Al Jean, showrunner for _The Simpsons,_ said in this episode’s audio commentary that this segment caused some disagreement among the censors as to whether or not these lyrics could be sung on TV. The producers got the tape of Issac Hayes singing the song on the Academy Awards to prove that it could be sung on TV.

I remember there was some school function one night and a tv was brought in to keep us kiddies entertained while the parents and teachers had their meeting. Of course, we all wanted to watch The Simpsons, and it happened to be this episode. A teacher overheard this scene and went "Do your parents really let you watch this?"
