Russian Orthodox Cathechuman from The Netherlands here! Orthodoxy is really being revived in the West, praise be to God! Many people, especially young people (men mostly) are converting from atheist or protestantism (or atheism to portestantism to orthodoxy) to Holy Orthodoxy (inlcuding me)! In 1 year the church has roughly doubled in size, so much so we are shorthanded on Priests! This is also due to Ukrainian refugees coming here ofcourse. Thank God tho that in the span of a month, we've gained 1 extra Priest from Ukraine and 2 Deacons! I feel like with the age of the internet, any new convert into Christianity who looks up the Church history ends up at Holy Orthodoxy! we are increasing in numbers, even in England i've seen numbers that the Orthodox church there has doubled while any other denomination has shrinked!

I’m from South Australia - worshipping at the first totally English speaking parish in Greek Archdiocese in all of Australia ( began early last year) . I converted 25 years ago and have never seen the numbers of enquirers, catechumens and newly illumined. And not just us- our son worships in a Rocor parish that worships primarily in Russian - they too have many many catechumens and newly illumined. I have no hard stats but this is so great to see on a personal level and meeting and encouraging many in their walks and seeing a multiethnic parish blossom in little old Adelaide just blows me away. Authentic , decent, hungry people are all around us- and we MUST rise to the occasion and reap the harvest- wherever you are. Our society here is godless and people are hurting so much and living a shadow existence that God through the ark of the church has the answers for so I urge all you faithful to secure your own faith, live in repentance and holiness to be the light in this dark age. No one in the first century could have rationally seen the fall of the Roman Empire to Christ - why can we not believe in a holy Australia or even USA or any other godless place ?? Thank you again Father

The fruits of secularization and poor evangelization have now been laid completely bare. While this is a sad constation, it at least shows us the state that we are actually in and now we can start truly growing again.

It seems like there deliberate effort to hide the pagan ways describing of God that existed in the original writings of Old Testament by the Greek and English tranlators.

Hey, if you are interested in that sort of stuff, I would check out The Lord of Spirits podcast. They have a lot of episodes that delve into how the ancient Israelites interacted and communicated with other Near Eastern religions. They often dive into the linguistics and translations when things are unclear. I don't know anything about Karen Armstrong, but I do know that some contemporary scholars, both Christian and non-Christian come to funny conclusions about what the Old Testament is saying on certain things like God, gods, angels, etc. because they are not familiar with how Israelites, early Christians, and the Orthodox Church, read and interpret the Bible. Hope this helps. The podcast is well worth listening to either way.

I grew up going to a non-denominational church. I'm just learning about Orthodoxy, does it have its own Bible or is it basically the King James Bible?
@ienjoyapples2 ай бұрын
Orthodoxy originates from mostly non-English-speaking countries, so there are a variety of translations of the Bible in Orthodoxy. For English-speaking Orthodox Christians, the go-to English translation is the Orthodox Study Bible. It's basically taken from the New King James Version, except the Old Testament relies heavily on modern translations of the Septuagint. The Septuagint is an ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament which Christ and the apostles themselves read. The Orthodox canon also differs slightly from the Protestant canon. Some books considered to be apocryphal by Protestants are canonical in Orthodoxy, but the Orthodox canon includes all the books of the Protestant canon.

We don't necessarily have an official Bible in English. Most people would probably use the Orthodox Study Bible which is pretty good IMO. I really like the King James as well since it uses a very similar New Testament manuscript as the ones that are commonly used in the Orthodox Church. Probably worth reading multiple in many cases. But normally when just reading I'll read the Orthodox Study Bible.

The video has an image of church ( Orthodox ??) with many pews !! St.John Damascene say : " We implore the people of God to keep steadfastly the tradition of the Church! " Pews and chairs suffocate the entire prayer space and are not in accordance with the Orthodox tradition. Sitting ist not a position of honor , but a passive position like at a conference. In the Orthodox tradition , standing at the Holy Liturgy , is a natural gesture of respect to meet the Emperor Christ who arrives in word and mystery together with the heavenly power. The pews and chairs make it difficult and prevent any free movement of an active prayer ( the prostrations and the change of place during the Liturgy ) Even their only presence in an Orthodox Church is a sign of spiritual regression. ( Quote from Father Johannes Nothhaas)
