Well, if your prey has no idea you're coming, and it's already too late by the time you arrive, then you don't need to be fast, it's just another amazing way evolution works.
@tusheschannel
@tusheschannel 7 жыл бұрын
Linnet The way Evolution works is through life constantly experimenting within it's environment and changing and adapting to survive accordingly. Birds generally survive because they're much quicker than their predators and prey, the owl tends to go unnoticed though, so generally doesn't require as much speed.
@tusheschannel
@tusheschannel 7 жыл бұрын
Linnet I won't argue becaue I know how important careful wording is when it comes to properly explaining Evolution. I agree with what you're saying, but sometimes think words like 'luck' should be left out of it, I mean ANY healthy living creature (as defined by it's individual requirements for good health) could be described as 'lucky' if it meets the general standards of it's species, but for something to gradually push beyond good fortune, to the point that it's 'luckiness' because the standard amongst it's species, to me that is the true defining factor in Evolution, the spreading and normalisation of good fortune.

@hughJ
@hughJ Жыл бұрын
Yep. Not only that, but they clearly did multiple takes because in one shot the owl is standing on 1 box, while its actual flight used 2 boxes, (while the other birds had no boxes.) The filmmakers presumably didn't get the dramatic result they were expecting with the owl so they kept changing the conditions until it did.

+Micheal Watts Are you kidding? Well, yes ... I suppose you are. Took me a minute. Sorry. Anyway, owls are some of the most specialized birds on earth in regard to sound. As we see here the owl has evolved almost total sound suppression to attack prey by surprise, and on the other side, has extremely acute hearing in the frequencies emitted by the movement and utterances of its prey. And some species of owl have ear openings on two different levels on their heads, increasing their ability to "see" in 3-D sound, an incredible example of a kind of ranging array, not unlike something we would make, not having already evolved it.

Hm. Although owl feathers structures are different and definitely make their wings more quiet, I think the take off height also has something to do with it in this particular experiment. Because the owl had a little more height, he could glide more and wouldn't have to flap as hard. Would have liked to see him take off from the same platform as the other birds.

Because owls are slower, they may not be able to take off horizontally like the other birds did. If they'd lifted the other birds to the same height those birds would probably have flown higher over the microphones than the owl ended up flying after its initial drop.

@pewpew6569 9 жыл бұрын
While there is a fact that owls fly more silently and smoothly than any other birds, the comparison shown in this clip was biased. The owl's take off height was higher than the other two birds. The pigeon and the falcon need to exert bigger and faster flaps to gain lift during their take offs causing much turbulence in the air.
@Partyaap050
@Partyaap050 8 жыл бұрын
Not biased at all. Not matter how the owl would take off, it wouldn't produce more sound. These owls can jump into the air from standing and fly off without producing any sound. These owls are just very silent which creates your illusion of 'it must be biased because of take off' but in reality, it doesn't matter.

+Colette Lane The "Fur Balls" are called pellets, and are a natural process where the food the owls eat (they swallow whole mice and other things) go to their gizzard, an organ that owls specifically have, which will digest all the nutritious parts of their food, and all the hair, bones, teeth and otherwise that remain from the food they swallowed are coughed back up and disposed of in the pellets that you've heard of.

Maybe it's due to the direction of the animals when flying. The owl's direction is a parabolic shape while the other birds' direction is a zigzag or something not smoother like the owl's direction. This reduces the pressure of friction which is horizontal. Then the owl moves smoother and does not need to flap as many times as the others.
