While I didn't know Austin myself, I ran in the same circles as him and had many mutual friends. Let me tell you, NONE of them were very surprised. This was in my home town. We were all devastated for the loss of Jessica and, as high schoolers ourselves, absolutely disgusted to learn who killed her. It was all we talked about in the halls. We expected some middle age man to be caught as her killer. I was in art class when another student interrupted peer critique "JESSICA RIDGEWAY'S KILLER HAD BEEN CAUGHT!" He read the short statement off his phone and when he said "Austin Sig" my heart dropped. He was one of us. The monster was one of us. This will forever be a core memory for me. Before we knew it was a high schooler that killed her, we used to go out after school to watch the elementary school kids walk home, to keep them safe. After Austin was caught, the parents immediately rejected us. Some acted like it was our fault. This case is close to my heart. It still hurts.
@dawfydd2 жыл бұрын
Its true though bullying is at the center of many of these incidents and the adults will place blame onto highschoolers for it but where is the solution to fix it? when will teachers get a decent wage to help children grow, the parents don't want to have to pay more for public school so they are as much to blame for the wackos created by this bad system, they just need somebody else to blame.
@michellementh96512 жыл бұрын
@@dawfydd What? Are you seriously blaming her mother right now because she didn't take her to school herself? Being a helicopter parent makes kids grow up to be neurotic adults, fearful of everyone. While we should remain vigilant, we should also be able to feel safe in our own neighborhoods. People get abducted within blocks of their homes rather than a mile. It happens all too often and lots of parents can't feasibly take their children to and from school every single day. She was taught to be vigilant, to scream if someone approached her. She may have thought initially that Austin was there to walk with her. Like the OP here said, they watched the younger kids walk to school often to make sure they were safe.
@michellementh96512 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry you and your friends were blamed and ostracized to an extent because of this psychopath. You and your friends did what you could. I live in this community and was in high school when this occurred. The murderer was friends with my older brother back when they were in middle school. This case destroyed our community, but brought us together in a whole different way. I remember exactly where I was when I found out who did it. I was a junior. We weren’t supposed to be on our phones, but we were. We all started seeing the news articles. A girl got up and told our teacher, and she proceeded to write Austin’s name on the board. We were released from school that day and school was cancelled the next. They brought in counselors for us to talk to. My family and countless others met at the local rec center to start the search. They loaded us on school buses to various areas near where she went missing. Daylight to daybreak. Thank you for covering this case. We miss Jessica more than anything. She was a bright, beautiful, and funny child. I still think about the morbidity of this case. I still see purple ribbons hanging around the neighborhood. He dropped out of school because he was so extensively bullied for being weird. And now a bunch of his classmates (at least some said they went to lower grades with him before they went to college) are saying how nice and caring he was and how he was friends with everyone. Something's not tracking here. Like they didn't want to admit they were bullies or that he was always the weird kid no one liked. I always feel like the people they interview after who had no idea are lying though. They don't want to admit they always knew that guy was a creep and did nothing about it (even though there's likely nothing that could have been done just for thinking the guy's a creep anyway). They don't want to admit to the world they feel some responsibility for knowing something was wrong, for being bullies, for avoiding the person, whatever they did and doing nothing.

I remember my mom sobbing into my dad’s chest, begging God to find who killed Jessica. Well, they found him. Everyone celebrated - some teachers even dancing on tables in their enthusiasm. I don’t know when police departments started allowing these dispatchers to question a suspect or the party reporting to this degree. They’re supposed to get details of what’s going on at that moment to relay to police. Dispatchers are not detectives, and they’re certainly not trained to question suspects. I live in colorado, the city over from Westminster, and I’ve always remembered this case. I was 12 and in 7th grade, and we had teachers and councilors speaking too us (especially after she was found) because so many were worried about becoming a victim of such a crime. Ill never forget having full classes dedicated too helping us as children feel safe again after this happened, especially since so many of us were so close in age too her. It was crazy because it’s relatively safe around here so a child being kidnapped the way she was made a lot of us feel like it wasn’t as safe as so many of us had thought.

it is so like our country to try to tell kids they are safe, but no one who's in positions of authority who have the ability to actually change laws to keep monsters locked up far longer, or increase any of the budgets of Police Departments so that they have the necessary tools and man power to catch more killers and rapists....but no, just go in the schools and tell the children that they are safe.... when they knew darn well that no one is 100% safe in this country or this world. Cause there are just too many murderous nuts in the world.

@@Jesus_isLord_andGod are you trolling? This is why people are slowly but surely moving away from mainstream Christianity.. where, in the OP’s comment, did you see a request for a fucking sermon, let alone a SAVIOR* (not saver, as you so idiotically put). God is most certainly real. I believe Jesus was too, but God’s not some old, bearded white dude sitting up there on a cloud just smiting people to hell. That’s ridiculous and Hell isn’t real. There is the afterlife (heaven I guess) and then there is the abyss (your spirit stuck blind in the darkness). Biblical sin is more akin to Laws of Man rather than the Law of the Universe or Natural Law.. a list of sins from God is hilariously ludicrous and so transparently the construct of men who wanted to control the population (mostly women) back when the Bible was written. I’m surprised no one saw her being abducted. At 8.30am people are out getting to work or school. Or that no one’s doorbell camera or similar picked it up. So, so awful and completely unforeseeable. People didn't have doorbell cameras and home CCTV wasn't common in 2012. I think it's almost a "base rule" of lawyers to tell their client not to plead non-guilty even if it's obvious the person did it. The guy even reported himself, gave all the information they wanted, etc., it'd make no sense if he had decided by himself to suddenly back out on that. So it was probably someone else's idea, and in those cases it's usually the lawyer's. You'd be surprised how disturbing lawyers who accept to defend a criminal could be. Some even try to shame or blame the victim(s).

I don't exactly think sleeping (in the most innocent way possible of course) with your parent is too odd, not like cuddling or kissing. Happening to be laying close to someone while sleeping isn't sexual, I hope my daughter feels close enough to me to still be affectionate and want to be around me as a teenager. In this case I do feel like maybe they had more going on, his sexual interests as well as the overtly-close relationship with his mom, usually killers who go on to sexually assault victims were molested as a child, kind of gives off vibes like his mom was grooming him his whole life.
