The Silver Line is the only bus rapid transit (BRT) line currently operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). It operates in two sections; the first runs from Dudley Square in Roxbury to downtown Boston, Massachusetts and South Station, mostly via Washington Street, with buses operating in reserved lanes. The second section runs from South Station to several points in South Boston and to Logan Airport in East Boston, partly in a dedicated bus tunnel and also on dedicated surface right-of-way. Riders can transfer between the sections at South Station; transfers there between SL1 and SL2 and the Red Line - but not SL4 - are within fare control.

This is totally new to me! I have rode on Boston trackless trolleys in the past, but never knew of this service until browsing at other trolley coach videos, mostly classic ones of coaches no longer running. Many years ago, Public Transport in New Jersey experimented with trolley coaches that also used diesel engines where overhead wires were not used. They had a basket that would catch the dual poles and guide them to the wires. Thanks for sharing. I need to find out more info on this line.

You see the two triangular metal "roofs" along the wires when the buses raise their poles at 4:15? Those help guide and "re-rail" the poles onto the wires.

@482lost we have the exact same thing in Seattle. We have dual tunnels which have buses and light rails sharing the road. We also have trolley buses.

Now we have Link Light Rail and RapidRide A, B, C, D and S routes. Theres no need for the Bredas anymore. The Bredas are now used as street trollies instead for routes, 7 to Rainier Beach/Prentice, 36 Othello Station (sometimes), 43 U District, 44 Ballard, 49 U District.

All the tunnel buses are being overhauled, body and electric equipment. So they should be good for at least another 5 years. Five battery-electric buses are on order but they will be to increase the service e.g. for the new SL3 line.

There are trolleybuses in tunnels in Seattle, Washington; and Boston, Massachusetts. Diesel buses run through shared tunnels with trains in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It's rare but not unique in the United States.

They are dual-mode buses. They use electricity in the tunnels, and can use diesel when electricity is not available, so they can go where there aren't any wires.

Kind of a city budget white elephant too, cause tunneling is expensive and should be used for long trains that carry a lot of people and make a lot of money on fares. rather than short buses. Buses just can't make enough fares to pay back the high cost of digging the tunnels.

Потому, что опускать и поднимать их нужно только в аварийных ситуациях. Привод штанг есть в троллейбусах с автономным ходом, в которых это надо делать часто.

Нет необходимости в этом в обычных троллейбусах. Водитель их только в случае поломки или еще чего спускают. Только лишняя прибавка к цене покупки и обслуживания. А вот в троллейбусах с аккумуляторами их ставят, ибо частенько по их маршруту чередуются отрезки, где есть контактная сеть и где ее нету.

Ibrahim Jalloh Look closely and you will see 2 trolley poles on top of each bus. There's very little clearance, and it's hard to see, but they are there. They are called dual-mode buses, and they use diesel engines outside of the tunnels.

These are Neoplan buses which is a German company. Though these were made by the US Neoplan division that went bankrupt in 2006. The bus designs are from the parent company with some modifications.They are 15-20 year old buses.
