system feels kinda like real life. Hands up or jump contest doesn't matter if you are that far away that I can get the elbow up and see the rim at release. At that point you're only concerned about safe landing or getting blocked . Anyway they kind of overdid it a little bit but shooting doesn't seem to be too op anyway and pressing square while the opponent shoots should be a foul most of the time
