Oh man... This video deserves more views than my bushcrafted update guides. Despite the fact I'm always very obsessed with lore in survival games, I never really explored the signal void story in this way. I even don't remember any references to the machine, so finding it in Langston mine was a grand surprise to me. Grand thanks to you for putting so much time into this masterpiece.

My opinion: 1. Survival mode takes place long after the wintermute story. Abandoned Milton house, destroyed prison etc., devastated world. 2. The events with the machine in the mine take place before the first flare, maybe a year before, this is an alternative retelling of the plot before which alludes to the partial causes of wintermute. There is not enough space in episode 5 to explain this, so it is a good idea to use survival mode for this purpose. 3. Tales and Wintermute are linked in that the events of Tales came sooner. I bet Rudiger did his job in the third map and we won't find him there because we are already years later. He probably went to PM and there caused insomnia by transferring the results from the machine. A moment later, winter mute and problems with the earth's magnetic field began. The thing is that we learn the story of Tale from the perspective of the future, survival, and it happened a long time ago. In the survival sandbox, Rudiger and everyone may already be dead. And the survivor we play with is not the real Will or Astrid, but their appearance from when the game was a demo. I think Astrid and Will's baby may have been in a coma and died in a coma, which is why their marriage fell apart.

Do you think at some point Port Mary could become a region we can explore? Great video, what an incredible job you did bringing everything from the game history and making the connection with the tales. The perseverance mill When the hunter talks about it he only says that it is a city that is not significant, and are the Voices of the forest in this environment since the hunter also talks about them if you ask and they are Ecoterrorists must be involved with something
@ToastyBits11 ай бұрын
I'd like to think that Port Mary would be playable with Episode 5 along with Perseverance Mills, but I don't know. It would be a very different environment since it would essentially be a big town. It would be much larger than Milton and would be filled to the brim with loot. It would have to be carefully balanced. I don't think it is necessary for the story, unless PM is attached in the same region. We also know there is a telescope nearby where Atwood works, so that also needs to be included as well. For the Forest Talkers, I am going to be working on a video for them eventually. They have a long history and I have my theories about them and a specific character in the game.

@@ToastyBits I would think that Port Mary and PM wouldn’t be connected to each other. Astrid mentioned how remote PM is, and Port Mary seems to be an important hub of sorts? I could be wrong, but these areas are probably not convenient to each other.
@ToastyBits11 ай бұрын
They could be separated by a large distance, but some maps don't really follow a regular shape. If they were in the same map, we could see a strangely shaped map with the port on one end, PM on the other, and a really long stretch of empty highway in between.

The one thing that I've wondered since the first Tales and the reveal of the Forsaken Airfield is, was that where Will and Astrid were headed? It's likely, I don't think there's another airfield we know of in Great Bear.
@ToastyBits4 ай бұрын
No. The airfield has been abandoned for a while. I think Will's plane is a sea plane, so it can land on water.

Based on the description of The Zone of Contamination, the Cold War did infact happen in TLD. This part of the description "A Cold War relic of industrial hubris, the Zone is littered with Chemical Hazards and forgotten infrastructure."
@ToastyBits10 ай бұрын
This video was made before the tale launched, but it does confirm the Cold War happened in the universe of The Long Dark. Even though my theory is now ripped to shreds by the new tale, this is still important information.
@HaroldTWay10 ай бұрын
I believe that this machine that Rutiger built caused this whole problem including what brought Will's plane down and everything from then on. From the looks of the design of the machine it looks like some kind of EMP machine. The coils with wire raped around looks like some kind of magnatic machine. This is similar to what I remember in my studies in Electronics. I am looking forward to the forth part of Tales from the Far Territory. I think it will have the answers to a lot of questions.

I was thinking about Port Mary being the town seen in one of the game arts, even on the Wintermute intro, the one that we see before the name "The Long Dark" shows on, where there are lots of cars stranded in a highway before a bridge.
@ToastyBits10 ай бұрын
I'll have to take a look again at that part. It's dark, so it's hard to tell what is going on. There is only 1 bridge with a lot of vehicles on it (Mountain Town) but I don't think that lines up exactly.
@emmylouco10 ай бұрын
@@ToastyBits I think it's a place not shown in the game yet, like the Thomson's Crossing Community Hall when the intro was firstly shown on Wintermute pre redux, it wasn't a existent place yet, and i'm saying this because if you equip the same wallpaper on your steam profile, and if you look close you'll notice some buildings on the background that doesn't fit like being the Spruce Falls bridge, since the image will be brighter in there. In my opinion, if it was shown in the intro like the other places, it will probably be in the game in the future.

Great videos. I have not finished the 3rd tale yet but I’d like to note that there are too many biblical references to ignore. The town of Milton…Milton wrote Paradise Lost…Paradise Meadows Farm. Methuselah, Seraphim Sleep Labs, there was a brief segment in episode 3 about Astrid receiving a rosary even though she wasn’t a believer, the “End of days”… Not sure if you or anyone else has mentioned any of this yet. Something to ponder. Keep up the great work!
@ToastyBits3 ай бұрын
Not yet, but this is common in all games, TV shows, and movies. Biblical references are common, just like references to other religions and mythological creatures. Methuselah is definitely based on the biblical Methuselah in a few ways. It just don't have a whole lot of actual impact on the story, but they are helpful for understanding things better. I'll have to look up the word Seraphim at some point.

So I only just saw this video now. I was rewatching Episode 3 and noticed Astrid worked for the Sleep Research Center I wondered if you'd found that yet. I don't think Astrid was working on the cure for the outbreak though, after Buried Echoes we know Rudiger's experiments were done DECADES ago. But I have a personal theory that Rudiger left Great Bear Island and went on to either found or work with Seraphim Sleep Research Center to further his research. But due to the moral implications of it, the research was locked away. And whatever cure it is was locked away with it which is why Astrid had to do some less than legal means of acquiring it. Also, in regards to the Perserverance Mills residents that drown in the water. The Security Chief has visions of water flowing to the sea, boats and deep water. Also like it's guiding her to it. Just like how the residents might've seen the same visions and walked into the water while their minds were numb. Another idea I just had is how the glimmer fog or effects of the machine reached PM? It could be that it's targeted at the town but since the project has been abandoned for a long time that's unlikely. What is possible is that the residents were all frequent visitors to areas around the Far Territory. Either for work or for other reasons. And it's their frequent visits to the Far Territory that is the reason why they are affected. I think this because the disease isn't even a disease. It's not a known pathogen or any kind of virus. It's caused by exposure to the machine at full power. The machine is not at full power with the aurora in the sky, which is why the glimmer fog doesn't cause us to go crazy, just insomnia. This is why I don't think it's contagious. So they had to have brought it with them if the source (the machine) isn't being pointed at PM. Rambling end

Thank you for the incredible insights here. I've been working on a revision to this video because it is incredibly wrong. I made and released it before the new tale launched. You've honestly been so helpful with the thought process for what is going on. I appreciate it. These points you bring up about the drownings and Seraphim that I think you are onto something. Thanks for watching it!

First of all I loved the video! I have watched all the lore vids as they have come out and it blew my mind. (I have not played wintermute). I have a theory kinda of my own here but is our character (main survival game) cured themselves why we don't suffer in main Great Bear Island but as we get closer to the source we start suffering from glimmer fog. Explaining that the story gave us possibly a half truth in saying that it was shutdown but then was reactivated by the Flare. Would explain the lack of people on alive people on the survival map. (Don't know why its still on but could be the flare is effecting just spots on the planet.) (I think that Survival takes place a time after 6months to 5 years after whintermute) I also agree with you in saying that the bunkers were built or modified between the collapse and events of the tales. Now that I have spoke on that I think @Guilherme77311 brings up a good point in saying that Port Mary should be added. Its the perfect place for the trader giving buildings to loot and putting it in a place that would have rare goods to the rest of the island also not center of the map so not very easy to get to from places. Also giving routes from Desolation Point and Timber Wolf Mountain. I think that Perseverance Mills could be added as also the possible trader area but would lack the ability to resupply. I also think that a tales area could be centered around Port Marry or possible new area in the far territories (Don't really want the later for lore and logical reasons).
@ToastyBits11 ай бұрын
If @Fuar11's theory about the machine is true, the machine turns on during the aurora. Because it was basically a generator according to the diagrams you can see in the bunkers, it would generate some kind of energy field. That energy from the aurora gets released the next day as the glimmer fog. No one would be immune to that, unless they have some kind of brain abnormality. The lack of living people is almost entirely because of the cold. There may be some dead people from the effects of the machine, but I don't think we have seen those corpses just yet. I'm pretty sure that survival is after Wintermute, but not that long. I responded to their comment and you can see what I said about Port Mary.

I have a theory that the character that you play as in survival mode may be the foreman with amnesia due to the machine let's list the facts you spawn randomly in a map area and have no indication of how you got there which might indicate that you asleep walking you have no memory of the layout of the map for some reason you know the name of locations which shows the memory loss of some sort you somehow know how to make items especially blacksmithing and when you're reading the security chief notes and the interview notes you seem to somehow know their voices and by how your character goes out of the way to bury the security chief shows that they might have some sort of relationship since you don't do that for any other Corpses and how your character reacts to the last Foreman note buy physically reacting to coughs it is most likely not in the note it seems like you are recalling a lost memory and you seem to have some sort of innate resistance do the machine in the first place I do realise that The Voice does not change with pick a female character but I'll chop that up to continuity error but I believe there's a slight chance that you the character you play as and the Foreman is one in the same
