I was one of the troopers that stormed the embassy, after that i joined the rangers, did a stint with Delta force and helped SEAL team 6 take down Bin Laden. Then my mum took my Xbox off me.

I remember when this happened. For me and probably a lot of people it was the first that we had heard about the SAS They later gained more publicity in the Falklands The rescue was pretty amazing to see in broad daylight in full view of the TV cameras, which was nothing like the situation today with 24 hr news and iPhones

Indeed it was shocking to watch something live like that in those days.

My mother used to call me Nimrod if I was doing or said something stupid. It is completely off-topic, but I couldn't help laughing when I heard that word.

The siege led to calls for increasing the firepower of the police to enable them to prevent and deal with similar incidents in the future, and an official report recommended that specialist police firearms units, such as the Metropolitan Police's D11, be better resourced and equipped.

The operation was not what failed in operation Eagle Claw. It was due to having to abort the mission because of a leak inside the pentagon to the press which completely undermined any potential for success. And, of course, the military was blamed for the failure.

That was an incredible evening in may 1980.my 11 year old mind found it hard to comprehend the first minutes of the newsflash when the hooded men appeared on the balcony, then the balcony disappeared and after the smoke cleared two hooded men became four.
