When I was a kid we had a box fan to cool the house. The sound was similar to these engines so I’d sit in front of it and pretend I was flying. I’d start it on low, then medium and for take off, high. Once I reached cruising altitude, I’d flip it back to medium. Never landed, got bored once we were cruising lol.

@DaveWrightKB9MNM, I thought the very same thing Dave and to this day electric fans like real toned down turboprops. Are those alphanumerics in you channel name a call sign?

Yes they are

What is absolutely wonderful about propeller engines compared to jet engines is that they captivate all the senses. For example, the spinning blades are mesmerising, the sound of the engines are just glorious in your ears, and the smell of the Kerosene fuel is just intoxicating

Oh, I just love this!! Those Allison engines coming to life, nothing like it! I got the wonderful experience of flying a L-188 Electra in 1977 on a charter from my home airport of EVV to DCA for a day trip to Washington, DC with my high school science class. I will never forget it! It was with Evergreen International. If only I had access to good video equipment back then. Thank you so very much for uploading this gem for others to enjoy. It is a classic for sure!!

21:30 an absolutely chilling, but amazing sound as the Allison 501's are spooled up into high RPM.

7:29 I flew in an Eastern Airlines "Golden Falcon" Electra in January, 1960. Flight 656 from Miami to Newark on January 1. It had just flown in from San Juan, P.R., and was delayed owing to "some engine problem" with the #4....

At 23:04 can I ask what's the switch the use before takeoff hence the sound of the engines?

I do not know unfortunately

The Allison 501-D13 has two speeds, ground idle (10,400), and flight idle (13,800). Just prior to takeoff, the Captain selects flight idle. When you advance the throttles, the rpm remains constant. You set power with the torque meters. Max limiting on takeoff is 3000 ft lbs torque, or 913 turbine inlet temp...whichever you hit first. Max power is 3,750 hp. BTW, I ran the calcs on the shot of the F/Os panel at cruise. At 20,000 feet, 260 knots indicated, I assumed ISA Standard temp. Calculates out to 359 knots true air speed.

All these people "singing the praises" of the L-188. I guess everyone has forgotten the wings always fell off. Oh my.

Lockheed redesigned those in the early 60's after a few accidents. They added high strength epoxy material to where the wing joined the body.
