I have been a woodworker and hand tool enthusiast for almost 20 years, and still the precision with which some people handle a hatchet is astonishing to me. I’ve always seen a hatchet as being good for only the crudest of work but clearly this is not the case. Looks like I have a lot of practice ahead of me.

I love videos with no narration and just the sound of the work. Very soothing. There's a series on youtube of a man building a log cabin in the woods, no power tools, with just the sounds of the hand tools. Highly recommend!

WOW, I`m in awe at this guys Talent. There`s so much precision with the axe its unbelievable , and his carving skills with the hook knife and sloyd are also outstanding and not any leather protection in sight , that's scary stuff. I was greatly impressed by his finishing without using sandpaper also . Now that`s what I consider pure Skill at what he does.

I carve too. Usually realistic fish and caricature cowboys. I have done some spoons too. Very nice job! One tip, Wear a kevlar Carving glove. It looks like a fish cleaning glove. I know I have a permanent 90 degree bend in my forefinger after 3 surgeries trying to straighten it after pushing a knife to the bone when it slipped. Thanks for sharing.

@@edwinmason123 I know what I am doing too. I have been carving for over 30 yrs. It does take reminders, because you get too comfortable with sharp knives, you forget safety. It is a professional courtesy to remind him. I am sure he appreciates it and does not take offense. Have a great day!

As far as separate channel question… guess it depends. We wrestle with that question too. But in the end it’s part of who you are and what you show on the road is who you are and how you spend your time doing what most dream to do. So, I’d say keep it in the same channel but create a prominent playlist that is both accessible and searchable.

The carving looks really enjoyable and therapeutic. I used to do some of it myself when I was in the Boy Scouts but I just called it "whittlin'". LOL I did wonder why you didn't spread a tarp so that you could easily catch all of those scraps that I have to think would make great tinder for future campfires!

Dave, you got me started carving spoons as you know. My wife wants me to keep them I sanded as you do, but I can’t help myself. I just did a dish out of sugar maple and the finish was like glass. YES start a channel, as I am a big fan of yours. I split a piece of maple and did a spoon (I called it a spoonchala). Spoon and spatula. And the serving dish. You keep me inspired. David and Juanita aka Grey Goose Adventures… btw, we live a mile south of Marineland near Flagler Beach.

Some wood is just meant to be sanded;) I’ve sanded some Mesquite and it is amazing and won’t fuzz up when wet like others will when sanded. We know Flagler beach well. We’ll be in Florida quite a bit this winter so maybe we’ll see you around!;)

@@CareyOnVagabond I try to watch that documentary every few years. I’ve never gone full on bush like Dick did. But I have lived and worked on remote ranches in Montana and remote early warning radar stations(as a civilian) and gold mining camps in the bush of Alaska. If my wife were up for it, I’d move further up into the remote regions of Montana and live more closely with nature. But thankfully, my loverly wife has more sense than I do. At 61, it might be a bit too much for me to take on. So, we do our camping/climbing adventures in the region. Life is very good! Carey On!

It’s apple wood from Oregon. I use a variety of tools, some hand forged but the mora knives and beaver craft listed in the description with amazon links are awesome and inexpensive. I think the beaver craft is my cheapest knife and used the most. The most expensive thing is my hand forged carving axe from the Ukraine made of ball bearing steel. It’s by Woodsmans Finest.

Absolutely! I find it very relaxing and satisfying to watch Dave carve beautiful spoons. We have enjoyed our spoons immensely, keeping them oiled with food safe oil such as hemp seed or flax..keep up the great work Dave! Have you thought about doing salad tossing utensils or "spurtles?" (They're good for scraping a bowl or scooping out mayo, peanut butter, etc.) 💕
