From 2:03 to the end is one of my favourite parts of not just The Simpsons, but television history. This was such a fun episode, but the end just amazes me every time I watch it. Those beautiful drawings of the sunset, skyscrapers, the bridge, other vehicles; the shot of homer getting hit by waste, the directing of the panoramic shot and then the dolly shot; the sound effects of the wind, of Homer getting hit, and finally the musical score and NY NY by Sinatra is just the icing on the cake. Perfect elements put together to make a masterpiece. I'm not from the U.S. and I've never visited New York, but classic moments like this are so incredibly well done that they make you feel that you've _been_ to New York. People say the Golden Age ended during Season 9, but this episode, and this scene, is them at their peak.

@alvexok55232 жыл бұрын
I agree. The classic Simpsons were great. I remember when this episode first came out in around 1999, I hadn't expected The Simpsons to go to New York. Before then, I thought that Capitol City was the New York City of the Simpsons world, complete with the Capitol City song referencing "New York, New York" (ep when the Simpsons went there in the early series episode when Homer became a baseball mascot). Now we have the actual New York and song "New York, New York". Also, it's often in question which side of the US Springfield is in. Somewhere near the West Coast seems more plausible considering the mountainous terrain and desert land (such as the Badlands) outside of or not far from Springfield. But then in the camping trip episode when Ned, Homer, and Bart and Ned's kids float out to sea, they float to an oil rig, which is shown on the map to be off the East Coast (with the Krusty burger on that rig with Krusty and the squeaky voiced teen there, both Springfield residents)(well, I can see Krusty flying across country to visit that Krusty burger, but not the squeaky voice teen doing so to work at that Krusty burger). So, it therefore remains a real mystery which side of the US Springfield is in

I'm never a fan of episodes where a singular character gets tortured for no good reason, but Dan's delivery of "C'mon, let's go, everyone into the car now!" is the best frustrated father acting I've ever heard. He's clearly on the brink of absolutely exploding, but trying to stay cool enough to get asses in seats without being mean. I know it's one tiny line, but just the way he says it echoes a lot of lousy trips I think we've all had at least once.
@hectorblacknight64853 жыл бұрын
I agree, great delivery. It makes sense, if you think of it from Homer's point of view. He's had an utterly rage-filled day full of crap happening to him. He's not mad AT his family, but more 'I've had a really bad day, it isn't your fault, but we are leaving NOW.' Props to him for being that determined to get the hell out of New York, the sheer will Homer gets when he gets that angry always makes me laugh.
@alvexok5523 Жыл бұрын
Dan/Homer had definitely had his fill of NYC for the day, especially after dealing with alot of jerkasses. But there was one situation where he made it even worse for himself by failing to do one thing he could've easily done if he used his brain: We realize that Homer needed to borrow the drill to get the clamp off of his car, but why th did Homer stop his car in the one spot which blocked all thru traffic when he could've moved forward and to the left in front of the construction site so that one lane spot that he did stop at would've then been open for the backed-up traffic?? The clamp on his car already got him a couple of blocks so he could've at that point at least moved forward and to the left 15 more meters where he still could've borrowed the drill just the same, and then at least he wouldn't have blocked the way of a ton of angered NY drivers. Why th couldn't he have thought to do something so simple, something that would've made no difference in how it would've solved his problem, yet would've made a major difference with the rest of the people in that traffic??

The windscreen would still be in place in reality, albeit cracked to fuck. The reason being because the rest of the windows are made from one layer of tempered glass, whereas the windscreen is a type of safety glass which consists of two layers of glass with a layer of acrylic between. This is so that it doesn’t shatter into little pieces in an accident. This improves structural rigidity. Anyway, the hypodermic needles are the most dangerous of the items to hit Homer in the face. They can cause complications in the bloodstream, such as hepatitis and HIV. For this exact reason, they wouldn’t be in a bag like we see in the episode. They’re contained in a special box when discarded.
@andrewduong27403 жыл бұрын

That's bonkers. Literally after Principal and Pauper was Lisa's Sax, which is also a classic, and after that was a Treehouse of Horror, which was good. Funny with this episode, it had all the classic Simpson quirps, gags, funny lines, conflicts, secondary story and a tie in together for the nice conclusion, but the following episode of Season 9 "The Principal and the Pauper" is wildly considered the offical beginning of the end of the Series. Ill say i never considered it a bad episide at all. It actually has 1 of my all time favorite lines from the entire series ( "Up yours children" ) but i see why it now gets panned. It took a well liked character in Principal Skinner, and threw away his entire character in a single episode. Then made it to "well, I know this episode didn’t make any sense, but pretend like it never happened" I know diehard fans of the show thst still call him "Arman" instead of Seymour. After that, there was no scructure. Didn’t help maters that the fact Sam Simon also left the show at the same time and Matt Groening was checked out as well and was working on Futurerama But the NY episode is an episode that gets forgotten in the "Golden Age" Simpsons catalog. It shows the positives and negatives of the U.S's most recognized City. Homer through the latter, whole the rest of the family getting to enjoy the former. Its legitimately a very good episode. And i think deserve more praise in the "golden age" lore of the show

I gotta say, homer's car has to be one of the best cars ever made to still be drivable after all the abuse he put it through in this episode. No wonder he was so desperate to get it back. With a modern car, you so much as hit a speed bump and that car will require half it's components replaced before it ever moves again.

That's a pretty far drive. From NYC to Springfield.

Impressive that the sheer force from trying to drive with the boot on broke his header seals lmao, that car truly is a junkerolla

Tribute to Frank Sinatra at the end of this episode.

I don't think that was Frank. There was an extra voice credit; he probably sang it. Cheaper that way. Although, it wasn't included on any of the compilation CDs, so who knows.
