Regarding years later re-reviews. I enjoyed them. I think KZbin is saturated with first impression videos and I appreciate years later reviews. That said, I'll admit that I didn't watch the recent Pilot reviews the day they came out. Mostly because I have the pen or am not interested in buying--I did watch them all later though. The series might not do well now, but I think it will add value to the community and will be good videos for people researching fountain pens later on.

I agree...while "first impression/unboxing" vids feed the instant gratification part of our brains, I place a lot more weight on a "years later re-review". I like the way you phrased it...that while the series might not do well now (or overall), I think it's a very valuable series to have on KZbin. For what it's worth, I vote to keep doing the vids. :D

I used the Custom 912, and I modified it the same way you have through the NibSmith! Functionally, you're right, it's not the same pen without the fancy feed, and it is fun... but I found out that it isn't exactly for me! 🤣😭 Turns out that I'm a stickler for regular writing, and soft nibs quiver more than I like. I want nice square lines, the way a standard Pilot , Sailor /, or Esterbrook Needlepoint will get me. Who knew I was such a stick in the mud!

I've been wanting a pilot with the falcon nib, but I wasn't sure on what pen. I've also looked at the Magna Carta. Love the new resins available on it. The Magna Carta has some spotty reviews and is pricy. I am not a great flex writer because it just doesn't come naturally. I have a Pineider quill nib that is bouncy with some variation without thinking about it. Also have a vintage Montblank on the way that is supposed to flex, so will see. Will watch for more info on the Magna Carta. Always appreciate your reviews. They always show me things that I'm looking for in a pen. One thing that would be helpful is putting links in the description for sources of the ebonite feed you purchased or some of the less known inks you use. Not the common brand like diamines etc, but the less available ones. Also love Diamine Writers Blood. One of the first inks I ordered when I started back using fountain pens. It is always inked in my Pilot E95s, it compliments the champagne burgandy version so well. Good to see the Parker surprise.

This is really interesting. You’ve found a way to utilize the flex capabilities of your nib - as a marker of your emotional state - that I have never heard anybody else use before. Your example encourages others to find their own unique ways of using different nibs. I also have to say, I have never seen Writer’s Blood looking so blue!

The top pen for me is either a Pilot 743 with the SF nib or the Sailor King of Pen. Both are glorious.
@b.j.94392 ай бұрын
My top two are my Pilot 823 (stock), and my Pilot 912 (also 3 channel ebonite feed). I don’t know if I could pick a favorite between the two because I use them for different writing desires. Writers Blood tends to be too wet for my 912, or at least the bottle I have. I really enjoy using Noodlers Southwest Sunset (previously Apache Sunset) in the fall in my 912. I consider my 912 my personality pen -same as you, and my 823 as my writing workhorse. My #2 choice is my Benu Earl Grey - a steel nib that in my opinion is a peer to my 823. I do wish Benu made more toned down styles - I’m not a huge fan of over the top bling in a pen. I will say that Mag 600 is gorgeous and right up my alley. I just wish they weren’t so pricey but I understand the price point. They have chosen well - with their materials. Now I am stuck choosing between a Mag 600 and a Pilot 845 as my next awaited pen purchase. Seems as the choice between a flex and steady writer will always remain.

If I had a single greatest pen, I wouldn’t need a collection of them for different reasons and purposes! I do have the 912 FA and it is inked, and I like it, and it is in my every-few-days use rotation.

I put my 912 FA nib into a jowo collar and into an eyedropper pen. It's pretty sweet. I find the magna carta to be so soft that it isn't practical for every day writing. I will say, I think I have the old magna carta nib and yours is likely the improved version. My dream flex nib is an EF x-wing harpoon customized by Les at Stylosuite. It is THE ABSOLUTE BOMB!!

I have the "kissing cousin" of your 912, which is the Custom 742 with a falcon nib. I have it in its original plastic feed. It is the pen wherein I need apply only the lightest pressure. As such, I use it for longer writing periods. The pen does suffer from occasional ink starvation, but I am very patient, so I just give light taps on paper, and when I see a small dot, I know it will write again. I relate to what you said about mood changing your handwriting. I have been told I have nice handwriting, but when I am stressed, rushed, or bored, my writing turns to crap. People still think it looks good, but I know an ugly scrawl when I see one. More power to Pens and Tea, and keep those videos coming!
@ILoveFountainPensCdn2 ай бұрын
Do you find that the ink starvation happens with all brands or just certain ones? Thanks!
@geomancer63712 ай бұрын
@@ILoveFountainPensCdn It happens for pretty much all the brands..i journal on A5 notebooks, and the ink starvation happens about twice for each page. It also happens less with bookpaper because it is more absorbent, but because it's a very wet pen, it will exhibit show-through.
@JRDiaz-tn5kb2 ай бұрын
I think you should keep both inked up. There's always room for another, regardless of who's better. Plus, we can see that comparison more often, maybe with different colored inks?

My budget hasn’t allowed the 912 much less the Magna Carta, but oh boy that Magna Carta is really shaking up the FP community! What a fantastic nib/pen!

Agreed, the 912 is a great pen - nice size, understated and takes the CON-70 converter. I’m left-handed and have a Waverly nib. I’ve been watching and enjoying the series, but skipped the one one the Metropolitan because I loathe that pen - lol. Keep up the good work!

I like the re-reviews. Keep them coming! If the volume of views is down, it’s likely due to folks dealing with back-to-school issues, last minute end-of-summer trips before September is in full swing, etc. I have a Pilot 912, but not a Falcon nib. I think I’ll give it a try. Thanks! I think after living with the Magna Carta 600 for a while, you’ll stick with the Pilot 912.

I keep bouncing back and forth between a 912/FA with the Ebonite feed and the Magna Carta 600 or 650 to dip my toes into the world of flex nibs. I've gotten close to pressing the "buy" button a couple of times but think I should really try them out in person before dropping the not-insignificant investment in buying one. Maybe I should head down to Atlas Stationers one of these days... I know in one of your 912 videos you mentioned tsuki-yo being one of your favorite inks for that pen. Is it still on your list as a potential favorite for a flex nib or has that changed? Any chance we could get a "single GREATEST fountain pen ink of all time!" video to match this one?
@adamzappia22132 ай бұрын
Nice choices. I have not ended both of these in the past. While they haven’t stayed in my small collection I’ve at least considered getting another KOP and I do still own a 743 in EF for drawing and a bit of EF writing now and then. I prefer slightly stiffer nibs though, but still with a touch of softness nut more of a springy feel. My Custom Urushis (both FM, but I did have a M as well a while back) are equal favourites with a Namiki Urushi 20 with a fine nib. I did also have a Custom 845 in fine which is a much stiffer nib but still a spectacular writer, but I sold that and plan on getting another Urushi 20 at some point if and when I can afford to do so. I was also lucky enough to try a Namiki Urushi 50 at last year’s Pelikan Hub, but it was a broad nib which isn’t really my thing, but I’d like to try one in FM (or a F as I think F is/was available in the Japanese market).

This video’s coming at the perfect time! I absolutely looove flex and how it makes my writing more expressive, especially when I journal, which (to me) means writing very quickly, so I need my pen to keep up. I haven’t tried either of these pens as they aren’t available locally and I feel that before I invest in my next pen, I really want to try it out in person first. Lately, Goldspot’s been highlighting a few of their flex pens on instagram, including the teal Pilot Custom 743 with an FA nib, the Leonardo Momento Zero with an elastic fine nib and a Magna Carta MAG 650 with a flex nib. Based on their writing samples, I think the latter is my favourite. When the 912 had the plastic feed, did the nib still flex the same amount that it does now with the ebonite feed? Was it scratchy, skipping and having hard starts (or something else?) prior to switching out the feed? Thanks! 😊

I LOVE THIS PEN!!!!! I have three: FA, PO, and EF nibs. I use the PO and EF pens every day. If I could only keep one pen it would probably be the Custom 912 EF nib. Other close contenders: Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, Gravitas Vac Ultemate, Conway Stewart Churchill Heritage. All are incredibly smooth writers.

I suspect the Magna Carta would still have the edge but I’d be curious to see it compared to the 743 with the Falcon nib because the larger size of the 743 nib might bring it closer in performance to the Magna Carta. I have a 912 with a SF nib which lets me get some flex without changing the feed. It’s a very nice pen. Great flat top design but larger than the Sailor Pro Gear so I can still use it unposted. The SF nib is nice and responsive without being full flex. I think the 912 is underrated and I’d recommend it over the 742.

It is summer, so that could be one reason that you aren't getting the views. I think that this is a great idea. I look for these types of reviews when I'm buying something. Since these are classic and collectable pens people will possibly look at these reviews even years from now. They may pay off in the long run. A review of a Jinhao probably wont be interesting to many people 2 years or more later. I have watched reviews of Pilots that are years old many times. So happy to see that Parker is better. I just got new windows, had the roof done and a couple other things. They finished a month ago. My cat just came out from under the couch a couple of days ago. He sneaked out to eat and use the litterbox sp I knew that he was OK and hadn't got outside. I was still pretty worried about him. Next time he will have to go to a kennel.

I find that I have to point out, my 742 & 912 writes flawlessly with a ton of line variation without any mod but youre limited to Pilot Iroshizuku Konpeki. Both pes are about 4years old and never rail road.
@galessi12262 ай бұрын
The reason she changed the feed was to keep the ink flowing well with normal speed writing....with the Stock feed you will run into " railroading" ....when trying to write at a normal or semi fast speed.

I don't have the FA nib, but my medium 912 is my best writing pen. My goal is to one day get some Urushi work done on it, so the body can match the fantastic writing experience. BTW, the price difference is not as much as you may be thinking. I got my 912 for $189 years ago, but today they are going for $280 in the US, vs the $350 for the Mag 600
