I went in for quinetic switches in a big way in a recent refurb: I have 7 receivers in a cupboard, as well as 2 double receiver switches, and many many child switches at all doorways. It's great: you can switch lights to get all the way from the hallway to any door without having to stumble in the dark, plus outdoor lights with switches both inside and out. And in the garage, so I have a switch at both ends. Yeah, love em (and TLC love me for buying them!).

@@MaximusJohalno, they have quite a heavy "click" as you press them; the kinetic energy from that is used to power them.

Thank you so much for this video. I had under cabinet lighting installed by the kitchen fitters some years ago. It has never been very bright so I haven't bothered using it. After watching your video, I investigated what was on the top of my cabinets to find that the existing lights were connected to standard junction boxes for their transformers so it would just be a case of disconnecting those and wiring the new lights to work off the existing wired switch. I purchased 3 Sensio Tri Tone lights from Toolstation and fitted them yesterday. The hardest part of the job was getting the new cables down the back of the cabinets! Thanks to you I now have really well lit work surfaces. I've picked up lots of tips from you so please keep up the good work. Any chance of a short video on how to use Wago connectors?

Kinetic switches are a specific type of wireless electronic switches. Quinetic is a brand of kinetic switch, the Amazon brands are not Quinetic. True Kinetic switches do not require batteries and are called kinetic because the power to activate the electronics of the switch comes from the kinetic energy produced by the mechanical action of activating the switch.

When I installed under-cabinet light during the pandemic, I chose Black & Decker bar lights. While there are 2 places that I can physically switch the lights on/off, in practice I use the motion detector switch. I simply wave my hand under a particular part of the cabinets and it turns them on or off. They stay on for 2-3 hrs, then turn off.

You can generally "wire in" rechargeable lights as well, by plugging a USB charger into them. The advantage is that, if the power goes out, the lights will still work. The disadvantage is that, if you want to make sure the charger isn't consuming _any_ power when it doesn't need to, you need to turn it off at the outlet (not using the switch on the light bar itself).

I think this is most probably a Zigbee switch rather than a WiFi switch. WiFi requires a lot more power so would almost certainly need a battery. Zigbee uses low power radio and so can be powered from the kinetic energy of the switch itself. Alot of Zigbee systems like Philips Hue & the Ikea range (I forget the Swedish name) use a small hub box which effectively translates between WiFi and Zigbee radio, giving you best of both worlds.

That’s spooky…a couple of weeks ago I installed very similar lights but under the LAP brand from Screwfix. Currently the two short cabinets lights are into the plug socket, but the long unit is likewise wired into a fused spur. What I will be now adding though is the remote light switch as that is within my electrical capabilities. We did try motion triggered, rechargeable under cabinet devices, but throughout the night the dogs and cats kept setting them off so went flat after a few days. Would have been fine without pets 😊

I think you definitely need a battery in the switch. It's a 433MHz wireless switch. This can't work without a power source, hence there must be a battery in the switch. Just like in the remote control of garage doors etc. It looks like a nice and handy system though. Especially the fact that one can combine one or more switches to one receiver and vise versa. Thanks for the info.
@PetertronicАй бұрын
No, they really don't have a battery. The switch turns the pressure from you pushing it into a tiny electric current that is sufficient for it to transmit a short pulse of RF. Big Clive showed how these work a few years ago.
@oompjeАй бұрын
@@Petertronic OK, thanks for the update. So my guess is it's probably something with a piezzo crystal that gives a little current when pressed upon or a little spool with a magnet (acts like a dynamo). I'll check out Big Clive's video for the details.

Hi Stu, top job, as always! Theres is different version of kinetic switches available. Tlc sells them under the Quinetic brand. 99%, it is the same internally, but they have MK compatible switch modules. So in your set up you could've converted that existing 1 gang switch to a 2 gang with one wired and one quinetic, which would make it look even neater. Not sure how it stands with regs though, bit given that module has no battery to ever replace, it should be fine.

Actually, this is a minor frustration I have with quinetic switches - they don't turn specifically on or off, they toggle between states - so if you have two lights controlled by the same switch, and one of them is off, one is on, they will switch to being on and off respectively. Obviously the way to avoid this is to ensure you don't program the lights in that way. But it would still be nice if there were an option to say "switch it all off".
