Honestly, TV has never been a problem for me. It’s social media including KZbin. I spend so much time on KZbin than anywhere else 😩 It’s like you go into one rabbit hole after another and the next thing you know, you just wasted 4 hours of your life.

I'm in the UK. I never watch mainstream news or soaps and junk TV but I do really enjoy watching gardening, history and nature programmes. In the spring and summer I'm usually outside actively working in the garden or going on walks. I find KZbin to be addictive and have to be disciplined in how much I watch 😙

When I was in my 40s and living alone, I rarely watched TV, and was thriving! Now 69, recently widowed, after watching this, and summer at my doorstep, I'm inspired to try it again! I have a very large collection of dvds and will allow a good, favorite movie, now and then, or get a dvd from the library. I think I'll cancel cable and Netflix. I'M SICK OF NEWS! So that will save a ton of money! Thanks again Joshua, you are always enriching my life. I just purchased a handwriting book and practice paper. I am determined to improve my penmanship. Also, after dinner, I adore gardening or walking in the neighborhood with my dog and chatting up the neighbors, who also made the decision to not turn on the TV. I'm excited, feels like New Years Day! A fresh healthy start, to my new chapter, after losing my dear husband!

@@JustMe-ig7sx thank you for your kind words. When I first started being a mom I was so afraid to do it wrong and was going to try to “read all the books,” on it. I had to remember that my first priority was to ask the Lord for daily wisdom to guide me moment by moment, and with each child individually as they are wired. And to remember to shepherd their hearts. Behavior can be modified but the big picture is the heart and shepherding it intentionally. And reading them the Bible, taking with them often and alway about the Lord and pray with them without ceasing. God partners with us!! Even and especially as a single parent for you. Love and logic has some great practical natural consequence ideas for discipline and sensible character, too. Have you seen the movie “like arrows,” ? It’s great!!! Check it out! Saying we don't watch TV is no big deal. Instead of turning on the TV and sitting around watching it, we sit in front of our computers all day watching KZbin or chatting on Facebook. No difference as I see it. I was married in April 1967. I remember precisely when my husband and I purchased our first TV. It was a 13" B&W that we purchased from Sears Roebuck on the morning of July 20, 1969. We wanted to watch the first man Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. It was the only TV we owned for 10 years. After being a widow for 14 years I seldom watch TV but turn it on just to hear people talking. My mother was a widow for 26 years and she did the same with the radio.

@@markrunyon5524Good question. And what about Netflix?
@SomethingCompass
@SomethingCompass 28 күн бұрын
@@markrunyon5524 I have been thinking about that today, so thanks for asking. TV is passive, with mostly useless filler. This including about 40% commercials, which are at best a useless waste of time, and more often harmful. I intensely dislike watching any TV when I am visiting friends, and they all seem to have TV on all day. I use videos like I use audio books, and that is for searching for specific information. The video format is exceptional at a "Show me how to do something" as opposed to "tell me how", otherwise I could just read the information that I want. I never listen to or watch anything passively, which is what TV is. But after thinking about this today, I think that I will spend less time on KZbin, and more time with audio books or audio courses. But for finding out how to do some task quickly, youtube is excellent. - I don't do social media at all (Twitter, X, Facebook, etc), another waste of time. - This channel has been good for me, it has helped me with my goal of getting rid of everything that is unnecessary in my life, especially junk and clutter. So I think that I will stay subscribed to this channel for now. But you have an excellent point, How much of the time I spend on KZbin is unproductive? How much time is excessive? What is a good time limit? - What do you think? Is this something that you have been thinking about?

I got rid of my TV's approx 5 years ago. I was a 60 yo f at that time. I always wanted to be a mason. I spent my time redoing my land and mountain home with some badly needed pavers made and laid in place. It was a killer task at the time. I was hand moving boulders, hand mixing portland cement for the pavers & I was facing natural rock. No one told me that using a masonry hammer would bruise the palm of my delicate hand to a lovely shade of purple. It was all worth not watching the TV. I do spend time in the morning learning things from YT. The mason who taught me my skills was on YT and just happened to live the next county over from me. A great man with the gift of sharing his decades of experience. I was lucky to have found him. TV is fine for some, just not me. I really like your philosophies and advice. There we watch all kinds of things from news to movies. But as we do not have regular tv channels we have to choose what to watch. No swapping around the channels! So most nights after news & weather we turn it off. I think the best way to avoid doing anything you don’t want to is to make it harder to start doing!

So true...and although I do not enjoy watching tv and rarely do, what I don't understand is how things that we did 'in the old days' such as read books, play jigsaw or crossword puzzles, etc. were any better for you? The end result is the same: sitting on a couch or chair for hours on end, getting some form of mental pleasure from it. Now, I spend hours watching videos. I find many of them extremely educational and I learn a lot (much faster than reading a book on the same subject). Some are just for entertainment, true - but I tend to prefer to gain some insight in watching a video as opposed to just 'spending time'. But either way, I think it is human nature to need time to unwind - rather than always being a participant, it feels good to be a spectator, too.

I don't watch tv except 1/2 hour a day if that. Screen time is another story. Current problems with Screenagers fit what you describe. Less screen time, less dawdling, more living in reality... that's for now, eh?

I thought you were gonna say “no TV.” Lol. I’m down with less TV tho. As a single person living alone tho, if used judiciously, it’s pretty good company if you manage it well and limit it and being more selective about what you’ll “agree” to watch. Visited my son recently for example. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie Logan together. (Yes that’s how far behind I am with movies lol). I stayed a whole week and that was the only “TV time” lol so I think that’s pretty well balanced. I only have a few on my list that I actually want to see. One series and one movie. The rest I don’t want or need. No news for me. No useless fluff (like reality tv or sitcoms etc). I don’t think of TV as anything but deliberate “down time.” And down time is only when the rest of my life is under control and taken care of well enough (not to be abused as a procrastination tool or to try to avoid responsibility etc). Oh right. And mute any and all commercials and at times do micro tasks during that time. (Although I don’t have cable. Just internet apps).

I got rid of my TV in 2015. 99% of what's on is garbage, IMO. Never missed it.

I haven't had a TV for over 15 years, I do however have access to netflix, prime and Disney from which I choose something to watch in the evenings whilst I'm seeing or knitting, but these things are not my enemy, right now that goes to Instagram. I'm doing a photography course and the group has Instagram to share photos, that's how it started, but it's to get lost on there.But

I have 2 TVs on the wall and they were both given to me. Never use them. I am not obese. But I do eat poorly and when I wake up I regret the cleaning or time spent on yoga I didnt get to do instead.

TVs in the bedroom really bother me. If you own a tv you really only need one and I’d suggest it in the living room. If you have kids and don’t want to watch what they do then 2 tvs might make sense but I’d suggest having these in a designated space outside of a bedroom (ex. Kids tv in the basement or bonus room and adults in the living room)

We respectfully disagree. I think you could find great non commercial show. We LOVE the History Channel. NO COMMERCIALS "Foods that Built America" was AMAZING!!! Now we are watching " The Mega Brands That Built America." We watch it together and discuss. last night, we watched ow Spaulding and Wilson created the first sports equipment. And then a Whole industry. Now I understand why my dad switched to PBS when I was a teen.
