Not a thriller. It's a horror movie straight up..all the uptight members of the Oscars just called it a thriller to save face from giving a horror movie the best picture. A cannibal who eats people and chasing down a man who skins women in order to make a suit and become a woman...You know who else did both those things? Leatherface

For Beauty and the Beast to be nominated was a milestone that generated more news and press than the actual winner. Animation had never been considered in a Academy slot outside of score and song (Save for Snow White's special Oscar) To have seen this as a young artist was amazing, and I knew it was a step that would be remembered for ever.

This was the last time Elizabeth Taylor would present the Best Picture Oscar; she was 60 years old at the time of broadcast. What a way to celebrate her birthday! Sadly she would pass away 19 years later after various health problems. And it was also, if I remember correctly, the only time Paul Newman, actor and co-owner of what was then Newman-Haas Racing and not related to composers Alfred, Lionel, Randy, Thomas and David Newman, presented the Best Picture Oscar; he was 67 years old, 7 years older than Taylor. RIP Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman, the latter of which passed away just 16 years later at the age of 83!

It has been over 30 years since this film released and it has still not left the public consciousness. That is the staying power of this movie. It's a pop culture phenomenon and "The Godfather" of all thrillers . There is a reason it sits at #7 on the all ranked Best Picture winners list (all 96 of them that won Best Picture) over at IMDB because it's a true classic and beloved by almost every audience member who sees it and one where the Academy actually got it right. I recently showed it to my young nephews and their friends (aged between 16 and 19) and they were all spell bound by it saying it was one of the best films they had ever seen.

I saw this movie at a theater in Newton, MA. I'd stopped by the theater previously and was given an invitation to watch a new movie starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. No more info was given that I can remember. A friend and I went and we were blown away by the picture. When it ended we (the entire audience) were asked to stay and fill out a questionnaire about every aspect of the film. On the way out there were several men in suits hanging out in the lobby. Then nothing. A year to a year and half went by and we were wondering what ever happened to that great movie. It eventually was released and the rest is history.
