My first mistake… I bought a handheld as my first radio. There was nobody in range, at least nobody responding (I live in a crowded suburb, amidst other crowded suburbs-go figure) The first contact I made was to myself after I bought a second handheld to confirm the first one actually worked. It was disenfranchising and everything was moth-balled for over a year. But ham radio opened up to me when I bought a 50 watt mobile ftm-300. Six months later, I got on HF, all in (radio, power, antenna, coax, etc)for $1,000 in 2022. My skills are still very limited, but I know enough and know how to use my reference material while I learn. It’s a long learning curve. So, if it’s a path you think wise to pursue, don’t delay another day.

I've tried just listening in on a basic CB all across the country, all 40 channels. And for the most part, no one is even using this communication. Due to the popularity of the modern cell phone. GET ON THE Citizen Band fellas. Talk to each other!

I like to set my UV21 up with my house J-pole . It is so clean sounding for a Fang radio. That same antenna lets me get out 75 miles plus on my 25 watt radio.

Hi Bill, You obviously have some background into Amateur Radio & propagation of radio signals. Suggest that all troops get their ham license (ARRL or HamStudy or…) and get on the air legally. It’s important to do that ASAP, get familiar with usage prior to SHTF. “Stay Stocked” and “Master Your Craft” which includes com’s, while you can. AC3EA

Tube radio general coverage receiver at a minimum . That’s what people need , and refurbish it . A solar EMP will destroy a solid state rig.

tubes are better because they can handle the voltages created by standing waves on the feedline.

Just don't buy radios... Learn them intimately, because when SHTF hits, it's too late to learn. Learn the radio and its features, program it, frequencies. antennas, digital modes and cw.
@davidalbright73353 ай бұрын
Absolutely. This is where the "I don't need no stinkin license" miss the boat. The process of learning and studying to take the tech, general, or extra exams gives you a solid foundation of how all the stuff works. Study the material. Take the exams. Be a real radio operator. KO4ZIV

If you are talking about repeaters I’m sure lots of ham junkies will set up temporary solar repeaters to fill in the gaps.
@dus7772 ай бұрын
Broadcast stations tend to need thousands of watts. We send messages with less than 5 watts on ham radio, consistently. Most broadcast stations have 72 hours, a week, maybe 10 days before they need fuel. Hams often have solar charging and can run almost indefinitely during daytime and as long as batteries work, at night.
