I don't know how mainstream they'd end up being, but many bands are huge. Lynyrd Skynyrd had a guitar army at one point, with three guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, 3 female vocalists, a keyboardist, and Ronnie VanZant as male vocalist, and they were HUGE. Manheim Steamroller has 9 members, the Trans-Siberian has a shitton, etc. Linkin Park has 6 members, Eluveitie has 8, Slipknot has 8-9, Arcade Fire has 9, Folkearth has over thirty members, etc. Many popular bands have been extremely large.

Amanda Chandler They split the 16 groups into group A and B so they can fit them all in the episodes. Group A performs in episode 1 and 3, Group B performs in episodes 2 and 4. Then they merge for the rest of the season because they have less groups.

The biggest problem I see, is that many of them relied on having 8+ members to get their sound, which isn't much of a band. 5 people is about the max I'd say to make up a band, how was the group of like 10 choir boys suppose to be a real, main stream band?
