My newish Sienna poschade box holds the glass palette in with magnets. I think that is an improvement.

i have a Sienna Pochade box as well, the smaller version though. I think im going on a couple months using it now. Im lovin it. If it helps, i know a modification that solves the T-bar issue. it requires a good screw driver though. Just remove the metal clamps, unscrew the base holder of each t-bar, and gently separate/loosen the glue that holds the pieces of wood together. Then flip the wood base around and screw back into the other piece of wood. I know this is confusing the way i explain it, but essentially on the outer edge of each T-bar is a perfect canvas /panel holder lip. This mod allows you to use that to hold the panel in place instead of the metal clips. I can send pictures if that doesnt make sense still. Pulling the glue apart does leave blemishes on the wood, but its such a better way to support the canvas, also since it hugs it closer to the backing, you can also use this for wet canvas transport. hope this is helpful to someone in some way.

I bought this years ago based on your review, have really enjoyed it. However, the elbow has become impossible to tighten allowing it to fall when you put brush to panel. I have rigged a coat hanger to help give it resistance. Enjoyed the vid.

I think if you contact the manufacturer (I believe it’s now sold by Jack Richensen) they may provide the replacement parts you need.

HI Carl. I watched your first video on the Sienna Pochade Box last year- before I finalized a decision to receive one for a birthday gift from an awesome gift-giver! (One of those "what do you want for your birthday" types). I love it, but am so busy that most of my painting time is indoors. ...And on portraiture or figures! I am going to delve deeply into landscape art in 2022. Time for me to get busy on that! Thanks for the comments on the cheaper panel carrier. I wondered if that was worth considering. This was a great video - as was your original. Oh, and as another person commented - the palette blocks are now probably 1/4" deep by 1-1/2" long tiny, skinny blocks with strong, micro magnets to clip to an inset plate at the bottom of the sidewall of the palette box. Very cool and they work very well. Perhaps Sienna was listening to your video when you released it! I thoroughly enjoyed this video and the tips in it. My favorite part - that I would not have thought of- was your suggestion to pack business cards. Your words regarding being patient with onlookers and being an ambassador for plein air painters were quite wise and while the thought can be unnerving, perhaps I am a tiny bit more at ease with people observing my painting. I heard someone say that if your set up area is busy, and people tended to disturb you while at work, to wear headphones so you don't have to listen to people perhaps chattering in the background and they then understand that you are listening to music and engrossed in your work. I appreciate you taking the time to produce a helpful, honest video like this. I am inspired and plotting my next Plein Air adventure. Thanks Carl, and Happy Productive Painting! -- Gina in NC

Gina, thanks so much for your thoughtful comments and for sharing your experience with the Sienna paintbox. I haven't seen the new palette retainer blocks. I'm glad to hear they have refined that. Thanks for letting me know about that.

I live in the UK and here the Sienna pochade is more expensive, I'm also assuming spare parts would be less accessible so I guess I'll go for a more local brand. Thank you for your informative video!

Since the Sienna product line was recently sold to another company I’ve noticed that even here in the USA prices have gone up. I’m exploring making inexpensive paint boxes from wood cigar boxes that I hope to reveal in a future video. Thanks for watching! Let us know what you get.

I think the splitting of the wood on the T Holders is a manufacturing issue. I just received my new Sienna Plein Air Pochade box yesterday, and the upper T Holder has little splits on both sides where they screwed in the panel holder, and the bottom T Holder has a split on one side. These are pretty fine splits, and now as wide as they one you showed. I am sure this happens because the screw in the panel holders without first drilling starter holes for the screws. I have emailed Richeson, the manufacturer, and will see what they have to say about replacement parts. If they won't send me a replacement for the T Holders, I plan to fill the splits with super glue and then clamping them close. That will stop it from splitting open further and should actually close the current slit. One other remedy is to take the two screws out of the panel holder, and super glue them in place without the screws, after super gluing and clamping to close the split.

The 9"x12" Gray "Posh" glass palette fits inside the Sienna Pochade box. That's what I use so I don't have to unscrew and take the original glass out to clean. It can rest on top of the original palette. I found mine at Hobby Lobby and used the weekly 40% coupon but you can also order one from Dick Blick. I love my Sienna box. I think it is a real value for the price and it holds so many different size boards and canvases. If you can only afford one pochade box, I think it is the one to get.

Hi! I hope you see this. I'm considering buying this Sienna pochade box. Do you still recommend it for beginners? Is there a reason why the arm broke in order to prevent it from happening? I'm in South Africa, so I imagine the new company won't send a free replacement all the way out here. Would love to hear your opinions and thoughts!
@CarlOlsonArt
@CarlOlsonArt 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I still recommend it. Mine has been going strong since then. The support I believe was a defect in that piece of wood. I’ve had no problems since then.

Carl Olson TV Thank you so much for replying!! 🌷 It’s such a comfort to know that not every box will have a defected piece like that :) Now I just have to get lucky haha May I ask another question? I’m a little on the petite skinny side, should I get the medium or is the large not too heavy for hiking with? Is there anything else I should be considering when deciding what size Sienna pochade box to buy?
@CarlOlsonArt
@CarlOlsonArt 4 жыл бұрын
Angelique Roux the large (which is what have) weighs about 5 pounds. I prefer it because I like having a slightly larger palette area to mix my paints.
@CarlOlsonArt
@CarlOlsonArt 4 жыл бұрын
For hiking, though, it may be a bit heavy for that. By the time you add a tripod, brushes, paints, etc to your kit it adds up. I think my kit using the Sienna backpack weighed in the last time I used it at about twenty pounds.

Hi Carl, I'd like to show you how I solved the wet canvas problem on my diy pochade box, maybe you could get some inspiration and build something similar by yourself, to be used for a one-panel session without the need to carry the other box, it's a simple slide-in solution attached to the pochade box. instagram.com/p/But1i0Ag2xz/? should you need some more detailed pics, feel free to ask ___Luca, Italy
