Dude, sometimes I don't get you at all. Finding out all about Lecter before we met him was BRILLIANT, I don't think of it as a spoiler at all. It was all a tremendous build up to that scene where Starling and Lecter first meet. It added to the atmosphere and put us in Starling's shoes. Now it might've backfired if a lesser actor played Lector and didn't live up to the buildup. But Anthony Hopkins was up to the task, he was incredible.

A jumpscare relieves tension. The tension is built up by the descriptions and allusions. That's what separates a work of art from a cheap assembly-line "horror movie" - the latter will go for the easy, quick effect. As for the spoiling of the escape by showing in advance that Lecter had a lockpick, that's a wonderful technique to build tension once more - you know something is coming so you feel the anxiety for longer. Hitchcock described the technique by saying if you see a bad-guy hide a bomb beneath a table, and then two characters you like sit at the table and talk the scene becomes almost unbearably tense and suspenseful. If the table just blew up without warning you'd give the audience a moment of shock- but the effect would be greatly lessened overall

The idea behind Hannibal Lecter’s courtesy towards Clarice is a true affection for her. He genuinely appreciates her as an individual more so than the rest of us. Not that she is equal to him. But even farmers have a favorite animal they won’t send to slaughter.
@Ruskad

Definitely more of a thriller or suspense. I found it entertaining how you called so many things a spoiler but the storytelling worked because of the extra knowledge. Knowing what Bill looked like early didn't change the story and it gave us the setup at the end where we know Clarice found him unknowingly! Classic movie, amazing characters... another fun reaction video!

This guy applies dimestore psychology to everything he sees, and then pats himself on the back for figuring out the perfectly obvious plot points the director blatantly revealed. Good horror movies do not rely on cheap jump scares to scare you, the thing this movie does is make you feel uneasy almost the entire time, especially with the choreography putting you in the eyes of Clarice when they zoom in on the men's faces when they attempt to hit on her or just to be in her face

The music playing when Hannibal attacks the guards is "Sheep May Safely Graze" by Bach. And when he mutilated the guard's body, he turned it into a Death's Head Moth. YES- I believe Hitchcock called that suspense- "telling the audience there's a bomb under the table and forcing them to watch people have a dinner at that table"- I'm paraphrasing but I feel like that sums it up perfectly. Putting what could happen in your mind and keeping you bracing yourself for it to come to pass.

I love your interpretation of the movie essentially "spoiling" every potential jump-scare, acting as an "anti-horror" movie. I agree I think, since the movie is definitely more interested in cultivating a sense of psychological dread, tension, and queasy uncertainty, and jump-scares would dissipate a lot of that energy.

However, all of his analyzing makes him miss a lot of small but iimportant details. " ...takes away the suspense by showing us he has some kind of lockpicking device". Alfred Hitchcock once gave an interview telling the difference between horror and suspense. In a horror film you will watch two men talking for ten minutes and then a bomb explodes. In suspense you will see two men talking, then a cut to a bomb set to go off in ten minutes, and then back to the two men talking. Yes we were spoiled seeing the bomb, but our anticipation is heightened waiting to see if the bomb is going to go off. This was more of a suspense film rather than a horror.

Hannibal Lecter was born in 1933, within an ancient castle in Vilnius, Lithuania, into the wealthy aristocratic family that lived there; his father, simply known as Count Lecter, was a descendant of the warlord "Hannibal the Grim" (1365-1428). Lecter grew up well-educated under the eyes of his father, who out of silent curiosity spoiled him with learning English, German and Lithuanian every day in the castle’s study. At age 6, he discovered an old edition of Euclid’s Elements with hand-drawn illustrations, which he used to determine the height of the castle towers over the summer. That fall, he was introduced to a baby sister, Mischa, with whom he formed a strong, affectionate bond. When she grew old enough to wander, Lecter gave her a feeling of discovery. In the winter of 1941, the castle was overrun by Nazi military forces who were taking part in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. Lecter, who was 8 years old at the time, fled with his family to a lodge in the forest, where they spent three years feeding on animals. However, one winter's day in 1944 a Soviet tank stopped by the lodge demanding for water, only to be bombed by a Nazi Stuka. Lecter's parents, tutor, and family retainers were all killed by the resulting blast, and he and Mischa were held captive when a group of former Lithuanian Hilfswillige led by Nazi collaborator Vladis Grutas stormed and looted the lodge. With all sources of food exhausted, Mischa was killed and cannibalized by the group, but Lecter escaped. However, he was severely traumatized by his sister's death and rendered temporarily mute for a short while. Mischa's death would haunt him for the rest of his life; he would later explain that it destroyed his faith in God, and thereafter he believed that there was no real justice in the world. Peace out.

Jonathan Demme wasn't trying to surprise you or scare you. He was trying to make you feel tense and nervous even though you had an idea for what was coming. You knew what was coming but you didn't know when, where, or how it was going to come. One technical detail about the movie. The scene where Buffalo Bill is stalking Clarice in the basement was shot in normal light and the night vision effects were added in post production. That means Jodie Foster was having to act like she was stumbling around in complete darkness when she could actually see everything around her perfectly clearly. Knowing that makes her performance even more impressive.

What you said about jump scares is exactly why this is the best psychological horror movie I’ve ever seen. There are no jump scares. This isn’t one of those standard horror movies where a bunch of college students go into the woods and someone starts taking them out gruesomely one by one. This is the thinking man’s horror movie. This won an Oscar. That almost never happens in the horror genre. This movie wants to get into your head and stay with you. Of the sequels, Red Dragon is the one to watch. It’s a prequel, so Clarice isn’t in it, and we see how Hannibal is caught. Edward Norton plays off Anthony Hopkins really well too.

Considering this movie won 5 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, I guess maybe not many people felt the same way you did about "spoiling scenes". Example: showing Buffalo Bill with his night vision goggles, stalking his prey like a wild animal in the shadows, made us instantly scared for Catherine! What was about to happen to her? Just cutting to a guy with a cast putting a sofa in his van would have been a completely different and not nearly as effective scene. If jump scares and gore is what makes a better "horror" movie for you, instead of criticizing the most amazing psychological drama/thriller ever crafted, might I suggest Friday the 13th or Nightmare On Elm Street. Might be a better fit.

The story was inspired by the time the FBI asked Ted Bundy to create a profile of the green river killer, when they finally arrested him the realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate. The scene where Bill kidnaps Catherine is also inspired by Bundy who would pretend to have a broken arm and act like he was struggling to get something in his car and when the woman he wanted helped him he would hit her over the head and push her in his car. Buffalo bill was inspired by a few serial killers including Ed Gein who besides killing a few people would also steal recently buried bodies and make things out of their bodies like a pair of gloves and a lampshade made from human skin and furniture made from bones and skulls. I found out recently that the actors who played Buffalo bill and Catherine actually dated while filming the movie. The didn’t spoil anything by showing things like the lock picking device.

Anthony Hopkins struggled for years to become a famous actor, he played in Elephant Man years before but his fame didn't last long. He was an alcoholic and had a strained relationship with his daughter after his marriage failed. But Silence of the Lambs is what saved him, I think he even won an award for his performance. The Hannibal movies are all out of order, so it'll be confusing, but this is the order they should be watched; Hannibal Raising, Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal. I heard the TV show is good and it has a different actor playing Hannibal but it matches the character so much better, it works with the younger Hannibal.

Another thing i wanted to note is that the director took great lengths in establishing Transgender people and how Buffalo Bill is not one. I find that a great touch of professionalism in doing proper research otherwise this film would have been held up as a scare tactic for people to hate transgender people.

TBH, he only kills & eats the rude, nasty, disgusting, and nasty people mostly. He does kill out if necessity though, like the 2 guards, the people in ambulance, and a tourist (I think). That is what makes him a "monster". However, he would not kill them if he didn't have to. I think all thoughts kills (except for the one guard) are off camera on purpose, just so we don't have a picture of just how deadly and psychotic he can actually be. P.S. I'm not sure about the census takers personality, but I would assume she was "very rude". Although he did not kill her, he left her with a lot of scars to remember him and maybe how she treats and talks to others. Remember, this is fiction, so in real life, we would all be disgusted by and root against Hannibal.

The setup of this movie is incredible when you think of the fact that Anthony Hopkins had less than 10 minutes of screen time all together yet created a character that was iconic for years to come

1. The lisping sound Hopkins makes after he says, 'I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." is the first scene he and Foster did together and he wanted to freak her out, so her reaction is real. 2. Ted Levine/Buffalo Bill was so disturbing that he received death threats after this was released. 3. The FBI actually let them use their Quantico facility to film. 4. Hanibal was treating her. 5. "I'm coming to get you Murdock". The late Charles Napier/Lt. Boyle(RIP) played Murdock in Rambo First Blood II. A great first time/share. 6. Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. 🙄 7. Others will pass this to you as well but: This movie won ALL 5 of the big Oscars.😎 Levine should have gotten best supporting.

So here's some interesting trivia that most people don't know the scene when Hannibal comments that he ate his liver with fava beans and a lovely Chianti The medication that he was supposed to be on specifically is not supposed to be taken with high tannin wines like red and foods that are high in vitamin A and both liver and fava beans are So in reality he's telling the doctor that he is fully off of his meds. Just thought it was kind of interesting and adds another level of depth to that scene They made a lovely TV series called Hannibal that goes over some of his life as a prequel before the movie when it was fantastically done might be worth checking out with how much you seem to enjoy this movie Great reaction man keep up the good work

They knew because various studies have shown that serial killers will often let their victims go if the person humanizes themselves enough to the killer. The worst thing you can do is beg for your life because in the killer's mind this actually dehumanizes you. Even some of our worst serial killers have admitted to letting people go that they intended to kill because the person somehow managed to humanize themselves enough in the killer's mind and in almost all cases the victim did not beg. The trick is to humanize yourself without begging in a way the killer does not expect so you can slip past their psychological and emotionally defenses. Obviously, this does work in all cases and there are certainly some killers who do not care how human their victim is and will kill them.

Sir Anthony Hopkins did an amazing job in this movie! And your frustrations with how they spoiled things are entirely your own. This movie is a masterpiece. It’s my favorite of the three.

Red Dragon is a prequel to this, I'd recommend it. Hannibal was also good as a sequel and Hannibal Rising shows Dr Lecture as a teen/early 20's in an origin film.

Mistaking "Wild Bill" for "Buffalo Bill" is understandable. Both were cowboy legends, real people you can read about on Wiki. Wild Bill Hickok died in Deadwood, shot in the back (actual town + the show too) holding aces and 8's...hence it's the "Dead Man's Hand." William Cody (Buffalo Bill) passed away less dramatically. Both were *extremely* famous for different reasons and both are worth reading about.

Its not a horror movie, its a psychological thriller. they also don’t always show things because your mind can be worse than the real thing. But, this is not a horror movie for shock and awe. This is a suspense thriller.

I would definitely recommend Hannibal and Red Dragon after this. Hannibal Rising is decent as well. Red Dragon is a prequel that is also a reboot of the movie Manhunter from the 80s. The books are all amazing as well!

Jodie Foster (Clarice Starling) was terrified of Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Hannibal Lector. This is why she never did another Hannibal movie. She had nighrmares of him for years and needed therapy to deal with everything she saw in this movie.

Buffalo Bill is an amalgam of several real life serial killers. His ruses came from Ted Bundy (eg. the cast) and his woman suit idea came directly from Ed Gein (don't image search him, as he made all sorts of things out of human parts, and you'll see some bad pictures). You should check out the TV show. It is a sorta-prequel, where Hannibal is free, on the outside, and working with the FBI as a consultant. The main characters are Hannibal, and Will Graham, the FBI profiler who was his partner, but also the person who caught him (the chronological order of the movies is Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal, and the show amalgamates the three and adds a lot). It's actually as good as the movies, and the casting is great--Mads Mikkelsen plays Hannibal and Lawrence Fishburne plays Crawford. Also, it has some of the most insane and borderline psychedelic murder scenes you will ever see, such as a man who is disemboweled, borderline decapitated, and then flensed so that his vocal cords can be treated and played like they were cello strings.

They're of the Hitchcock school of suspense. If you know something will happen, the suspense of anticipation is a more rewarding payoff than a temporary jump scare.

Anthony Hopkins was Amazing in this movie. I will never forget when my family went to watch it in the theater when it first came out. I was 20 my sister was 25 and my parents. Now my dad took me to see the Shining when I was 8, and my sister had certainly seen horror movies. Oh and we hadn't decided on a movie yet but voted on wether to eat before the movie or after, I wanted to eat before the movie but was outvoted. So anyway we get to the theater and even though I recommended that we don't watch that movie because I heard that it was Too Intense, I was outvoted again. Needless to say no one was hungry afterwards, Hahahahahahahaha 😂!!!

When I talk to people about worth & intelligence I usually tell the story of two men. Bob is a supremely clever man, knows nearly everything you could, there is just one thing he doesnt really know. Tom is the opposite, knows nothing truly save one thing. That one thing is the thing that Bob doesnt know, it would also save Bobs life. If the two men were to weigh their knowledge, what would Bob trade for Toms knowledge, the one thing he doesnt know? I have heard some of the best ideas from the most unexpected people, they just are usually not listened to, they also themselves often don.t know the great ideas from the truly awful. Was just thinking about this when you were talking about people that think they are better, PHD's

I would also highly recomend watching the tv series "Hannibal", starring Mads Mikelson as Dr Lector, with Hugh Dancy as Will Graham. It ran for several season, and showrunner Bryan Fuller did an amazing job. I'm still kind f amazed at how much graphic violence they got away with at the time, considering it ws a network tv show ( NBC).

The only thing that's bad about this movie is its knowledge of geography. Clarice tells Lector that Bill got his nickname from the Kansas City Homicide Department but on the map Lector gives Clarice all of the bodies and crime scenes occur east of the Mississippi River. There is no reason for Kansas City homicide to be involved in the case. Later on Crawford says they got the tip off to Gumb due to a crate of moths from Surinam he tried to get through LAX. However, the bug guy that Starling talks to says the death head moth is only found in southeast Asia. Surinam is in South America, not Asia.

They wanted you to feel some sympathy or likeness towards Hannibal so in order to do that, that is why they don't show you directly what he has done so you can feel distance from his bad things. Until you actually see him do his bad things later. And that is also why they spoiled every other surprise scene and then not spoil the faceoff scene.

My personal assessment of Lecter is that he is so much more...refined...and intelligent than others. That makes me believe that he isn't insane in the typical sense. He is just above society. He sees human as the ultimate delicacy because he is the only one above humans in the food chain. Mankind preys on whatever animal they wish because we can, we are superior. Lecter being above the rest puts one more animal on the menu.

My Nana watched this movie in theaters when it came out. I asked her how it was and she told me they were things in it a woman shouldn’t see. Of course, my Nana referred to every female as a “girl” regardless of age. Nana didn’t mean anything by it. It was just a term to her.
