I love how Anthony Hopkins and Mads Mikkelsen give two very different terrifying portrayals of Hannibal. Hopkins' Hannibal is so beautifully over the top and creepy in how he'll tell you exactly what monstrous shit is on his mind. Mikkelsen's Hannibal though, you never have any idea what he's thinking or what he's going to do. He could viciously murder you at the drop of a hat and never lose his composure.
@passerby25624 жыл бұрын
Actually they can both be the same person. Most serial killers lose the mask after being caught. They become terrifyingly honest. So Mads is Hannibal before being captured and Hopkins is after older too. He has no reason to hide anymore.
@christophercano80324 жыл бұрын
@@passerby2562 I don't think so because even after Mads' Hannibal is incarcerated, he remains as composed and enigmatic as ever. It's not so much that he drops the mask and becomes more honest, as it the is the other characters now knowing that whatever he's thinking/planning can't be good.
@passerby25624 жыл бұрын
@@christophercano8032 yeah I understand that, but I was thinking about it as a comparison to real life psychopaths. They would act like Mads Hannibal until they are caught then they become extremely honest and straight forward after being caught... they have lost the game. and I think that the reason Mads Hannibal stayed enigmatic is because he is still playing the game. And He has not been incarcerated for that long yet

Do the Hannibal series. Please. Hopkins embodied the contained fury of Lecter. It helps to know Lecter's backstory. And yeah, he has extremely refined sensibilities, and hates anything tacky. So the Gospel music was basically torture. But he could tune it out. Chilton was in way over his head. Lecter knows he's abnormal, but he chooses to embrace his monster. And he's smart enough to keep it reined in when he wants to. Manhunter is actually good. Very dated, but good. Red Dragon wasn't awful... But it didn't Stand up to Silence. The moth is a symbol of his personal transformation. It's a Death's Head moth, which has a skull on it. So transformation and death. He wanted a sex change, but was too mentally unstable to be a good candidate for the surgery. Moths are also associated with horror, the night, etc. So it represents his twisted perception of himself and others.

The book was fiction but was loosely inspired by real serial killers such as Gary Heidnik who had an underground torture chamber for victims and Ed Gein, the Butcher of Plainfield, who robbed graves in order to acquire their bones and skin, making bowls, lampshades, and articles of clothing. The show HANNIBAL is great and is basically inspired by two paragraphs of the first book RED DRAGON where Will Graham and Lecter have a conversation and reflect on the strange bond they share through mutual understanding. The studio didn't have the rights to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (those movie rights were given to a different studio after the first Red Dragon movie MANHUNTER did so poorly), so because of that and other factors the show really reboots the canon and couldn't have anyone named Clarice or Buffalo Bill or Jame Gumb. The scene that shows him looking at the pen is meant to show what he was really focusing on , doctor Chilton was careless and Hannibal probably took the pen as soon as he got a chance during that day

I'm gonna add another comment about the TV show Hannibal, it is truly a work of art and might just be my favourite show of all time

The guy who played Buffalo Bill was also Captain Stottlemeyer on the show Monk. Took me 20 years to figure that out.

My favorite piece of acting in this whole film is where she finally tells the whole story and he is about to tell her what she needs to know... except Chilton enters... and so he has to clam up... and you can see his anger, regret and then all of it fade into a blank shell in moments.... You know that once she told him the truth, he wanted to make good on his part, but COULDN'T because he absolutely would not share that information with Chilton.

I'd like to add my voice to recommend the TV show Hannibal! Some other reactors manage on KZbin, but if you run into copyright trouble, you could as a last resort make it a Patreon-only reaction, I would totally pay to see it!
