What is the secret behind the Singapore economic model? If non-Western economies around the world are gaining more and more weight, what economic model could they possibly impose on us in the future? VPRO Backlight is getting enlightened and highlighted in Singapore, which is, according to some, the most successful economic model in the world.
VPRO Backlight makes an exploration based on a number of encounters with political and business leaders.
Singapore, the city-state in South East Asia, was not much more than a swamp 40 years ago. It had no raw materials, no hinterland and a low-skilled workforce. It is now one of the most successful economies in Asia with a state fund (Temasek) that owns billions and a per capita income that is higher than in the Netherlands: about $ 48,000 against about $ 37,000. The economic model is such a formula for success that even the Chinese leader Deng Xiao-Ping visited Singapore in 1978 to learn from this model, with all its consequences.
What is the secret behind the Singapore economic model? VPRO Backlight makes an exploration based on a number of encounters with political and business leaders, including the founder of modern Singapore, former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew (prime minister between 1959 and 1990), political scientist and Asia expert Kishore Mahbubani (from the Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy), Singapore-based American super-investor Jim Rogers and former CEO of AkzoNobel Kees van Lede.
How do they explain the success of the Singapore model and will this model point the way to Asia and ultimately to the rest of the world towards a future-proof economy?

China learnt from the Singapore model and had the fastest growing economy in history for 4 decades. Developing countries in the world would do well from learning from the Singaporean development model.

"True prosperity is shared prosperity.... because only then is it sustainable." - Lydia Lim article from the Straits Times This is not socialism or communism in disguise. People have to think long term when it comes to economics. We have to look at the social, political, environmental, moral, spiritual implications of our collective day to day interactions with our fellow citizens.

How do you sustain that this phrase does not hide socialism? what she says, she says it in a beautiful way but does not explain what she means by "shared prosperity"

I am speechless of admiration for LKY. At that age, he could be retired saying "I am not charge, now its your turn..." No, he makes his voice heard. He truly care for his people! He is a lion!

This documentary does a great job in drawing the main distinctions between the western and eastern minds. The west really has pretty much become that rapper from the '90s who's run out of stories and creativity and now just cruising somewhere trying best to enjoy that old beat-up Mercedes. The east, however, is creating, innovating, pushing, working, and showing the world and itself how a harmony of individualism (capitalism) and community (socialism) can build lasting and meaningful change. Witness the world shift to Asia, my friends.

Some of the pictures are a bit outdated, as the documentary was shot almost ten years ago. But it gives a very good explanation of the path Singapore chose to develop itself.

Well the proverbs say "too many cooks spoiled the soup" that is democracy!!!...yup I admit S'pore Gov't is autocratic but the PAP party administration has over 5 decades has brought us fro $350 per capita GNP to over 59,797 in 2020 from 3rd world to 1st world & in my humble opinion if the S'pore govt took an examination they would have scored a distinction 75/100 marks.

How are Malaysian Chinese different from Singaporean Chinese. Polite my arse basically they marginalised the native. Most chinese there are Malaysians anyway including Lee Kuan Yew/Goh Chock Tong. They are so racist against mainland Indians and you arent ashamed? We call them 'Kiasu' go find out. Your comment is and obvious lie and you are not Singaporean or Malaysian to judge us.
