In the 1970s, Taiwan faced challenges of diplomatic isolation and industrial transformation. To shift industries from labor-intensive to technology-intensive, the government collaborated with Radio Corporation of America (RCA) to develop integrated circuit (IC) technology. This effort led to the formation of key companies like UMC, TSMC, and VIS, and the establishment of ITRI’s first IC production line. These initiatives nurtured Taiwan’s complete semiconductor supply chain, solidifying its status as the "Silicon Island" and a global leader in the industry.
